The Chase star Anne Hegerty, aka The Governess, reveals new career move away from the popular quiz show
The Chase star Anne Hegerty — known to millions of people around the world as 'The Governess' — will step away from the popular quiz show to star as The Fairy Rose in a stage production of Beauty And The Beast. Hegerty, 66, announced she would be taking up the role during the Christmas festive period over December and January at the Scarborough Spa in the UK. The character of Fairy Rose stems from the Enchanted Rose in Disney's 1991 animated movie and 2017 live action film, which acts as a clock for the Beast — each petal fall is an indication of the time he has left to find his true love and break his curse. The multi-talented quiz show star is no stranger to the stage and has previously appeared in a production of Beauty And The Beast, among other pantomines, musicals and plays. Hegerty — who has appeared on The Chase UK and The Chase Australia — will return to the quiz show after her latest stint on stage. On Tuesday, Hegerty spoke to Sunrise hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington about how she came to be a quiz master. 'I was finding (life a bit) difficult,' Hegerty said of her time before joining The Chase UK in 2010, when she had been working as a newspaper journalist and proofreader, struggling financially, and was on disability and housing benefits. 'I was a good proofreader (but) I was finding it difficult to keep up with the admin, I was spiralling a bit. 'I happened to accidentally discover there was a high-level quizzing circuit in the UK. I joined it. 'I started doing really well just at the time when The Chase had just filmed the first series, just 10 episodes, with only Mark (Labbett aka The Beast) and Shaun (Wallace aka The Dark Destroyer). 'They were thinking they were going to want a female chaser. I came on the scene at the right time.' Hegerty said she was initially called The Headmistress, before being renamed The Governess. 'Our UK host started to refer to me as The Governess. I said to producers I'd rather be called that,' she said. 'The thing about a headmistress is that she can't do everything she wants — she's got to answer to the board of governors and so on,' Hegerty explained, adding that The Governess is more like Mary Poppins. 'I want to be Mary Poppins. Really fierce.' Hegerty, who was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 45, said she's always wanted to be famous, even as a child. 'I wanted to be famous as I thought maybe I'd be a writer or maybe I'd illustrate children's books. I'm not remotely a good enough artist to do that,' she said. 'I just always thought you know, I want to be famous for something.'

The Chase's Anne Hegerty goes from Governess to Fairy Rose in exciting career move
Anne Hegerty has been known as the Governess on quiz show The Chase since 2010, but now she is set to take on a new role in Scarborough Spa Hall. Known best for her role as the headstrong Governess on ITV's The Chase, Anne Hegerty is now set to swap her TV persona for the theatre stage as she has been confirmed to be reprising an exciting role over the festive period. It has been announced on X that from December 6, the 66-year-old will once again take on the role of The Fairy Rose in Scarborough Spa's production of Beauty and the Beast. The show is set to run until January 1, 2026. "Back by popular demand", Anne will be transforming into the Fairy Rose at Spa Hall in Scarborough, reports the Express, who is otherwise known as the Enchanted Rose in the 1991 film. The post said: "We are delighted to announce that back by popular demand for Beauty and the Beast will be The Governess, Anne Hegerty! Keep your eyes peeled for MORE star names to follow." Anne is not the only star to be revealed in the poster, as singer Jake Quickenden is also revealed to be playing the role of the villainous Gaston in the festive production. This certainly isn't Anne's pantomime debut, as she had previously showcased her talents in a 2014 production of Cinderella at the Grange Theatre as the Wicked Stepmother. She then went on to play the Empress of China in Aladdin and Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty. Speaking about how she kick started her career in the panto world, Anne shared that she was contacted by a theatre producer after she set up an X account. She told the Swindon Advertiser in 2022: "I did panto [but] I was really fairly terrible the first time. I was technically bad, I used to miss cues, so I stumbled through it. Then I got offered more and I've been doing it ever since. "I enjoy doing the panto, it's a chance to act and a chance to sing, a chance to act, a chance to be funny more than one gets in The Chase. "This year I'm Fairy Flutterby, I'm not strictly a villain, I do turn the Beast into the Beast, but I was only doing it to teach him a lesson." Anne has also teased fans about possibly venturing into acting, as last year she revealed a fellow quiz show colleague had written a sitcom role specifically for her. Chatting on the 'A Very Tall Man' podcast, she said: "I'd love to be on a TV show or a film. I know various people who are trying to get things off the ground," and "One of them is the guy on The Chase, he's written a sitcom with a part for me." She went on to express excitement about the project, saying: "It would be brilliant to get that made." However, while Anne seems to be excited about scripted roles, she has ruled out the idea of returning to reality TV. After her appearance on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2018, she said: "The jungle is about as big as you can get. Everything else is a bit of a step down. The Chase star with surprising new job away from ITV quiz show
It's been revealed that a star of The Chase has recently landed a surprising new job away from the ITV quiz show. Anne Hegerty, 66, better known as The Governess on the Bradley Walsh general knowledge series, has been part of The Chase for 16 years. Since 2010, she has sometimes taken on other work in between recordings, even appearing on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2018. Among those other opportunities Anne has taken up is her history of performing in Christmas pantomimes up and down the country since 2014. And it's been announced this week that her surprising job away from The Chase is being picked back up again, with Christmas 2025 shows already booked in. The news was broken by the X account of the Spa Hall in Scarborough, which is an entertainment, conferencing, and wedding venue in the north east town. In a post, the account said: 'We are delighted to announce that back by popular demand for Beauty and the Beast will be The Governess, Anne Hegerty!' The Scarborough Spa then promised more star names, with TV presenter Jake Quickenden among them, playing the role of Gaston in the production. In the refashioned Beauty and the Beast, Anne – 'back by popular demand' – will be playing the Fairy Rose, otherwise known as the Enchanted Rose in the 1991 film. The Enchanted Rose acts as something of a clock for the Beast, with each falling petal reminding him of the time he's got – or hasn't got – left to find his true love. Scarborough Spa's productions of Beauty and the Beast will run from December 6, 2025 all the way through to New Year's Day in 2026. Despite this seeming like a surprising turn for Anne, the truth is that, when she's not playing The Chase as The Governess, she's been performing in panto for years. Repairs to Scarborough Spa concert venue planned
A series of repairs have been proposed for a Grade-II* listed concert venue. Scarborough Spa's Sun Court and Sun Suite could be renovated with new doors and windows as part of the plan by North Yorkshire Council.A council-commissioned heritage survey identified age-related defects in the fabric of the building - parts of which date back to 1858 - with the renovations seeking to improve its visual appeal and energy efficiency. The survey, done by experts from Humble Heritage, found the Sun Court and Spa Suite had "low historic interest" compared to other parts of the building, but "retained an important musical tradition". If approved, the repair works would include replacing five glazed double doors and seven window panes in the rooms, alongside repairs to other windows. The experts said the current Sun Court and Sun Suite were designed by Scarborough architect Sir Thomas Edwin Cooper and were added to the complex between 1913 and they said a glazed screen to the Sun Suite and the curved and glazed front to the bandstand – although in the original scheme – were "not built until the circa 1930s and 1950s when the chequerboard flooring was likely also added".A spa building was first built in Scarborough in around 1700, but was originally "just a timber embanked terrace to the shore", the report added. The 1858 building has a large concert hall, theatre and assembly rooms, and hosts entertainment including orchestras and council is also preparing to celebrate the town's 400th anniversary as the original spa resort next year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Inflatable bowel touring Yorkshire and Lincolnshire
A large model of a bowel is being displayed to raise awareness of bowel and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance (HNYCA) said it hoped the inflatable, which is more than 6ft 6in (2m) tall and 11ft 5in (3.5m) long, would "get people talking about bowel cancer and the importance of screening".The campaign is part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, which is being held in April, and will be visiting shopping centres and other community spaces in Yorkshire and Hughes, clinical director at Humber and Yorkshire Coast Bowel Cancer Screening Centre, said: "Anyone who sees the bowel is going to want to know more." Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK and is responsible for the second highest number of cancer deaths. More than 16,800 people die from bowel cancer in the UK every year, HNYCA the number of people dying from the disease has been falling for several decades due to greater awareness, they cancer can affect anyone of any age. More than nine in 10 new cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, but more than 2,600 new cases are diagnosed in people aged under 50 every year. Time and dates The inflatable bowel will be at the following venues in 4 April, Scunthorpe Central Community Centre, from 11:00 to 16:00 9 April, North Point Shopping Centre, Hull, from 10:00 to 15:00Monday 14 April, Scarborough Spa, from 10:00 to 16: 29 April, Bridlington Spa, from 10:00 to 12: Hughes added: "We want to make people aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer, which include changes in your poo, needing to go to the toilet to poo more or less often than what is normal for you, blood in your poo, tummy pain, losing weight without trying, and feeling really tired, for no apparent reason."Paula Brown, programme manager at the screening centre, has urged people to take a home said: "We understand people feel embarrassed to talk about poo or think about toilet matters but we would urge you to overcome this and do this painless and easy test."
