NCAA baseball tournament field revealed: Vanderbilt earns No. 1 seed; SEC claims 6 of top 8

Vanderbilt earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA baseball tournament for the second time in program history. The Commodores, who are in the field for the 19th consecutive season, were one of 13 teams from the SEC to make the 64-team field, the most ever from a single conference. Texas, which won the SEC regular-season championship in its first season in the league, earned the No. 2 seed. The Longhorns are making a record 64th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Advertisement The remaining eight national seeds are Arkansas, Auburn, North Carolina, LSU, Georgia and Oregon State. The other eight Regional hosts are Florida State, Ole Miss, Clemson, Oregon, Coastal Carolina, Tennessee, UCLA and Southern Miss. The 16 Regionals will feature four-team, double-elimination competitions, which will be played this weekend. The Regional winners advance to the Super Regionals for a best two out of three series to be played June 6-9. The eight Super Regional winners advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., beginning June 13. The CWS championship series begins June 21. The bracket is set, and the #RoadToOmaha starts now. ⚾️🏆 🖥️ — NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) May 26, 2025 Vanderbilt had one player on the postseason All-SEC team announced by the league last week — relief pitcher Sawyer Hawks, a second-team selection. The Commodores almost assuredly will not have a player selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. Tim Corbin's team might lack the high-end star power the program has been known for over the past decade-plus, but Vanderbilt is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores surged to the top spot by winning their final five regular-season games and then sweeping through the SEC tournament with wins over Oklahoma, Tennessee and Ole Miss. They are ranked No. 1 in the RPI and KPI, two metrics used by the selection committee, and have 29 Quad 1 and 2 wins combined — five more than any other team. Vanderbilt is in this position due to its pitching, defense and a late-season power surge that saw the Dores hit 27 home runs over their final 16 SEC games after hitting only 13 in their first 14 games. — Light Advertisement Arkansas slides in under the radar as the No. 3 national seed, but there's nothing subtle about shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, the SEC Player of the Year whose 1.105 OPS strikes fear into postseason pitching staffs. Coach Dave Van Horn, more than two decades in as the head Hog, has guided Arkansas to the CWS seven times. He's 64 and without a national championship in nine trips to Omaha as a head coach. The Razorbacks lost in Regionals at home in each of the past two seasons. Their 11 CWS visits rank the most among SEC teams yet to take home the trophy. This is the year. Arkansas swept Vanderbilt and Texas in league play, so it's got the firepower. — Sherman This might look familiar. Florida was also the darkhorse pick last season after sneaking into the field as the No. 3 seed in the Stillwater Regional — and then advancing to the semifinals of the College World Series. The 2025 Gators got off to a 1-11 start in the SEC — yes, 1-11! — but won 14 of their final 18 games to finish at 15-15 in league play. Their late-season run included series wins over Arkansas at home and at Texas, two top-five teams. Florida is dealing with several key injuries, but Kevin O'Sullivan's team has enough top-end talent to return to Omaha for the third consecutive season. — Light The Big Ten got no respect from the selection committee. Despite its new West Coast strength, the league failed to earn a national seed. Oregon, the regular-season champion, appeared in good position after an 11-game winning streak that ended Saturday. But the Ducks didn't even get close, falling to No. 12. Adding salt to the wound, rival Oregon State, a team without a conference that was swept by the Ducks in April, got the No. 8 seed and a home path to the CWS. Also from the Big Ten, UCLA snuck in as a host with the No. 15 overall; USC got shipped to Corvallis as the third of four seeds; and conference tournament champ Nebraska is in as the No. 3 seed at North Carolina. Can the Big Ten show it belongs among the heavyweights? Its representatives face a tough road. — Sherman Advertisement Oregon State played the 2025 season as an independent after getting left behind in conference realignment and choosing not to follow Washington State to the Mountain West. The Beavers went 41-12-1 against an RPI-friendly schedule that featured 35 of 54 games played either on the road or at a neutral site. A series win at home over UC Irvine was their season highlight. Beyond that, nothing stands out. Oregon State went 0-2 against SEC teams (losing neutral-site games to Auburn and Oklahoma) and lost four straight to rival Oregon in late April. This is a talented team with a high ceiling, but the resume doesn't exactly scream top-eight national seed. Can the Beavers prove their doubters wrong and return to Omaha for the first time since 2018? — Light (Photo of Ruston Rigdon: Jake Crandall / USA Today Network via Imagn Images)
