The initiative was part of a national effort by Cash for Kids, a charity that supports those youngsters affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, life-limiting illness, and additional needs. The funds were raised through a wide range of community-driven events on May 1, including dress-down days, bake sales, bingo and quiz nights, raffles, general donations as well as some individuals making personal sacrifices, such as giving up daily luxuries like coffee, to contribute to the pot. According to the charity, around 2,995 children will be given a helping hand in Cumbria as a result of the annual event. ADVERTISEMENT Nationally, £1,032,520 has been raised with the number still growing. 'People have been doing a variety of things and funds are still coming in,' said Sara Oldham, charity executive for CFM Cash for Kids. 'There are so many different people who bring something to the table. I'm just thrilled and delighted by everyone who contributes to this amazing cause. "Whilst the funds help with food poverty, it will also address activity poverty. "A lot of kids don't go on holiday or even have a day trip, local youth clubs and community centres who will be able to apply for the funds in order to help put on activities for children in the holidays throughout Cumbria," she said. Businesses and schools have also joined in. Mamma Mac's Home Bakery in West Cumbria raised £365 through a bake sale and continues to support the charity year-round. ADVERTISEMENT In Scotland, Caledonia Park placed donation tubs in food outlets, while Pirelli in Carlisle remains a consistent supporter throughout the year. Carlisle's Civic Centre was lit up in the charity's signature colours to mark the event, and Caldew Lea Primary School is also planning a bake day to raise further funds. As well as continuing to fundraise throughout the year, the charity's next major campaign, Mission Christmas, is scheduled to begin in mid-November, featuring festive events such as a Santa bike run through Carlisle and Christmas jumper days on the run up to the holidays. An online auction featuring donations from local businesses is also planned to further support the cause. To donate to Cash for Kids, you can visit
