Kemp praises opening of Atlanta training center after years of protest, opposition
Atlanta police and other city officials cut the ribbon Tuesday on the new Atlanta Public Safety Training Center after years of opposition and protests slowing down construction. The law enforcement hub is in the South River Forest between Constitution and Key roads in southeast Atlanta. It includes several buildings for training scenarios that may involve, for instance, a house, a daycare or convenience store. And while it may be a city training, Gov. Brian Kemp told Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne on Tuesday that his resolve to help finish the center strengthened after a state trooper was wounded and an activist was killed in return fire. 'One reason the day is so fulfilling is to show people that we did not buckle, we did not, you know, lay down in the face of all those threats that we stood up and said you're not going to do this to us, you're now going to this to the city of Atlanta, you not going do it to the state of Georgia,' Kemp said. The state had a moral stake in the completion of a new state-of-the-art public safety training center for the city of Atlanta in the face of sometimes peaceful, sometimes violent opposition, Kemp told Winne. 'It's certainly a city project, but we had a stake in it because public safety cuts across all political boundaries, is just the right thing to do. It's our really supreme duty, I think, as elected officials, whether you're the governor, whether you are the mayor. We have worked together on that issue,' Kemp said. As arsons, vandalism and other alleged acts of domestic terrorism stacked up, Kemp said he supported the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stepping in to lead a multi-agency investigation. 'I not only supported, but was pushing them, pushing the state patrol, pushing and supporting the locals to be forceful against, as the Chief Schierbaum talked about the Antifa demonstrators,' Kemp said. 'That literally were burning private sector people's equipment, terrorizing their homes, public threats and private threats,' Kemp said. Defense attorney Malcolm Conner represents one of 61 people charged in a domestic terrorism indictment tied to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. 'We can't associate the acts of a few people to everyone else, OK,' Conner said. His client has pleaded not guilty. 'Many people who exercise their constitutional rights to protest are now facing criminal charges,' Conner told Winne. Kemp indicated he pushed for the Georgia State Patrol to assist the city in securing the construction site when needed. The governor indicated his resolve was strengthened after a state trooper was wounded in an operation in the area and activist Manuel Teran was killed by return fire. 'One of our officers were shot, and it was by the grace of God that we had paramedics on scene that saved his life and got him to Grady quickly. But he'll deal with that injury for the of his career and life,' Kemp said. 'Do I believe this training facility is necessary? No, but I do believe cops need better training,' Conner said. 'We've seen some things that shouldn't be happening in law enforcement and people need to be trained on how to deal with those types of situations and to make sure we know how to do with different kinds of people. That's what these training centers are for,' Kemp said. Conner said the domestic terrorism indictment right now constitutes simply allegations.

Switzerland's Hero Group names new CEO
Swiss food company Hero Group has promoted chief business officer Christian Schierbaum to the position of CEO. Schierbaum will succeed Rob Versloot, who is stepping down after over 12 years at the helm of the company behind brands such as Schwartau, Semper and Freche Freunde. In a statement, Hero said the group had been 'very successfully transformed' during Versloot's tenure from a decentralised holding into 'integrated, focused, and fast-growing' company. Versloot said: 'After having grown the company consistently at double-digit pace in the last three years, and having taken measures to future-proof the company, Hero is now on very solid foundations and well positioned for the future.' Schierbaum joined Lenzburg-headquartered Hero in 2019 as chief marketing officer and took on broader responsibilities as chief business officer three years later. He has over 20 years of experience in the FMCG sector, having held senior positions at Wella, Reckitt Benckiser and Mondelēz International across Europe. Schierbaum, who will become Hero CEO on 1 June, said: 'We can now take the next step in the future of Hero, which will have a more-focused approach to snacking while continuing to grow the entire portfolio.' In 2024, Hero consolidated its jam production in Spain, sold production sites in Switzerland and Sweden, and divested its Nordic gluten-free business to Dr. Schär. It also acquired UK-based healthy food brand Deliciously Ella to 'help supercharge sales' in the UK and other markets. In 2024, Hero's net sales rose 2.6% to SFr1.25bn ($1.51bn), while its gross margin improved to 32.1% from 31% in 2023. Hero's operating profit grew by approximately 134.7% in 2024 to SFr54.7m. Net income for the year increased by approximately 231.3% to SFr36.5m. Announcing the results in March, Versloot said: 'We believe the company is now on a stronger footing thanks to difficult decisions we took at the right time on our transformation and strategy moving forward.' APD chief recommits to transparency with Atlanta Citizen Review Board investigations
At a recent meeting of the Atlanta Citizen Review Board, which examines allegations of abuse by members of the Atlanta Police Department, Chief Darin Schierbaum reiterated his commitment to transparency, saying he had to be able to hold himself responsible for the department. 'There's no guessing game. I've got to be able to hold myself accountable. I have to be able to hold more of the department accountable,' Schierbaum said on April 11, while discussing reviews by the ACRB. During an extensive question and answer session with members of the board, Schierbaum said they should be able to 'expect promise and transparency from our offices.' [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Members of the ACRB asked Schierbaum about his philosophy on officer discipline. Answering, Schierbaum said that everyone there knows that 'not anyone should wear the uniform,' saying that for every 5,000 applications to join the Atlanta Police Department, only 100 get to the training center, and on average, only 70 will graduate. He said his goal is to be able to address discipline and maintain public trust through their training. As far as disciplinary actions within APD and recommendations by ACRB after an investigation, 'We know if we look statistically, the agreement rate between the department's investigating process and the ACRB, if there's been a violation, is very high.' The review board also acknowledged how difficult officers' jobs are, saying it was important to ensure a situation is handled correctly, but that officers who do their jobs the right way should be complimented, 'because that doesn't happen enough either. It's not an easy job, and there can be a lot of challenges in different ways.' However, in the same vein, the board member said it was important to address perceptions of bad attitudes of officers when they interact with the public. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
