David Schwimmer talks fame and why he couldn't stand the ‘Friends' theme tune
'Friends' star David Schwimmer has opened up about fame and the impact the show's huge success had on him, revealing that he struggled to listen to the theme tune for a while as he 'just had heard it so many times.' Schwimmer discussed his dislike of 'I'll Be There For You' by The Rembrandts during an appearance on the 'Making a Scene' podcast, hosted by British comedians Matt Lucas and David Walliams. 'I'll be really honest, there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really… uggh,' said Schwimmer in the episode earlier this week. 'You know what I mean? I just had that reaction. I just had heard it so many times,' he added. 'Any time you'd go on a show or a talkshow or an interview, that would be your intro song. So I just didn't have the greatest response to it for a period of time,' said Schwimmer. Schwimmer portrayed Ross Geller in the hit comedy, which spanned 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 and also starred Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and the late Matthew Perry. Schwimmer also spoke about his struggles with fame, recalling how the last time he was able to appear in public without attracting attention was in 1994. 'Jim Burrows ('Friends' director) took the cast to Vegas… this was before we were on the air or anything,' he said. 'We were walking through the casino at one point, and he said to us, 'remember this moment, it's the last time you're going to be able to walk through a casino like this' – basically, with total anonymity,' said Schwimmer. He went on to recount one incident that hammered home Burrows' point. 'The moment that I realised Jim Burrows was right, I was at LAX and I was trying to catch a flight. I'm not one of those actors that has an entourage with me. It's me, that's it. I just go solo,' said Schwimmer. 'I'm going through LAX trying to find my flight, I hear a blood-curdling scream. I was genuinely frightened. I thought someone was being stabbed or something,' he said. 'And a group of girls come and like just accost me… literally just scream and grab me,' added Schwimmer. 'And they won't let me go… I mean, it was terrifying.' 'It took me a long time to get adjusted to that kind of fame,' added Schwimmer. 'At that time you had three cars following you everywhere you went… staked outside your house. You had absolutely no privacy, ever.' Schwimmer also told Lucas and Walliams how his relationship with 'Friends' and its theme tune has evolved over the years, particularly after his child started watching the show, aged about nine. 'I'd be making breakfast or whatever, and I'd hear my kid's laughter,' he said. 'My whole relationship to that song and to the show changed again.'

David Schwimmer shares how daughter made him reassess his relationship with Friends
David Schwimmer has shared how his daughter has made him reassess his relationship with Friends. Schwimmer, 58, starred as goofy paleontologist Ross Gellar alongside actors CourtEney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry in the Emmy-winning sitcom that ran from 1994 to 2004. Speaking to David Walliams and Matt Lucas on their podcast Making A Scene, Schwimmer revealed that, after the series wrapped in 2004, he never watched the show back and developed a negative response to hearing the show's theme tune 'I'll Be There For You' by The Rembrandts. 'I never watched the show after we finished it. For me, it's like, I did it, I'm moving on. I don't go back,' he said. 'I'll be really was a time for quite a while where just hearing the theme song would really… uhhhh,' he said, sighing. 'I just had that reaction. I had just heard it so many times.' 'Any time you would go on a talk show or interview, that would be your intro song. I didn't have the greatest response to it for a period of time.' However, when Schwimmer's daughter Cleo turned nine and began watching Friends on her own accord, Schwimmer said it shifted his outlook on the show. 'And then, at about aged nine, my kid discovered it and started watching it. And I'd be making breakfast or whatever and I'd hear my kid's laughter,' he said. 'My whole relationship to that song, and to the show, changed again.' Schwimmer shares 11-year-old Cleo with his ex-wife Zoë Buckman, whom he met in 2007 and married three years later. The pair announced their separation in 2017. Reflecting on the decade working on Friends, Schwimmer said it was an 'incredible life changing chapter' but he was ready to move on. 'There was a part of me that was ready for the next chapter. It came to a natural end and maybe even overstated its welcome a little bit,' he said. Speaking about his time working on the early episodes of the series, Schwimmer recalled the entire cast being taken to Vegas by the show's director James Burrows and being warned that it would be the last time they could be in public with pure anonymity. 'It was true. It aired in the fall and it became an instant hit,' said Shwimmer. Remembering the moment he realised Burrows was right, Schwimmer said he was catching a flight from Los Angeles airport when he was 'accosted' by a group of female fans. 'I was at LAX and I was trying to catch a flight. I'm trying to find my flight and I hear a blood curdling scream. I was genuinely frightened. I thought someone was being stabbed. And a group of girls just come and accosted me.' He continued: 'They literally just screamed and grabbed me and they won't let me go. And I had to extricate myself. And it was terrifying. It took me a while to get adjusted to fame.' 'I'm so glad it's no longer the case. At the time, you had three cars following you everywhere you went, outside your house. You had no privacy ever.'

London Stock Exchange sees market bouncing back
The chief executive of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) said most firms that switch their listings from the UK to US struggle to boost their share price. With London grappling with a number of firms departing, the Group's CEO, David Schwimmer, ruled out offloading its flagship bourse as he insisted the market is bouncing back. Speaking after LSEG's annual results, Schwimer said he would not sell or spin off the LSE, and that it is a 'core part' of LSEG's strategy. Since joining from Goldman Sachs in 2018, Schwimmer has overseen LSEG's transformation into a data and analytics powerhouse. The firm acquired Refinitiv for $27bn in 2021 and entered into a 10-year strategic partnership with Microsoft the following year. Data and analytics now comprise roughly half of LSEG's revenue, compared with less than three per cent from equities. That has given rise to speculation over the future of the 223-year-old LSE, which has been hit by heavy outflows from UK stock funds, a dearth of IPOs and large firms seeking overseas listings. Schwimmer told reporters that LSEG's trading platforms create 'a virtuous circle' within the wider group's strategy, which is 'to provide a financial markets infrastructure and data ecosystem across the trade life cycle, across asset classes and on a global basis.' 'If you are trading on our execution venues, you are creating data,' he said. 'We provide that data to the market. The market uses that data to make decisions around more trading.' Schwimmer said the LSE is therefore 'absolutely core to our strategy, core to our business and core to our brand' and that he is 'very, very happy to have that business'. Stephen Yiu, a well-known retail manager building a stake in LSEG, said earlier this year that the firm should offload the London Stock Exchange and rebrand to reflect its transformation. He named Euronext and Deutsche Borse as potential bidders. Following the worst year for London IPOs since the financial crisis, Schwimmer reiterated his positive outlook for listings. 'I still feel very comfortable about the pipeline, and we can see a number of companies that are in preparation mode and evaluating their plans,' he said. 'The market continues to be fairly subdued for IPOs on a global basis.' Schwimmer added that London remains one of the world's largest markets by capital raised when including follow-on offerings. 'This is a very healthy market, plentiful liquidity, lots of activity,' he said. The government has hurried to revamp the regularity rule book in the hope of making London a more attractive IPO venue, including an overhaul of listings rules last summer and plans for a private stock market called Pisces. Schwimmer said: 'When you look at the facts, you look at the strength of the London market in terms of the broader capital raising, you look at the reforms and innovations that are coming to this market, I feel very good and very confident about the direction of travel. LSEG's annual earnings slightly surpassed analysts' estimates, with capital markets revenue soaring thanks to a strong performance from its Tradeweb platform for fixed income derivates. LSEG said it has a 'strong pipeline' of new products under development with Microsoft as the firm's annual earnings met expectations. In its results statement, LSEG said its first products co-developed with the US giant are now generally available to customers and that it was preparing for 'increased customer adoption' this year. In 2022, LSEG entered a 10-year strategic partnership with Microsoft – a move that saw it take a 4 per cent stake in the FTSE 100 group. Schwimmer said it had 'reached an important milestone' in the partnership and that there was 'a strong pipeline for 2025.' The writer is our foreign correspondent based in the UK

David Schwimmer calls out Hollywood ‘heroes' for staying silent on antisemitism
David Schwimmer has called out his Hollywood peers for not speaking up about antisemitism. The Friends star, 58, spoke at the Anti-Defamation League 's Never is Now conference in New York City earlier this week where he pleaded with his fellow celebrities and 'heroes' to publicly call out hate speech. 'Plenty of people I respect, even some of my heroes in entertainment, music and sports, have chosen to keep a low profile and sit this one out, including some whose careers have been made by leaning into their Jewish identity, and others who have won acclaim for playing Jews on screen,' he said. 'Some of them are doing a lot behind the scenes, privately and in their own way, but so many have chosen not to say anything publicly at all.' Schwimmer continued: 'And if I can say something directly to them: I really wish you would.' Addressing the stars directly, the actor said: 'I wish you would stand up. I wish you would speak out, because your voice would be so meaningful to your fans who love you, to your community members who need you, to folks who can use just a little solidarity right now. 'No one's asking you to solve the conflict of the Middle East. Just say that you stand with your Jewish friends, colleagues, and neighbours against hatred and what's happening on our college campuses and in our schools and to Jewish-owned businesses is totally unacceptable.' Schwimmer's speech comes a month after he called on Elon Musk to ban Kanye West, from X over his 'hate-filled, ignorant' antisemitic rant in February. The actor pointed to a number of posts by the rapper in a followers on Instagram. Hennessy.' 'This is so 2022,' said Schwimmer in response. 'We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate-filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr Musk.' 'His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews,' the actor said. 'I don't know what's worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point.' 'Silence is complicity,' he concluded. X did not respond to The Independent' s request for comment at the time. Schwimmer was not the only one to call out the SpaceX CEO last month. Broadcaster Piers Morgan also addressed the Tesla founder, writing: 'Hey @elonmusk – how much more disgustingly hateful, racist, antisemitic, violence-inducing stuff from Kanye are you going to allow him to spew on your platform to his 32 million followers?' In January, the ADL came under fire for defending Musk after the tech billionaire appeared to make a Nazi salute at an inauguration rally for US president Donald Trump. In a social media post, the ADL dismissed Musk's raised arm as an 'awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm'. Days after, however, the ADL did call out the tech CEO for making light of the Holocaust with a series of Nazi 'jokes'. Musk had mocked the controversy over his salute with a series of quips on X featuring word play with the names of some of Adolf Hitler's leading Nazis, including Rudolph Hess, Joseph Goebels, Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler, who played key roles in killing six million Jews.
