'Rekha Wanted To Spend Evenings With Amitabh Bachchan': Ranjeet On Why She Left His Film
Last Updated: Ranjeet shares how Rekha chose evenings with Amitabh over shooting Kaaranama. There are many stories about Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha — some on screen, many off it. But few are told as directly and candidly as this one. In a chat with Rediff in 2015, Ranjeet recalled how a personal request from Rekha led to a major casting change in his directorial debut. 'After I quit acting, I wrote a script and decided to direct a film with Dharmendra, Rekha and Jaya Prada," he shared. It was a promising start. Rekha, his longtime friend and co-star from his very first film Sawan Bhadon, was on board. 'Rekha and I were good friends since I gave the first shot of my life with her in Sawan Bhadon.," he recalled. But the project, titled Kaaranama, soon faced a twist that had little to do with cinema. Ranjeet said, 'The entire first schedule of Kaaranama was an evening shift. One day, Rekha called and requested if I could move the schedule to a morning shift as she wanted to spend the evenings with Amitabh Bachchan." The request, though personal, couldn't be accommodated. 'I cordially refused, so she left the film and returned the signing amount." The fallout was immediate. The film's schedule was delayed, Dharmendra moved on to other commitments, and suggested Anita Raaj as a replacement for Rekha. Eventually, Kaaranama was completed with Farah, Kimi Katkar, and Vinod Khanna. 'It did average business (when it released in 1990)," the iconic villain said. Ranjeet made another attempt with Gajab Tamasha (1992), starring Anu Agarwal and Rahul Roy, but it didn't succeed. Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha's electrifying on-screen chemistry, especially in Silsila (1981), has long been a subject of fascination — fueling conversations, headlines and speculation for decades. While Silsila remains their most iconic and talked-about films, the duo shared screen space in several other films that showcased their effortless onscreen rapport. Some of their memorable films together include Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Mr. Natwarlal (1979), Suhaag (1979), Do Anjaane (1976), and Ram Balram (1980). Amitabh Bachchan is married to Jaya Bachchan and have two children – Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan. Rekha was briefly married to industrialist Mukesh Agarwal in 1990, the marriage ended tragically with his death the following year.

But not all stories made it to the public eye — until this one time actor Ranjeet revealed how Rekha once chose personal time with Amitabh over a film role. A dream project with Rekha and Dharmendra After years of playing the villain in Bollywood, Ranjeet decided to step behind the camera. He wrote a script and planned to direct his first film with a star-studded cast, Dharmendra, Rekha and Jaya Prada . Everything seemed to be falling into place. But things took a surprising turn, and it had nothing to do with acting. Rekha's personal request The film, which was titled 'Kaaranama', was planned with an evening shoot schedule. But one day, Ranjeet got an unexpected call from Rekha. Changing the whole shoot schedule was not possible. So, he had to say no. 'I cordially refused, so she left the film and returned the signing amount.' Exit Rekha, enter trouble Rekha's decision to walk away caused a ripple effect. The schedule was pushed back, Dharmendra moved on to other projects, and the entire plan had to change. Ranjeet said Dharmendra even suggested Anita Raaj to replace Rekha. But in the end, the film took a different direction. 'Kaaranama' was eventually completed with a new cast, including Farah, Kimi Katkar and Vinod Khanna . It hit cinemas in 1990. 'It did average business (when it released in 1990),' the iconic villain said. Among them was one actor who, at his peak, even surpassed the fame of Big B and the Kapoors. However, fate took a harsh turn. From being a top star, he faced a steep downfall and was later entangled in legal trouble following his wife's suicide, which even led him to jail. Let's identify who this actor was. The First Hero Of Rekha Here we are talking about veteran actor Naveen Nischol, who ventured into modelling after finishing school and even cleared the major round of Mr. India competition held in Delhi during the 1960s. While travelling to Mumbai for the final round, he met his father's friend, renowned filmmaker Mohan Segal. After a while, Segal advised Naveen to join the Film Institute in Pune to gain proper training in cinema. In upcoming years, Mohan Segal gave Naveen his big break and featured him opposite Rekha in 'Sawan Bhadon', which became debut film for both future stars and he initially became the first hero to feature with the legendary actress. Became Bigger Than Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna Released in 1970, the debut film of Naveen became a major hit, which gave him instant fame. Filmmakers began approaching him eagerly, and he went on to star in films like 'Victoria No. 203,' 'Dhund', and 'Hanste Zakhm.' At a point, he was even regarded as a bigger star than Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. Interestingly, Amitabh played a negative role in 1971 romantic drama 'Parwana', while Naveen was the lead with veteran actress Yogita Baali. However, by the mid-70s, box office failures began affecting Naveen's career, pushing him toward supporting and character roles, which caused a huge downfall in his career graph. When Naveen Landed Into A Serious Legal Trouble Naveen Nischol's first marriage was to Neelu Kapoor, who was the niece of Dev Anand and sister of renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. However, rumours of his involvement with actress Padmini Kapila led to the breakdown of the marriage that later turned into divorce. He later tied the knot with Geetanjali, who was previously divorced. On April 22, 2006, Geetanjali committed suicide and left a note in which she accused Naveen of mental harassment and alleged that his brother Praveen, encouraged it. The note mentioned ' I, Geetanjali Navin Nischol, am committing suicide because Shri Navinji is an alcoholic and is beyond reform, because of his alcoholism, I am mentally tortured by him and he is being instigated by Pravin Nischol to torture me and I hold Pravin responsible for all this torture to me.' As a result, both Naveen and Praveen were taken into police custody until May 6, 2006. According to India Today, their lawyer Satish Maneshinde stated that Geetanjali was battling depression and alcoholism. The two were eventually released. On March 19, 2011 Naveen took his last breath as the actor suffered a cardiac arrest.

Director Kuljeet Pal, actor Biswajeet, and cinematographer Raja Nawathe, as per the book, had a conspiracy to shoot a kiss without talking about it to Rekha earlier. As shooting was going on, Biswajeet kissed her on the lips without warning. The act was shot by surprise, leaving the actress unaware of any such scene being shot. Years on, Biswajeet justified the act, saying it was not done for fun but was required for the movie. Rekha was said to be left shocked and embarrassed. The incident raised controversy regarding consent, professionalism, and ethics on the set—issues that were hardly recognized in the industry back then. But director Kuljeet Pal later asserted that Rekha had been apprised and had agreed to the scene. He maintained that scenes like these were few for actresses in Hindi films at that time and posited that if Rekha was ever uncomfortable, she could have brought it out in public. This inconsistent account has ever since buried the truth under mystery, but it cannot remove the emotional damage on Rekha. However later Rekha got married in 1990 to Industrialist Mukesh Agarwal, which only went for seven months as later he died by suicide. The movie, which started filming in 1969, wasn't put out on the screens until 1979—a decade that witnessed Rekha's remarkable transformation from a self-conscious teenager to a self-assured and award-winning actress.
