Stotesbury Cup Regatta races canceled Saturday due to high waters

Races for the 98th annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta have been canceled Saturday due to high waters on the Schuylkill River following Friday's heavy rain and storms, officials tell CBS News Philadelphia. This move affects over 4,000 athletes, some from as far away as Canada who made the trek to Philadelphia to compete. The rainy weather and high river conditions canceled practice on Thursday as well. This is a developing story and will be updated.

98th Stotesbury Cup Regatta making waves on Schuylkill River, severe weather temporarily halted races

But severe weather temporarily halted the action on the water. "We're excited. It's a big race for us today. We trained all season," said senior Jack Wescott. The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is a ballet of strength and rhythm on the Schuylkill River. Steeped in tradition for nearly a century. "It's always an experience at Stotesbury. It's the largest regatta in the world and that's what makes it special. We got crews from all over," said John Musial, head coach of Villa Joseph Marie High School. Over 4,000 athletes and more than 160 crew teams from across the country, including international teams, compete for glory. "This is the last finale and we're very excited, you know," said Wescott. "End of a lot of our careers here." This dance was interrupted by Mother Nature. "I just had a boat race, so they're good, but I have a few more to go this afternoon, so will be in a delay and it could affect the schedule for tomorrow," said Musial. Lightning shut down the competition Friday morning. Teams and spectators gathered underneath tents, waiting out the storm. "The guys that are here waiting to race are upstairs, just staying loose, and I messaged our team that is racing later in the day to hang out at home and wait for the call to come down here," said John Fife, head coach of St. Joe's Prep. Teams remained focused as the storms quickly passed. "We can race anytime, any weather, we're ready to go," said Wescott. Focused on making their mark on Stotesbury. This is such a big deal for these teams, especially for the seniors. Organizers said the storms pushed back the competition about three hours.

Bucks County's Holy Ghost Prep crew team ready for Stotesbury Cup Regatta

In their 10th year, Holy Ghost Prep crew team is prepared for 98th Stotesbury Cup Regatta In their 10th year, Holy Ghost Prep crew team is prepared for 98th Stotesbury Cup Regatta In their 10th year, Holy Ghost Prep crew team is prepared for 98th Stotesbury Cup Regatta When you consider the age of the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the Holy Ghost Prep crew team is relatively new. The team was formed 10 years ago and is ready to compete in the 98th annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta, presented by Toyota. The oldest and largest high school rowing meet in the country takes over the Schuylkill River this year. "Everything is locked and ready to go," said Patrick Phillips, the crew team's coxswain and a junior at Holy Ghost. It's a dance of strength and grace where muscle and harmony drive the boat forward. As coxswain, Phillips is responsible for keeping his crew in sync on the water. "Kind of the brains of the boat. Rowers, while they're in their seats, cannot see where they're going," Phillips said. "I'm laying down, eyes looking straight. I need to multitask by creating a rhythm in the boat." As a freshman, Phillips wanted to play soccer until his current head coach, Allison Boehm, introduced him to the sport. "I wanted to play soccer and I couldn't because I had a cast on, and she walked up to me and said, 'Would you like to be a coxswain?'" said Phillips. Boehm has coached the team for six out of its 10 seasons. "It's not exactly common for a female to be the head coach of an all-boys school. When I got the job at Holy Ghost, I was really excited, because this is my dad's high school," she said. At Stotesbury, Holy Ghost will race in the Boys' junior and senior 4 and a second senior 4. "As a senior, it's my last year—my last shot at the Stotesbury," senior and team captain Anthony Marrero said. He and Phillips are like bookends on the water: Phillips calling out commands while Marrero sets the rhythm and stroke rate. "I can always trust him," Marrero said. "I can always know he's steering us in the best line, giving us the best calls. So I have a pretty close relationship with him." They're hoping the team can make its mark at Stotes and bring home a medal. "The goal is always to make it. Always to win and get that medal and leave a legacy for the rest of the underclassmen here," Marrero said. "We're in this together," Phillips said. "Blood, sweat and tears and the amount of practices we put into this." Boehm believes her team has a chance. "We're definitely a smaller school and smaller crew, so we're really optimistic. So hopefully we get some hardware," she said.

Athletes, coaches prepare for Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia

The 98th Stotesbury Cup Regatta is back along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia this weekend. Thousands of athletes are in town ahead of the competition starting Friday morning. Officials say more than 4,700 athletes are expected to compete over the next two days. Mother Nature, though, isn't exactly cooperating. CBS News Philadelphia River conditions canceled practice Thursday. Still, that didn't stop teams from 11 states and Canada from coming to set up and get in a workout. "We'll deal with the conditions and try to row the best race. I think we've prepared a lot leading up to this. It takes all year. We don't have any doubts these guys are prepared to race," Eli Brown, Jesuit Dallas' head coach, said. Officials are confident Friday's competition will go on as planned even with the forecast.

Train derailment closes Pottstown street for hours

A derailment of four cars on a freight train Friday night in Pottstown closed the railroad tracks along the Schuylkill River, as well as a section of Industrial Highway, well into Saturday afternoon. Pottstown Fire Department was dispatched about 8 p.m. Friday to the area of South Hanover Street and College Drive/Industrial Highway. As Norfolk Southern Railroad crews worked to rerail the affected railcars, one car containing butyl acrylate disconnected from recovery equipment and traveled down an embankment, Norfolk Southern said in a statement. 'There are no reports of injuries or leaks, and our teams are working closely with local first responders and the Department of Environmental Protection to remove the car,' the statement said early Saturday afternoon. 'We ask that the public please keep away from the area while this work continues.' Pottstown Fire Chief Frank Hand said fire department personnel monitored the scene throughout the night and Saturday morning. Norfolk Southern Railroad brought in a crane and other heavy equipment. Industrial Highway remained closed between South Hanover and South Washington streets throughout the recovery operation. As of early afternoon, Norfolk Southern crews were in the process of pumping the contents of the tanker that capsized into another tanker so it can be removed. Hand said the material wasn't believed to be of a volatile nature and stressed there is no danger to the surrounding community. Butyl acrylate, a liquid organic compound, is widely used as a building block in the production of various polymers used in the manufacture of paints, coatings, adhesives, textiles, and plastics.
