Harrisburg School District demotes SciTech principal, family reacts
HARRISBURG, Pa (WHTM) — Emotions have been high since the Harrisburg school district announced they were looking to replace Dr. Achampong — also known as Dr. A — as Principal of the SciTech campus. 'The amount of disrespect for a seasoned principal who has spent over 20 years in this district, has graduated from this district and has spent 13 years as a principal at SciTech a school that she helped found is astonishing and completely disrespectful to not only her, but to this family and everything that she has gone through,' said Casaya Achampong, Dr. A's youngest daughter after Tuesday's school board meeting. According to a statement from the school district, Dr. A's principal certification had expired, and they had no choice but to let her go or they'd face fines. Dr. A released a statement in response to the school districts — a SciTech student read it aloud during public comment at the board meeting. 'I do accept responsibility for not being fully aware of where my certifications stood,' the student read. 'However, the statements the Harrisburg school district put out are not completely accurate.' Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Even with all the backlash — the board went ahead and approved demoting Dr. A. 'She made that school what it is today,' said Dr. A's sister, Laurie Stroble. 'Why are you going to demote her? What is behind all this? Like one time you wanted her to do both schools, and she has done, you know, even when she felt her at her worst, she was still rise up for the occasion.' According to a letter Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Henry released Monday night — Dr. A will remain in the school district, 'as an English teacher at John Harris high school, a role which she holds a valid, active certificate'. Her family is not happy with this news — especially as she continues to battle cancer. 'She was forced to take that position, as everyone knows she's battling stage three breast cancer,' Casaya added. 'And one of the things that the school district provides for her is health insurance in order to keep her health insurance and to continue battling this very dangerous and very deadly disease, she had to take that position. I'm going to continue to fight for my mom. Community members are continuing to fight for my mom. And I'm going to continue to speak the truth no matter how much this district continues to speak lies.' One school board member did thank Dr. A for her time and service as SciTech's principal.
