Palamu edu dept mulls moringa plantations across govt schools

altonganj: Officials in the Palamu district education department is mulling to plant Moringa saplings in govt school campuses across the district during this monsoon season.
"Our govt schools, primary (classes I to V) and upper primary (classes VI to VIII) have enough space on their campuses. We will motivate the school management committee and Saraswati Vahini Mata Samiti to plant Moringa saplings. If cooked with lentils, Moringa leaves will provide additional nutrition for the students in their mid-day meals (MDM)," district superintendent of education (DSE) Sandeep Kumar said.
The are 2,499 primary and upper primary govt schools in Palamu district.
At present, MDM have a set menu and consist of eggs, which are served twice a week. "The footfall of students on their respective campuses increases on Monday and Friday when eggs are given. Eggs are proving a major draw for students to their schools," he added. When asked about ragi in the MDM menu in the govt schools, the DSE said, "Ragi is very much in use in the govt schools in Palamu.
