Project SEARCH seniors graduate from internship

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Five Science Hill High School (SHHS) seniors graduated from their yearlong Project SEARCH internship on Wednesday. Project SEARCH is designed for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program provides job/soft skills training through workplace immersion and personalized job-search assistance. It is the only program of its kind in the region. Allecia Frizzell, the SHHS supervisor of special education, stated that the program involves ten months of 'intense' learning. Science Hill students complete yearlong Project SEARCH internship 'So, the students come on campus every day,' she said. 'They start their day in the classroom setting, learning specific pre-employment skills necessary to be successful in employment. And then they have on-the-job training for the remainder of the day, which really mimics a day in the life of someone who is employed by Johnson City Medical Center. And so they are responsible for specific job skills, but there's someone there that we're able to provide in order for them to receive structured coaching, through those while they're learning those new skills.' Frizzell said SHHS hopes to enroll six to eight students in Project SEARCH annually. The seniors signed up to enter the workforce on Monday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
