4 charged with injuring man with parang

(File pic) BUTTERWORTH : Four men pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to charges of injuring a man with a parang on May 16. K Ravindran, 28, and D Sathea, 32, were jointly charged along with two others still at large with causing grievous injuries to Ooi Jing Wei, 36, using a parang. Ilyas Kalairasan Abdullah, 33, and B Thanabala Singam, 53, were charged with abetting the crime. Ravindran and Sathea were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon. Ilyas Kalairasan and Thanabala Singam were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326, for abetment. The offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, as well as a fine or whipping, upon conviction. Judge Nor Azah Kasran set bail at RM7,000 for each accused and fixed July 1 for mention of the case.

Four men claim trial to causing grievous Injury, abetment
BUTTERWORTH: Four men were charged in the Sessions Court here today over an armed assault on a man here last week. K. Ravindran, 28, D. Sathea, 32, Muhammad Ilyas Kalaiarasan Abdullah, 33, and B. Thanabala Singam, 53, claimed trial to their respective charges, which were read before Judge Nor Azah Kasran. Ravindran and Sathea, along with two others still at large, were jointly charged with having a common intention to cause grievous injury to one Ooi Jing Wei, 36, using a dangerous weapon, namely a parang, in front of Jalan Perak Duck, Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth, at about 8.35pm on May 15. The charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code. Meanwhile, Ilyas and Thanabala Singam were jointly charged with abetting Ravindran and Sathea in committing the offence, which involved causing grievous injury to Ooi using a parang, between 4.04pm and 8.35pm on the same day. Ilyas and Thanabala Singam were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326 of the Penal Code. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed Riyaludin prosecuted while the accused were represented by lawyer Y. Yogeswaran. Rifaie did not offer bail. He said, however, that if the court decides to grant bail to the four men, it should be set at RM10,000 each. "We also request the court to impose additional conditions that the accused do not disturb the victim and that they report to the nearest police station once a month," he said. Meanwhile, Yogeswaran asked for a lower bail amount, stating that his client had cooperated with the police throughout the investigation. He said Sathea was a contractor with a father in critical condition at the hospital, while Ravindran was a bachelor. "As for Ilyas, he is supposed to tie the knot next week and has to support his single mother. "Thanabala Singam is unemployed and has to provide for his wife and four children," he said. Nor Azah set bail at RM7,000 with one surety for each of the accused. She also ordered them not to disturb the victim until the case concludes and to report to the nearest police station once a month. All four posted bail. The victim also attended today's court proceedings, with his hand in a bandage. It was reported that seven men were arrested to assist in investigations into a slashing case on Jalan Raja Uda here. During the incident, the victim and a male friend were heading to a restaurant for a meal. As he opened his car door to go to the restaurant, he was attacked from behind by a masked suspect. The victim tried to flee, but was hit by a car driven by the suspects, causing him to fall. Three men attacked the victim with parang.
