Pupil by day, DJ by night

SASOLBURG – Weekdays, she is at school pushing her academics, and on weekends, she plays house music at different nightlife establishments and parties. Hlalefang Tsotetsi, popularly known as Lollipop Stacy, is a Sasolburg-based disc jockey known for her distinctive and unique music selection. Born and bred in Zamdela, the 17-year-old said she started playing music using a DJing app on a cellphone till she met her mentor. Speaking to Ster, the bubbly soul said, 'I always loved music from an early age. I learnt how to play and deliver quality step music, deep house, and general house tunes.' Explaining how her journey unfolded, Tsotetsi said, 'I played so well on the phone that many classmates advised me to look for a DJing school. But instead, I met my mentor, Pastor Ma Inno, who took me through playing on CDJs.' Setting herself as a different brand, Tsotetsi said her unique genre blend makes her lovable. 'I mix unexpected styles to create a distinctive sound for my audience. I also interact with my crowd; I go through crowd-sourcing song requests or incorporating real-time feedback,' she said. With a dream to play both in South Africa and abroad, Tsotetsi said she's eyeing big stages. 'Collaborating with big producers and artists is my dream. My calling is playing at big events internationally and nationally. Ultimately, my goal is to become a respected and sought-after DJ known for energy, creativity, and passion for music,' she said. Having love for her audience, Tsotetsi said, 'Fame will not drive me. I want to be known as that one disc jockey who the audience can access.' While music puts bread on her table, Tsotetsi said she wants to study sound engineering to create a brighter future for herself. 'There are many job opportunities in this field of study. Even if DJing doesn't work out for me, I will still get to do what I love most [sound], and pave a brighter future on the side.'
