Valparaiso unveils new playground designed for children of all abilities
Melissa Schick of Chesterton is amazed at the 'thought, imagination and caring design' used to create that latest addition to the Valparaiso Parks System. On Friday morning, Schick and her 37-year-old son Mark, who is a proud athlete and participant in the annual Special Olympics competitions, joined more than 200 gathered for Valparaiso Parks Department's unveiling of the new, inclusive playground at Foundation Meadows Park, described as 'a state-of-the-art play space thoughtfully designed for children of all abilities.' 'I wish there had been something like this for Mark and others 30 years ago,' said Schick, who was joined by her daughter-in-law and children, Rain, nearly a year old, and River, 2. They all marveled at the new landscape at Foundation Meadows Park, 3210 N. Campbell St. in Valparaiso. 'This incredible 5,230-square-foot playground, built through the rePLAY initiative, is a testament to Valpo Parks' commitment to providing meaningful spaces where all children can play, explore, and connect,' Valpo Parks Director Kevin Nuppnau said. 'The design incorporates innovative features to ensure accessibility and engagement for every child.' Among the highlights are the 12-foot-high Aventus Tower, an accessible tower with platforms allowing anyone of any ability to climb and explore and billed as 'the first of its kind.' A range of 10 slides safely serves all ages and thrill levels. There are 15 ground-level activities and eight sensory play experiences for discovery. Seven elevated components, all accessible by ramp, oversee the entire terrain and a large sled-like bench swing is designed for both children and their caregivers and large enough to welcome wheelchairs. According to Nuppnau, the park construction began in January, and the total cost was around $500,000, with a large portion of that cost dedicated to the price of the smooth, poured-in-place surfacing throughout the park space that is ideal for wheelchairs and other mobility devices. 'Valpo Parks extends its sincere gratitude for the collective hard work of parks staff and our partners at GameTime which made the equipment and Sinclair Recreation which developed the design and offered such key contributions to make this dream a reality,' Nuppnau said. Jessica Sharp, clinical director for Kidworks, LLC. Pediatric Therapy Center in Chesterton, said the new park will 'allow all kids to be kids, despite compromised abilities. 'Thank you Valparaiso Parks for this new space,' Sharp said. 'The equipment and features in this new park address sensory needs, coordination, communication with kids, motor skills, physical exercise and most of all, a place for young spirits to build up their confidence. Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas performed the ribbon-cutting honors with the help of his own grandchildren Bill and Ellen. 'Foundation Meadows Park was developed in the early 2000s, and it's the park of my own past,' Costas said. 'Today, this is the park of the future.' Tristan Leonhard, assistant director of Valparaiso Parks Department, said the new park unveiling is part of the rePLAY initiative to prioritize enhancing patron accessibility, address infrastructure needs, implement safety measures and invest in sustainability practices. He said the rePLAY initiative is funded by using bond proceeds originally earmarked for what was last year's proposed sports park that are now being put to immediate use for long-term benefits. 'Park renovations and construction are expected to be completed by the end of the year,' Leonhard said. Patrik Schick set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen this summer opnening the door for a Victor Boniface departure
Bild reports that Patrik Schick is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, which opens the door for a Victor Boniface departure. New Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag has decided to make Schick his number one striker next season and has vetoed any departure this summer. The 29-year-old was unhappy with his playing time at the backend of last season and was looking to leave this summer, with Bayern Munich interested. Advertisement Now, Schick will be Leverkusen's main striker, and his backup will be Christian Kofane, who is set to join from Spanish side Albacete for €5m. The Czechia international scored 21 goals this season, five behind top scorer Harry Kane, despite Schick only scoring one penalty the whole season, on the final day of the season against Mainz. The 29-year-old had a strong partnership with Florian Wirtz last season, with the pair combining a total of eight times, the most in the league. This opens the door for the departure of Victor Boniface in the summer. The 24-year-old was close to leaving in the winter for Saudi Arabia, but the deal collapsed. The Nigerian can leave the club for a fee of around €50m and has attracted interest in the Premier League from Newcastle. GGFN | Jack Meenan

Reviewers Over 50 Love These 30 Products
A teeth-whitening pen that'll be a heck of a lot quicker (and taste a lot better) than those irritating whitening strips that slip and slide all over your teeth. You can use each pen ~20 times and should expect your teeth to lighten four to eight shades. A beloved tightening cream because the 39,000+ reviewers who rated it 5 stars is all the proof you need. It's infused with caffeine, coconut oil, and guarana extract to firm, smooth, and add shimmer to the skin. Plus, the vanilla, salted caramel, and pistachio scent is better than any perfume out there. A pair of compression gloves for giving your joints a comforting (and breathable!) bear hug throughout the day that may help relieve pain caused by arthritis, carpal tunnel, and tendonitis. A pair of moisture-wicking compression socks if you're going on a long-haul flight or preparing for a long road trip. They apply pressure to your legs and feet to help with circulation issues and swollen legs/feet — two common symptoms of sitting for long periods of time. A bleach-free, no-scrub weekly shower spray so soap scum and shower grime buildup goes bye-bye without anyone ever having to bend down or wipe. Rinse it clean the next day, and you'll be amazed to see those hard water stains on your shower door are *poof* gone. A pair of specially designed Wrist Buddy contoured yoga blocks to help you hold a pose or plank with less pressure on your wrist, which may cause less pain and allow you to grip the block better. A Verb hair oil that'll gift your hair with a weightless blend of moringa seed oil, bamboo extract, and argan oil that simultaneously moisturizes, strengthens, and adds shine while leaving behind a light, fresh scent (because no one needs to know this is third-day hair). A standing weeder because the worst part of gardening is kneeling for hours plucking weeds. My back hurts just thinking about it! Thankfully, this tool has three steel claws that grip weeds and roots so you can pull them out while standing. A breast pillow for those who want a little bit more support at night. This is especially great for side sleepers and according to reviewers, those who are pregnant or healing post-surgery too. A facial hair trimmer if you're tired of plucking your unibrow or mustache and would rather reach for an electric option that's painless and fast. Or a pack of Schick dermaplaning razors so you can evict stray hairs and gently exfoliate. These itty bitty razors are great for stashing in your purse for touch-ups on the go. A nail concealer to subtly hide yellowing and staining on your nails. A grape cutter that'll give you peace of mind and soooo much time back now that you don't need to quarter grapes for your grandkid by hand. Reviewers rave that it's also quite a timesaver when used to slice olives and grape/cherry tomatoes. And for your larger chopping needs, a reviewer-beloved veggie chopper because you've got pounds of produce in your fridge just waiting to be prepped for dinner and absolutely zero desire to spend more than five minutes chopping it all. No more tears because the recipe calls for diced onions! A moisturizing hair treatment for a quick burst of hydration. In just eight seconds — eight! — it starts working to leave your mane feeling silkier, softer, and smoother after washing. K18, a leave-in reparative treatment if you put your hair through the wringer. It's fan-flipping-tastic at restoring moisture and softness in your strands if you frequently bleach or chemically treat your hair or if you use heat-styling tools often. A pair of open-toed sandals so vacations and even just trips to the grocery store are a pain-free affair. You've lived long enough to know that if it doesn't have arch support, you don't want it! A set of kegel weights to not only help with incontinence but also potentially make sex easier, less painful, and more enjoyable. These are especially great for people who've just given birth, though anyone can benefit from strengthening their pelvic floor muscles. A "flossing toothbrush" with two types of bristles: flossing bristles that are 10 times thinner for really getting into the grooves between your teeth and regular firm bristles that are designed to last longer than the nylon bristles your current toothbrush probably has. Reviewers say it's gentle yet effective, even on sensitive teeth! A pair of super-soft, ultra-stretchy, and oh-so-cozy Levi's pull-on skinny jeans because some days you want the look of real denim but not the constricting feel. A bottle of professional-grade callus-removing gel for dissolving hard, dead skin in literal minutes. (Seriously, reviewers say you should only let it sit for two to three minutes!) Then, give it a good scrub with a foot file, and your heels will be baby-bottom smooth. Embryolisse, a cult-favorite French moisturizing cream, if you love getting your money's worth. It's designed to hydrate, protect, soothe, and nourish your skin. (It's been with you after all these years, so give it the pampering it deserves.) Makeup artists also use it as a primer, so consider this a 2-for-1 value purchase. An anti-humidity spray so you can give humidity a metaphorical middle finger. This spray creates a waterproof coat around your hair that blocks out moisture (which eventually leads to frizziness). As if that wasn't already magical enough, this effect lasts up to 72 hours or through two to three shampoos! A discreet gnat trap to nab all the flying pests that are currently invading your kitchen without advertising to every house guest that, yes, you do indeed have a fruit fly infestation. Some washing machine cleaning tablets that'll clean and freshen the inside while dissolving residue because you keep your washing machine open when it's not in use, yet it still smells moldy. What gives? A tub of brightening, firming, and rejuvenating eye cream because puffy under-eyes can strike at any age! A set of earplugs for two very stressful experiences that are oh so common (and so annoying!) when flying: harsh noises and your ears popping. Inside these funny-shaped blue earplugs is a small ceramic filter designed to slow the shift in air pressure so there's less stress on the eardrum. They'll also help drown out the sounds of loud talkers, babies crying, and your seat neighbor refusing to wear headphones while they watch a TV show on their phone. A mattress lifter if you're sick of straining your back, propping your mattress awkwardly on your knee or shoulder, or calling in backup when it's time to make the bed. This tool will elevate your very heavy mattress so you can more easily tuck in the sheets. A set of two cooling pillows so you don't make any hot-headed *not* buying them. Inside is a plush gel fiber that provides the ideal level of support to back, stomach, and side sleepers. And they're machine washable as well as stain- and fade-resistant. A Trtl travel pillow to cushion your neck and keep it upright — which is the best position to prevent neck pain. Plus, your neighbors will silently thank you because it means you're not flopping your head from side to side and onto their shoulders.

Two other children were also injured in the accident involving the family which runs the stud where Aidan O'Brien stars Auguste Rodin, Paddington and Circus Maximus are on the stallion roster Tragedy has struck one of New Zealand's best known racing families following a vehicle crash in which a 10-year-old boy lost his life and his father was critically injured. The Schick family own one of the top studs in the southern hemisphere, Windsor Park Stud in Waikato, where the enviable stallion roster includes the ex-Aidan O'Brien stars Auguste Rodin, Paddington and Circus Maximus. But the community has been left shattered by the death of Jimmy Schick, 10, in an horrific off-road accident on Sunday, in which dad Rodney Schick, other son Oli, 12, and another child were injured. On Tuesday, Windsor Park Stud posted a statement on its Facebook page which read: 'In incredibly sad circumstances, the family kindly asks for privacy as they come to terms with the devastating loss of their dearly loved Jimmy. 'Rodney is receiving the best possible care from the dedicated team in the Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital and further updates will be shared as information becomes available. "He is in a stable condition with a long recovery expected. Oli is recovering well with support from the amazing team in the children's ward." It is believed the group were on a hunting trip in a six-seater All-Terrain Vehicle in a remote area of the Schick's land when it rolled over. Police later confirmed that Jimmy Schick had died in the accident while Rodney Schick had to be winched out of the wreckage before he and the two other children were flown by helicopter to hospital in Waikato. Their condition was described as stable. A statement posted on the Windsor Park Stud X account added: 'The Schick family and Windsor Park team express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of love, support and concern during this most difficult of times. 'We appreciate everything that has been provided and sent to the family - we are well supported and catered for at this stage. 'Thank you for your understanding and support."
