Schnucks rolls out more Caper Carts, diverse-owned business products
You can find original article here Supermarketnews. Subscribe to our free daily Supermarketnews newsletter. Schnucks is rolling out more Instacart Caper Carts in its Missouri stores and will debut the technology at locations in Illinois. The carts also feature a lower tray, allowing shoppers to add heavier items such as cases of water or pet food. Caper Carts, introduced at Schnucks stores in 2024, are equipped with artificial intelligence, cameras, and a built-in scale so shoppers can scan items as they shop. The carts also alert customers to promotions and discounts while they shop. The St. Louis-based grocer is also adding products to store shelves from the company's first class of the Schnucks Springboard local and diverse-owned business accelerator. Participating companies receive a four-week trial on end caps at 15 Schnucks stores, which will also host sampling events. The purpose of Schnucks Springboard is to provide education, resources and access to local and diverse-owned businesses. Companies were selected in partnership with the Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council based on their stability, incremental sales opportunity, strategic vision, and corporate responsibility, according to Schnucks. In addition to the in-store trial, company owners also received development classes, networking opportunities, and $5,000 in equity-free funding. After the four-week trial, Schnucks category managers will evaluate customer demand and sales of the accelerator products to determine whether the items will become part of the stores' everyday offerings. The first 10 participants were named last summer, and in March, Schnucks accepted applications for its 2025 Springboard cohort, which will be announced at a later date. ** Join us at Grocery NEXT, September 10-12 at the Westin Chicago Northwest in Itasca, Ill., where industry leaders will explore the future of grocery technology, AI, automation and evolving consumer trends.
