Bicyclist severely injured in collision with pickup truck in Santa Rosa

A bicyclist was severely hurt after getting hit by a pickup truck in Santa Rosa Monday morning, authorities said. The collision happened at about 8:10 a.m. near the intersection of Sebastopol Road and Laurel Grove Circle in the southwestern part of the city. The Santa Rosa Police Department said in a social media post that dispatchers received a 911 call about the crash. Officers and other first responders arrived to find a woman down and needing immediate medical attention. She was taken to a trauma center for injuries that were described as life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle that hit the bicyclist, a gold Ford pickup truck, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police said the driver did not display any symptoms of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and that speed did not appear to be a factor in the collision. Based on the driver's statements and those of a witness, police said the bicyclist entered a crosswalk at the intersection when she was struck, riding from the north side of Sebastopol Road to the south side. The pickup truck was headed west on Sebastopol Road at the time of the collision. The injured bicyclist is a 55-year-old Santa Rosa resident, while the driver of the pickup is a 59-year-old resident of Cloverdale. Westbound lanes of Sebastopol Road near the Laurel Grove Circle intersection were closed for several hours during the investigation. Anyone with information about the collision was encouraged to contact Officer J. Meteyer at jmeteyer@

Sonoma County deputies arrest 8 teens in burglary, vandalism of Forestville home

An astute neighbor alerted police to a possible home break-in early Saturday morning in Sonoma County, leading to the arrest of eight juveniles, the Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. At about 3:22 a.m., deputies responded to the 8200 block of Trenton Road in Forestville on a report of a burglary. A neighbor who knew the homeowners were away saw a person entering the garage and turning off the lights. Deputies discovered a damaged padlock on the garage door. Inside, they found a Toyota truck reported stolen to the Santa Rosa Police Department on Thursday. Deputies surrounded the residence and called for its occupants to exit. Eight juveniles, aged 14 to 16, were detained at the scene. The recently remodeled home sustained significant vandalism, including spray-painted walls, damaged sheetrock, and holes in the subfloor. All juveniles were booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of felony vandalism, burglary, and related offenses.

Santa Rosa man, his 3 children seriously injured in crash

Santa Rosa Police on Tuesday said they are investigating after a crash that seriously injured a man and his three children on Monday. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near West 3rd Street and Arboleda Drive, and it involved a red 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan and a white 2019 Ford Ranger that is owned by the city of Santa Rosa. According to police, the minivan driver was initially going eastbound on West 3rd Street in the left lane when he moved to the right lane to pass two vehicles. Around the same time, a Ford Ranger in the right lane began to merge to the left because the roadway narrows into one lane. As it merged, police said the minivan driver tried to pass the Ford Ranger and hit the rear left side of the truck with the front right side of the minivan. The minivan then struck two trees that were in the median. Police said the minivan driver was a 44-year-old Santa Rosa man and that his three boys were occupants in the vehicle. The man, his 12-year-old, 11-year-old and 5-year-old were all seriously injured. Police said they believe the 5-year-old was in the front passenger seat in a booster seat; the 11-year-old was in the second row behind the driver; and the 12-year-old was in the third row behind his brother. Police said the man remains at a local hospital in critical condition, and the boys are at a Bay Area hospital with serious injuries. Investigators said the city employee was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, and that he did not require medical treatment. Police said, "due to the medical condition of the minivan driver, additional investigation is required to determine if he was impaired." The crash remains under investigation.

Suspect in series of Santa Rosa arsons arrested

Santa Rosa detectives arrested a man police describe as a transient who is accused of triggering multiple fires in the city from late March to May, according to police. Heriberto Soliz-Olivarez, 29, was arrested around 11 a.m. Tuesday at Finley Community Park along West College Avenue, the Santa Rosa Police Department said in a statement. He is accused of setting fires to multiple inhabited structures, garage doors and residential fences between March 24 and Tuesday. Police said that on March 24, officers learned about a reported arson at a residence in the 1100 block of Exeter Drive. A fence attached to the residence was set on fire during the overnight hours while the residents were asleep. On April 30, around 9:25 p.m., someone used lighter fluid to burn the corner of the same residence. The fire was quickly extinguished by a neighbor, but the exterior of the home already had significant damage. Around 9:50 p.m. on April 21, an arson was reported at a residence in the 800 block of Warren Lane, where someone sprayed lighter fluid on the wooden fence attached to the residence and lit the fence on fire. At 8:41 p.m. last Friday, the wooden door of the detached garage of the same house on Warren Lane was set on fire, leaving a burn mark. On May 20, at approximately 3:50 a.m., the same garage door on Warren Lane was lit on fire. Security camera footage showed a person pouring what was believed to be lighter fluid onto the garage door before lighting the door on fire. Police said the person walked out of the camera frame and returned a few minutes later after the fire went out. He reportedly poured more liquid and set the door on fire a second time. According to investigators, the fire continued to burn until 4:13 a.m. when first responders arrived. Police said that upon reviewing one of the collected camera footage, one of their detectives recognized the suspect as Soliz-Olivarez from prior law enforcement contacts. Investigators also alleged that the suspect in the other arsons carried the same backpack as Soliz-Olivarez was in this video. During his arrest, Soliz-Olivarez reportedly wore the same clothing and backpack that were seen on security camera footage from the latest arson he allegedly perpetrated. Soliz-Olivarez was booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of felony arson of an inhabited structure or property. No one was reported injured in any of the fires he allegedly caused. According to police, the victims of the burned homes on Exeter Drive and Warren Lane do not have any connection to Soliz-Olivarez, so detectives are investigating Soliz-Olivarez's motive for targeting the victims' residences.

2 Bay Area teens accused of breaking into church, defecating on floor

Two teens were arrested Monday and face felony charges for allegedly breaking into and vandalizing a San Francisco Bay Area church, including defecating on a restroom floor. According to the Santa Rosa Police Department, a field evidence technician was called to the Santa Rosa Bible Church at 4575 Badger Road around 8:15 a.m. Sunday. Church employees told police that two teens entered the church through an unsecured door on Saturday, when no employees were present. Police said the teens threw items around and broke a toilet in a restroom, defecated on the bathroom floor and urinated on the floor of the gymnasium. The teens also damaged a children's play structure that was brand new. Footage from the church's surveillance cameras helped police quickly identify both suspects. Around 10 a.m. Monday, police arrested a 14-year-old Santa Rosa boy. A second suspect, a 15-year-old boy from Danville and the 14-year-old's cousin, was driven to Santa Rosa by a parent to surrender to authorities. Both teens were booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of felony burglary and felony vandalism. The teen's names were not released due to their ages. In a statement Monday, police offered a message to youth to respect other people's property. "Breaking into homes, schools, or businesses, or tagging and vandalizing buildings and property might seem like 'no big deal' in the moment — but it hurts real people and damages the community we all share," police said. "Be the kind of person who lifts up your community — not one who tears it down."
