Petronas invested RM25bil in Sarawak last year, says deputy premier
Sarawak deputy premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the Petronas investments include nine initial hydrocarbon discoveries and two oil fields.
PETALING JAYA : Petronas invested RM25 billion in Sarawak last year, according to deputy premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Awang Tengah, who is also the state's minister for trade, industry and investment, said the investments included nine initial hydrocarbon discoveries and two major production milestones: the Kasawari field in Block SK316 and the Jerun field in Block SK408.
'Offshore development and exploration projects are being carried out to ensure future energy security.
'Petronas is intensifying frontier exploration … and strategic partnerships in seismic processing. These efforts reinforce Sarawak's key role in Malaysia's energy sector and support long-term energy security and economic growth,' he said at the state assembly today.
Awang Tengah also said Sarawak viewed natural gas as a crucial transition fuel in the global move towards net-zero emissions and was committed to its responsible development.
He said the Sarawak Gas Roadmap aims to harness the state's abundant natural gas reserves – which make up over 60% of Malaysia's total – to drive industrialisation, enhance energy security, and attract sustainable investments.
'As part of this initiative, a RM100 million city gas trunkline project in Bintulu will soon be implemented to expand access to clean and affordable energy for households and businesses.
'In addition, the RM1 billion Samalaju Pipeline will deliver 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day from Bintulu to the Samalaju Industrial Park,' he said.
The installation of this pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
