Young minds meet big ideas at the 10th annual Mini Maker Faire

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Science Center of Iowa kicked off its 10th annual Mini Maker Faire on Saturday. Different tinkers from all over Iowa, including engineers, artists, scientists, and crafters, are showcasing their projects, hobbies, and inventions during the 10th annual faire. The event started at 9 a.m. and will go until 4 p.m. There will be food trucks outside of the Science Center. 'It's an amazing thing to be the center of the showcase to how Iowans can be creative and we love to share that with visitors,' said Jolie Pelds, the Director of Innovative STEM Teaching at the Science Center of Iowa. Brett Trout, the owner and designer of Glib Games, is one of the makers at the faire. He is showcasing his new board game, The Best Medicine, and he is teaching audiences how to create their own games. Troy Powers of Powerful Innovations is another maker at the faire. He was inspired by Sci-Fi movies to create gadgets showcased in the films. He is Iowa's real-life Tony Stark, and will even wear his own Iron Man suit that he created. The most enthralling part of seeing his designs is that they all work, from the lasers and sci-fi suits to the arm cannons and flame throwers. Powers is telling audiences about the work that he puts into bringing these fictional ideas to life. 'When I was young, it wasn't real. So, the only way you can have it is to build it yourself,' he said. The Japan America Society of Iowa is also showcasing origami at the Mini Maker Faire. Yoko Tanaka is the Executive Director of the organization. She said origami is a toy, an art, and and a science. She's teaching kids how to make penguins, foxes, horses, and more. The Science Center of Iowa is located at 401 W Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway in Des Moines. Tickets are $17 for children and adults, and $15 for seniors. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
