US embassy warns Indian students: visa may be revoked if you skip, drop out of class
The statement follows an advisory from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 17 May, which reminded students on Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas that they must report their employment within 90 days of starting the programme. Failure to do so could result in the termination of their status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), ICE had warned. In a post on social platform X, the embassy said, 'If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues'. New Delhi: The US Embassy in India Tuesday issued an advisory to international students, warning them that dropping out or skipping classes without informing the school can result in the revocation of the student visa, or even make them ineligible for future US visas. It also said that violations of their visa, such as unauthorised leaves or inadequate academic attendance, could lead not only to deportation or loss of OPT eligibility, but could also adversely affect future applications for US visas, including H-1B, L-1, or even green cards. The 2024 Open Doors Report, which tracks international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the US, said that for the first time in 15 years, India surpassed China to become the leading source of international students to the country. More than 3.31 lakh Indian students (331,602) were currently studying in the US during the 2023–24 academic year—an all-time high. If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues. — U.S. Embassy India (@USAndIndia) May 27, 2025 This marked a 23 percent increase from the previous year, when 268,923 Indian students were enrolled in American institutions for the 2022–23 academic session. The latest advisory comes amid a crackdown on immigration by the Donald Trump administration, including invoking a wartime-era Act to deport thousands of immigrants. International students were warned by many of their schools to avoid unnecessary travel outside the US due to potential visa complications. Manipur: 10 suspected Kuki militants killed, ‘war-like' ammo stockpile seized in Assam Rifles op
'During the operation, the patrol party of 1 AR that is assisting with border fencing work came under sudden and unprovoked heavy fire from cadres. Demonstrating exceptional composure and combat readiness, the troops responded in a precise, measured and calibrated manner, resulting in the killing of ten individuals in camouflage fatigues,' a senior Assam Rifles officer said on condition of anonymity. The two-day-long operation started on 14 May after intelligence input regarding the movement of cadres along the border near New Samtal village in Khengjoy was received, according to sources in the security establishment. The area, sources said, is mountainous with scant human habitation and is over 130 km from Imphal. New Delhi: Ten militants suspected to be from the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) were killed during a major counterinsurgency operation by the Assam Rifles in Manipur's Chandel, close to the Indo-Myanmar border, near international border pillar Number 61, ThePrint learnt Friday. Following the encounter, a thorough combing operation was carried out in the area, and a significant cache of weapons, including seven AK-47 rifles, one RPG launcher, one M4 rifle and four single-barrel breech-loading (SBBL) rifles, ammunition and war-like stores, were recovered from the site, the officer confirmed. According to the officer, a preliminary assessment suggests that those killed in the operation were 'known for involvement in cross-border insurgent activity'. The identities of all 10 have yet to be ascertained but sources said they were likely from Lalim camp under commander CnC Douminlen. Further, they were likely from the much smaller rebel group United Tribal Volunteers and joined KNA-B at a later stage, a source said. 'Efforts are underway to confirm their identities. The operation has concluded and seizures have been made,' the officer said. The officer added that the situation along the Indo-Myanmar Border remains under 'heightened surveillance'. 'Security forces are maintaining a robust posture and are in coordination with civil administration and intelligence agencies to ensure peace and stability in the region,' the officer said. Chandel district is inhabited by tribals of different ethnic groups, primarily the Nagas. Manipur has a 398-km-long unfenced International Border with Myanmar. It was only last year that the Border Road Organisation (BRO) started work to fence the frontiers. Intel leads security forces to suspected terrorist hideout in J&K's Udhampur, 1 soldier killed
As the team approached, the armed terrorists opened fire. The operation, codenamed 'BirliGali,' was still underway. Sources in the defence and security establishment told thePrint that specific actionable intelligence led the joint forces of the Indian Army and J&K Police to zero in on a suspected terrorist hideout in the dense forest area of Basantgarh. New Delhi: Security forces were engaged Thursday in an exchange of fire with terrorists in the Dudu-Basantgarh area of Jammu & Kashmir's Udhampur district. At least one soldier, who was injured, later succumbed to his injuries. One soldier, identified as Hav Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA Special Forces, who was wounded in the initial exchange of fire, later succumbed to his injuries. In a post on X, the White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said, 'One of our #Bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite best medical efforts.' #GOC #WhiteKnightCorps and all ranks salute #Braveheart Hav Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA SF, who made the supreme #sacrifice during a counter #terror #operation. His indomitable courage and the valour of his team will never be forgotten. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved… — White Knight Corps (@Whiteknight_IA) April 24, 2025 The Udhampur encounter comes less than 48 hours after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 dead and only a day after security forces foiled an infiltration bid in Uri, killing two terrorists with suspected links to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Sources say the terrorists involved in the Dudu-Basantgarh encounter may also have links to Pakistan-backed outfits operating from across the Line of Control (LoC), although their exact affiliations remain to be officially confirmed. This is the latest in a spate of engagements across J&K as militant activity shows signs of resurgence along both the LoC and the hinterland. It comes amid a notable increase in intelligence alerts and troop deployments across sensitive areas, as counter-terror operations have been ramped up in response. Security forces foil infiltration bid at J&K's Uri, 2 terrorists with suspected links to LeT killed
Intercepted communications and analysis of their travel routes indicate clear coordination with handlers operating from across the border, the sources further said. Sources in the defence and security establishment told ThePrint the two terrorists are suspected to have direct links to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the same terror outfit believed to be behind Tuesday's attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. New Delhi: Security forces neutralised two terrorists during an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LOC), near Jammu and Kashmir's Uri Wednesday. The operation resulted in the seizure of a considerable cache of weapons, ammunition and other military supplies. The operation, code-named 'Tikka,' is currently underway in the Sarjeevan area of Uri Nala, located in the Baramulla district of Kashmir, it is learnt. Sources said that troops reported the detection of approximately 2-3 unidentified terrorists attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory. In a post on X, the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army said a heavy exchange of fire took place after the troops confronted the infiltrators shortly after dawn. It resulted in the 'elimination' of both militants. 'Large quantity of weapons, ammunition and other war-like stores have been recovered from the terrorists,' it further said. OP TIKKA, Baramulla On 23 Apr 2025, approximately 2-3 UI terrorists tried to infiltrate through general area Sarjeevan at Uri Nala, Baramulla, the alert tps on LC challenged and intercepted them resulting in a firefight. Operation is in progress.#Kashmir@adgpi… — Chinar Corps🍁 – Indian Army (@ChinarcorpsIA) April 23, 2025 Sources in the defence and security establishment said that the recovery of the military supplies at the encounter site signalled the terrorists' intention to execute a meticulously planned and well-equipped incursion. In another post on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) of the Indian Army reported that the ongoing operation has revealed attempts by militants based in Pakistan to destabilise J&K by utilising 'launch pads across the LOC'. On Tuesday, as ThePrint reported, four LeT terrorists, armed with AK-47 rifles with steel-tipped bullets and wearing body cameras, singled out Hindus among tourists and sprayed them with bullets in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow. At least 26 people have been confirmed killed. The Baramulla operation has led security forces to ramp up patrols and initiate new search-and-cordon missions along susceptible border areas, sources further said. They are also on high alert throughout the Kashmir Valley. Helicopter detachments and quick reaction teams are on standby across the valley as Operation Tikka continues.
