Young man killed in shooting during parking lot 'gathering' near New Castle, police say

A 19-year-old man died after being shot in a New Castle-area neighborhood the night of June 5, New Castle County Police said. Officers were called to the 100 block of Ryan Ave. in the Rose Hill Gardens neighborhood about 9:25 p.m. for reports of the shooting. Police said a "gathering" was taking place in a parking lot. "Numerous people" were in attendance, police said. At some point, a gun was fired and Tahjir Pipkin was shot multiple times in his upper body. It's not clear whether an argument broke out or what led to the shooting. Police and emergency medical personnel tried to perform first aid on Pipkin, who was rushed to Christiana Hospital. He died there, police said. The homicide came a day after a man was shot in the face near New Castle by 31-year-old Kyle Schaal. The victim told police Schaal was his girlfriend's "stalker." (WCIA) — Chatham Police are recognizing a sergeant who recently talked a teenage woman out of taking her own life. In a Facebook post Tuesday, Chatham Police said that Sergeant Travis Schaal was recently on patrol when he noticed a vehicle parked with its headlights on near the trains tracks in the 200 block of N State St. This situation was occurring late at night, and Schall had seen this vehicle in the same spot about two hours before. Upon engaging with the driver, he learned it was an 18-year-old woman who said she was 'OK' and tried to reassure Schaal that everything was fine. Using skills he learned in crisis intervention training, he made small talk with the woman for a few minutes, at which point she admitted the real reason for her presence there. She told Schall that she had been struggling at home and in school and that she knew the train schedule and was waiting for the next train to come. The woman planned on laying down on the tracks to take her own life. After the brief talk, Schaal convinced her to come back to the police department to talk more with him. The woman was then transported to a local hospital for mental health treatment. 'She thanked him for treating her like a human being and credited him with saving her life,' part of the Facebook post reads. The woman admitted she had always been afraid of first responders, but her interaction with Schaal changed her stance on them, the department added. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
