Lando Norris insists McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri is not his only title rival
Norris reignited his stuttering bid to land a first championship by winning from pole position in Monaco to reduce the deficit to Piastri to just three points. Piastri has four victories to Norris' two, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen the only driver outside of McLaren to win a grand prix this season. Verstappen is now 25 points behind Piastri – with fourth-placed Mercedes driver George Russell 62 points adrift – but speaking ahead of the ninth round of the season in Spain, Norris said: 'Mathematically I feel like probably the whole grid can win the championship at the minute so if you think it is just out of me and Oscar then you are a bit silly. 'There are plenty of opportunities. I expect Ferrari will get better as the season goes on. 'And Max can still win. Come on! We are racing Max every weekend. He's been on the podium several times, he has won races, he beat us in Imola fair and square because he was quicker. 'I don't know what possibly makes you think that it's only between the McLaren drivers.' Norris, 25, will regain the lead of the championship he lost after last month's Saudi Arabia Grand Prix if he follows up his win in Monte Carlo with another triumph on Sunday. 'It's a great feeling to be in the lead of the championship, and to have more points than everyone, but again it is not something I look at and it is not something that changes anything I do day to day,' he continued. 'It doesn't change how hard I work or what I try to achieve. I will try to win this weekend and I'll try and win in Montreal, and I'll try and win in Austria. And it's got nothing to do with what position I am (in the championship).' Lando Norris addresses the media ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix (Bradley Collyer/PA) A new technical directive will be introduced at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya to clamp down on flexible front wings which some believe has contributed towards McLaren's dramatic rise. The British team won the constructors' championship last season and have claimed six out of the eight wins so far in 2025. However, when asked if he was concerned McLaren will be affected by the rule change, Norris said: 'No, not at all. There are tweaks here and there, but nothing that will change how we have to do it.' Williams' Carlos Sainz continued: 'There has been a lot of talk regarding this technical directive but I don't think it will affect teams as much as people think. I wouldn't expect more than a one-tenth swing up and down the field.'

Max Verstappen slams Red Bull over pit-lane crash in Miami sprint
Max Verstappen was left annoyed with Red Bull after they caused his pit-lane crash with Kimi Antonelli during the Miami sprint race. 18-year-old Mercedes star Antonelli started on pole for Saturday's sprint which descended into chaos before the race had even begun. Unusual heavy rain in the build-up caused Charles Leclerc to crash on his way to the grid, before the sprint was red-flagged as drivers complained of visibility issues. On the restart, Antonelli lost the lead to Oscar Piastri who seemed certain to win until the final few laps when Lando Norris jumped his McLaren teammate thanks to a well-timed pit-stop and safety car. Midway through the sprint, with the track rapidly drying, Verstappen stopped for dry tyres only for his Red Bull pit crew to release him into the path of Antonelli. The Dutchman hit the back of the Mercedes, heavily damaging his front wing and forcing the Italian to abort his stop. Antonelli eventually finished out of the points in 10th while Verstappen crossed the line fourth, but was unsurprisingly slapped with a 10-second penalty for the unsafe release. As the sprint finished under the safety car with the grid close together, the penalty dropped the reigning champion down to 17th, losing valuable ground in the championship battle with Piastri and Norris. 'Come on guys!' Verstappen fumed over the team radio, with this the latest pit error involving Red Bull this season. 'They have all been different incidents [this year]. You can't compare these things,' the 27-year-old told Sky Sports afterward. 'We all don't want that to happen but it happened. It's something we need to investigate but I'm just happy no one got injured. 'With these cars if you hit someone, it's not great. It's super clear what happened, so there's not much more for me to add.' More Trending 'It was a human error. We'll learn from it,' Red Bull boss Christian Horner simply added, but his Mercedes counterpart was not impressed. But a visibly furious Toto Wolff wasn't satisfied however, with the Mercedes boss saying: 'If it was the main race that would be seriously annoying. 'But I am surprised about the total lack of judgement there because he wasn't even close to releasing without any security concerns so somebody panicked.' All drivers and teams will be hoping for a calmer qualifying on Saturday night before the main grand prix on Sunday. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari teammate crashes out of Miami sprint before race starts
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc bizarrely crashed out of the Miami Grand Prix sprint race… while driving on the way to the grid. Formula 1 is at the Miami International Autodrome this weekend, with the second sprint race of the season taking place on Saturday before qualifying for Sunday's main event. 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli shockingly claimed pole for the sprint ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, with Leclerc due to start in sixth ahead of teammate Sir Lewis Hamilton. But in a shocking turn of events, heavy rain hit Miami in the build-up to the race with plenty of standing water on the track as drivers took their cars round to the grid. And amid the spray and chaos, Leclerc smashed his Ferrari into the wall at high-speed, badly damaging the car and while he tried to continue, it was clear the wheels and suspension were broken and beyond repair.
