‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' star Charlie Vickers breaks down Sauron's emotional reaction to killing Celebrimbor
Charlie Vickers didn't see his big twist coming. 'Going into the second season, it was really nice to have a real clear through line and to know exactly where the character was going,' says The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star. Vickers explains that he shot several episodes of Season 1 without knowing that his character, Halbrand, was actually the dark lord Sauron in disguise. What a relief then, to have all of his cards on the table for Season 2. Vickers joined Gold Derby to discuss his portrayal of the fearsome J.R.R. Tolkien villain (watch the full interview above), including Sauron's new form called Annatar. More from GoldDerby Netflix renews 'The Four Seasons,' 'The Diplomat,' and 'Bridgerton' for new seasons Jeremy Allen White and Austin Butler team up for 'Enemies,' Maya Hawke joins 'Hunger Games' prequel, 'Smurfs' trailer drops, and more top news Tony Talk: Predicting the tricky musical acting categories including Audra McDonald vs. Nicole Scherzinger Sauron holds the power to change his appearance, which affords Vickers the opportunity to play two starkly different iterations of the character. Halbrand feels distinctly human, a 'low man' who works with his hands. By contrast, Annatar is ethereal, regal, and possesses a calm command of any room he enters. 'He's a Maia, which means basically he's a demigod,' explains Vickers, 'So you're going from playing a regular guy to this guy that is larger than life. So I had to learn a whole new way of moving.' Within the actor's physicality is a simmering power that Annatar dare not show. 'He's a lot more still and a lot more controlled and contained,' says Vickers, 'it is quite fun to play with the potential of this energy that is within him.' Sauron creates the character of Annatar in order to exploit Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), the elven smith the dark lord recruits to forge the rings of power. Vickers and Edwards spend the majority of Season 2 locked in a thrilling game of cat and mouse, with Sauron preying upon the elf's pride in order to coerce him to forge more rings. 'It's this persona that he thinks Celebrimbor will respond to,' explains Vickers, 'So there has to be this thing of wisdom and of knowledge because Celebrimbor is the greatest elvin smith that's ever lived, and who's he going to listen to?' Even though Sauron is a being of immense power, not everything with Celebrimbor goes according to plan. The elf eventually sees through the dark lord's illusion, causing Sauron to lose his cool and abruptly change course. This malleable quality is part of what Vickers loves about the character. 'He has to think on his feet and change his tactics all the time because Celebrimbor is throwing things at him that he doesn't expect,' describes the actor, 'And I think that's one of the interesting things about Sauron is that he's always two steps ahead, but he's by no means an evil mastermind … he has to adjust and react to people. Things go wrong for him.' This precarious dance between the two characters ultimately ends in Celebrimbor's murder by Sauron's hand (and many arrows). Vickers imbues the moment with genuine human emotion as the audience watches Sauron grow emotional over the loss of his creative partner. 'He's kind of lost,' admits Vickers. 'It's very un-Sauron of him to lose control and kill someone that could be useful in the future. And he's, I think, grieving what he has become.' Thus far, Vickers has walked a fine line by discovering ways of inserting humanity into his villainous role. But this dark moment marks a transition point according to the performer. 'It's not all gone,' says Vickers of Sauron's humanity, 'but he is entering into a different phase of his journey. The light in him that remains … is being snuffed out by his desire to control everything and to rule everything … he is falling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole.' The Rings of Power's Cast Teases What's in Store for Gandalf and Sauron in Season 3
After it was revealed that the Stranger was Gandalf at the end of season two of Prime Video's The Rings of Power, fans of the Tolkien universe origin series have anticipated the handling of how the hero will rise. There's also the matter of what Sauron will do as he gathers his own power. In a conversation with Deadline, Daniel Weyman (Gandalf) and Charlie Vickers (Sauron) discussed how this next season is important character building for the legends they'll later become. For Gandalf, Weyman teased that it involves a lot of 'tears' and continued, 'I'm excited for this plethora of possible pitfalls, errors, and failings that young Gandalf can learn from. Literally anything could happen, because the only way we're going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things, and puts his foot in the wrong places, and has to pick it up and learn again. So I'm hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love.' Vickers jumped in describing how Sauron might not take it lightly that he was rejected by Galadriel, but is ready to go at his quest for power alone. 'I'm incredibly lucky that Sauron in this time period is very specific to what he does. We get to go through so many exciting beats that I think fans will be really excited to see. I mean, he has made nearly all the rings now, but there's one more that he [needs] to finish the collection, which he's determined and has had in his mind for centuries. So, I'm super excited to see him go on the journey and hopefully take over Middle-earth… I'm sure everything will be great for everyone else.' Rings of Power Season one and two are currently streaming on Prime.
