60 women become teachers, get back on career track
Saranya S., a homemaker, wanted to do something for herself. She had spent the last 10 years caring for her children, husband, and home. 'We have the degree, the knowledge but did not know how to re-enter the field. We wanted to do something for ourselves but didn't know how,' she said. Thanks to the Upasana Programme, she has now been trained as a teacher and has started working at a play school. The six-month Upasana Programme, run by Shraddha Maanu Foundation, aims to train women to be part-time teachers and educators. The teacher training programme is a free hybrid course where prospective teachers are trained in functional English, teaching methodologies, primary math, science, and value education. Ms. Saranya, part of the 2024 batch, graduate from the course on Thursday. Like her, 60 other women, who had to quit their career paths to look after their families, collected their course certificates at the convocation ceremony held in Chennai. Speaking at the ceremony, Madhumati Narayanan, founder and CEO, Shraddha Maanu Foundation, said: 'Empowering women to work is not just about equality, it is an economic imperative. Every woman deserves the dignity of purpose and child deserves the joy of fundamental learning, and yet in rural and peri-urban India, many women remain home-bound, underestimated, and under utilised.' Madras High Court Judge Justice G.R. Swaminathan credited his schoolteacher for his standing now in society. 'I believe that all of you graduating as teachers will also impact the lives of children positively and bring change,' he said. Urging the graduates to continue on their career path, public speaker Bharathy Bhaskar said: 'Whatever step you take, whether it's teaching math or honing a student's talent, don't stop doing it. Keep doing something.'

19-year-old stepson beheads stepmom in Thanjavur
THANJAVUR: A 35-year-old woman was hacked to death, allegedly by her stepson and his two acquaintances, while she was returning home from her shop at Udhayasuriyapuram near Pattukkottai on Monday night. The stepson, who, along with the other accused, surrendered before a judicial magistrate court in Madurai on Tuesday, murdered the woman for opposing his father's plan to buy a parcel of land and register it in his name, the police said. M Saranya, who married T Balan (45) in 2022 following the demise of her first husband about a decade ago, was running a travel agency. On Monday night after closing down the shop, Balan along with Saranya's two sons, aged 15 years and 13 years, from her previous marriage, returned home on a two-wheeler. Saranya was walking down to the house from the shop when the three-member gang waylaid her and beheaded her. Following the murder, the Vattathikkottai police registered a case. Inquiry revealed that Saranya married Balan in 2022 following the demise of her first husband about 10 years ago. Following their marriage, Balan's first wife Raji resided in Melur near Madurai with her son Kabilan (19) and a daughter. Balan planned to buy a parcel of land in Kazhuguppulikkadu at a cost of Rs 43 lakh and to register the same in Kabilan's name. This, however, led to quarrels between Balan and Saranya. Against this backdrop, Kabilan along with M Gugan (24) and P Parthiban (20) hacked Saranya to death, police stated.

Woman BJP cadre beheaded by armed gang in Thanjavur
Trichy: A 38-year-old woman BJP functionary was murdered and beheaded by an armed gang near Thanjavur on Monday night. Three people, including her stepson, surrendered in Madurai on Tuesday confessing to the crime. Incidentally, the victim, B Saranya, was arrested for hurling footwear at minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan's car near Madurai in 2022. However, Thanjavur SP R Rajaram told TOI that the murder was the result of a domestic dispute and had no political angle to who hailed from Madurai, was Mahila Morcha organiser and its former district secretary. She was living with her second husband, Balan, in Udayasuriyapuram village near Pattukottai in Thanjavur after her first husband, Shanmugasundaram, passed away. Her two sons were also staying with them. The couple ran a travel service and a photocopy shop near 9pm on Monday, Saranya closed her shop and was walking home through Kadai Theru when an armed gang obstructed her. They assaulted her with weapons, beheaded her, and fled. On realising that Saranya had not yet returned, her family went in search of her. They found her body a few metres away from the house. Police sent Saranya's body to Pattukottai General Hospital for autopsy. On Tuesday, three people, B Kapilan, Parthiban and Gugan, surrendered at a court in Madurai, owning up to the to police, Kapilan was the son of Balan from his first marriage. "Saranya was opposed to dividing her husband's assets and allocating a part of it to his son Kapilan. Kapilan was upset with his stepmother's actions. Hence, he murdered her with the aid of two friends," SP Rajaram said. He said a team has been sent to Madurai to take custody of the suspects. In 2022, Saranya was among nine people arrested for hurling a slipper at the vehicle of minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan's car near Pudupatti. She was later released on shock over the murder, BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan, MLA, said crimes against women in Tamil Nadu are rising by the day. "The incident shows that criminals do not fear the Dravidian Model govt. What will be the response of the Chief Minister, who said he will deal with crimes with an 'iron hand," she said in her post on X.
