Major WA highway blocked off after chemical spill

Credit: Supplied Sarah Steger The West Australian Firefighters are responding to an unfolding emergency in Hines Hill, where chemicals have spilled onto Great Eastern Highway after a trailer detached from a truck. The West Australian understands the trailer was carrying ammonium nitrate — a chemical compound commonly used as a fertiliser and in explosives in the mining industry — when it came loose near Neening Road on Monday afternoon. Crews from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services are at the scene of the spill, as well as multiple other agencies. Road blocks have been put up around a 3km exclusion zone, with reports of the white crystalline salt leaking from the upturned trailer. More to come.

Multiple injuries after boat capsize in mid-west

First responders turned out to reports of a 'water crash incident' that involved a capsized vessel and numerous injuries at Escape Island about 2pm on Saturday. The Department of Emergency Services dispatched the RAC Rescue Helicopter a short time later. WA Police are also responding, with a spokesperson telling The West Australian officers had received reports of an 'overdue vessel.' The West Australian understands at least two people are in the water. St John WA is also in attendance. More to come.

Public appeal after motorbike rider killed in horror crash

Major crash investigators are appealing for witnesses to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
