Youngstown Mayor candidates debate for the first time
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — This year, Youngstown voters will decide on who will be mayor and Monday night, the two candidates running as Democrats in the May 6 primary debated for the first time. It was candidate's night at New Bethal Baptist Church where Tito Brown and Samantha Turner got a chance to explain why they should be elected. Samantha Turner spoke first, saying her priorities if elected Youngstown mayor were a zero tolerance on crime, economic development through developing existing businesses, and reducing poverty. 'In the spirit of collaboration, we'll work with organizations like YMHA and the Home for Goods and the banks to ask how will you help reduce and create a better mindset shift,' Turner said. When Tito Brown spoke, he touted his eight years in office in dealing with both crime and economic development. 'Crime is down by 40 percent. We're seeing unprecedented investment in the city of Youngstown and the community right now is better for our quality of living that we have in our ways,' Brown said. Among the questions asked where the candidates stood on downtown's DoubleTree hotel — which continues to owe the city money. 'It's crowded. It's full. It's performing well, so we're going to take those opportunities and take those monies and make sure it's a better quality of life,' said Brown. 'But I will say, we have mishandled that relationship and allowed them to take advantage of our community and our residents,' Turner said. The possibility of getting another grocery store into the city was brought up, with Brown saying Youngstown is funding one itself. 'So what I did, I just took $1.5 million and put an organization together to start planning and developing our own co-op. If they won't come, we have to do it ourselves,' he said. Samantha Tuner said we talk a lot about the grocery store we don't have while we should be talking about the grocery stores we do have. 'We do have a Save-A-Lot on the North Side, Save-A-Lot on the East Side. We have two Hispanic markets and a meat market, Dollar General Market, Sparkle over in Cornersburg, and then on top of that, we have free bus rides on WRTA. So we do have access. Let's talk about positive things we have in our city,' Turner said. 'I took on this job and I said I would not cave to money, power and politics, and ladies and gentlemen, I stand today and I say I've never done any of that,' Brown said. Both candidates said they would retain Barry Finley as Fire Chief — though Samantha Turner added that Finley should be getting more support for the good things he has done. Skimming device found installed at South Jersey grocery store
The Brief Police in South Jersey are sounding the alarm after a skimming device was found in a Camden County store. Police say the device was installed over a credit card machine at the Save-A-Lot in Pennsauken. They have a warning for potential victims. PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Pennsauken Police say if you shopped at a Save-A-Lot between March 2nd and 6th and used a credit card machine, it's highly recommended you alert your credit card company. What we know Police in Pennsauken say a skimming device was found at a grocery store on Federal Street. They are warning customers of the Save-A-Lot to check with their credit card companies to determine if there are suspicious charges. The device was placed over a keypad on March 2nd, at about 1 p.m. and it was removed on March 6th. Anyone who shopped in the store on any of those days should contact their credit card companies. What they're saying Customer Lidia Gonzalez was shocked and said, "That is very crazy. I had no idea. No idea. That's very scary. That makes me very nervous, even shopping online and all that kind of stuff. But yeah, it makes me very nervous." Customer Christy Pena audibly gasped and stated, "You know what? Let me tell you, this week, I had a charge of $105 taken out of my card and I called Chase and I said, 'Where is this charge coming from because I paid all my bills already.'" Pena then showed the unknown charge and believes it's connected to the skimming device. She added, "It makes me feel weird and it makes me wonder who put that on the register?" The backstory This past January, Burlington Township Police released surveillance video of a man installing a skimming device at a 7-Eleven. The FBI says it only takes seconds to install one and estimates skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year. The agency recommends pulling at the edges of a credit or debit card machine keypad before using one. What you can do Customer Enrique Moraza said, "Actually, when I put my card in there, I actually pull on the device to see if there's any skimmers on there." He continued, "From YouTube videos, I see people put a skimmer on top of the device, so just give it a little tug and make sure there's nothing on top of there. That's pretty much it." A Save-A-Lot manager says they're cooperating with police on the investigation and are taking extra precautions to protect customers. Anyone with information about the skimming device is urged to contact Pennsauken Police Det. Madden at (856) 488-0080 Ext-2499 or rmadden@
