KUCHING (May 13): Thirty-five participants from across the state took part in the Sarawak State Basic Race Marshal Course 2025 organised at the Temporary Circuit of the Sarawak Sports Corporation in Petra Jaya recently. They were enlightened on the fundamental role of a marshal, flag signalling systems, and emergency communication tools as well as realistic circuit simulations based on race-day scenarios. A press release said those who passed the course were awarded a Race Marshal Licence from the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) and a certificate of recognition from the Sarawak Department of Youth and Sports (JBS). Participants who did not pass received a certificate of attendance and were encouraged to return next year. The two-day training was jointly organised by the Sarawak Motorsports Association (SMA), MAM and JBS. SMA president Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim officiated at the closing ceremony on Sunday. He commended the participants from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri for their discipline and commitment throughout the training. Ahmad called race marshals the unsung heroes of motorsports, serving as the eyes and ears of the race organisers — crucial for the safety and smooth operation of every event. He pledged that SMA would continue efforts in developing a highly-trained local marshal network, not only for state-level events but also for national and regional championships. He also highlighted Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's announcement last year on establishing a permanent race circuit in Gedong, a landmark initiative to further boost motorsports infrastructure, training, and employment opportunities in the region. The participants are expected to be involved in upcoming major events such as the Borneo Star Drift Battle 2025, Borneo Extreme Motocross Challenge 2025, and other potential events including drag races, go-kart races, and 4×4 challenges.
