‘BPSCL yet to pay fine, curb pollution from fly ash pond'
Bokaro: The Bokaro Power Supply Company Limited (BPSCL) is yet to pay the Rs 2.05 crore fine imposed on it by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) in early April for environmental degradation from its fly ash pond inside Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL). Even though 50 days have passed since JSPCB's notice, all six of its fly ash pond compartments remain filled. Ash laden water continues to overflow to Garga river, and onwards to Damodar from the cooling pond. While Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy has blamed BSL and BPSCL for their lackadaisical approach. JSPCB member secretary Rajiv Lochan Bakshi said BPSCL was yet to implement preventive measures despite the situation worsening. BPSCL CEO Sudhir Kumar Jha, said, "We are working on strengthening the dyke and outlet channel to stop the flow of fly ash into the cooling pond. ISM-Dhanbad will assess the fly ash pond and provide us consultancy for its better functioning." TNN

MLA, locals stage protests as water crisis deepens in Mango
Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy led a sit-in outside the office of East Singhbhum deputy commissioner on Thursday to demand a permanent solution to the ongoing water crisis being faced by the residents of 36 wards of Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) during the summer months. Besides residents of Mango, several politicians from the NDA fold also attended. Roy said he was compelled to stage protests as despite his best efforts over the last four months, the problem remained unaddressed. "I suspect a conspiracy behind the problem. Despite assurances from the top officials at the secretariat level, the officials at the lower rung are not working to translate assurance into action," Roy claimed. Roy said some forces were conspiring to fail the Rs 125 crore Mango Drinking Water Project. The MLA stated that 75% of the population in Mango is not getting water in their taps, while the municipal and the drinking water and sanitation department officials are least bothered to repair the burntmotors of the water treatment plant and overhead water tanks. "At Baliguma, households are not receiving even a drop of water due to the delay in laying the water supply pipeline on NH 33," he said. Locals also protests outside a water treatment plant in Jawahar Nagar.

MGM buildings a death trap, say junior doctors
Jamshedpur: The collapse of the dilapidated balcony from the third floor of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) is primarily the fault of the hospital management, according to several stakeholders and politicians. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The three-storey building, which houses the children's ward on the ground floor, the gynaecology ward on the first floor and the medicine ward on the second and third floors, is a six-decade-old structure. Built in 1961, the medicine block has been experiencing considerable damage over time with reports of plaster falling from the ceiling of the building appearing in the media regularly. The building was last repaired in the 2022-23 period for Rs 39 lakh but officials have said the repair was not properly done. About six months after the repair, plaster of the ceiling disintegrated in several places and seepage occurred. The employees at the ward, particularly the cleaning staff and the patients, brought the matter to the knowledge of the authorities but there was no action. At least on 10 different occasions in last two years, reports of the falling plaster from the three buildings appeared in the media. "For the last nine years, I have been raising the issue of the dilapidated building with the hospital management and the building construction department, but nothing worthwhile has happened. The balcony collapse incident has exposed the state of affairs of the govt hospital," Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy. The MGMMCH Junior Doctors' Association president, Dr Ganesh Shrivastav, said all three connected buildings of MGMMCH are in a broken-down state, inviting risk to the lives of the hospital staff, patients and visitors. "It wouldn't be incorrect to say that the wards n the three old buildings are death traps," Dr Shrivastav said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A senior doctor at the gynaecology ward said on condition of anonymity that the state health secretary was eager to shift the OPD and the indoor services to the new hospital at Dimna but due to the lackadaisical approach of the hospital authorities, the shifting couldn't be done, so far.

Mango flyover to get 2 lanes, service road
Jamshedpur : The upcoming Mango flyover in the city will now have a two-lane road and service roads on its flanks to facilitate the movement of local motorists. As per the previous design, a single lane was proposed from Mango roundabout to Payal Cinema. Now, there will be a two-lane road on the stretch, officials said on Saturday. The construction work for the 2.8 km long flyover project began in September last year. A total of Rs 461 crore is to be spent for the project. Officials claimed that the project will be ready early 2026. The proposed changes to the design came to light after senior officials of the state road construction department and the construction company inspected the project on Saturday along with Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy. "Changes were made to the design based on the demands of locals, who said a single lane will not be useful," he said. The proposed single lane would have convenience motorists coming in from Sakchi. However, the new design will make way for the movement of vehicles coming approaching from Payal Cinema end. A roundabout will also be built near the theatre alongside a parking lot under the flyover. "Forest land near Payal Cinema will have to be acquired for the implementation of the revised design," Deepak Sahay, executive engineer of the RCD, said.
