Renowned Mayo musician Tom Doherty honoured by acclaimed Scoil Acla music school
A native of Foxford, Mr Doherty is celebrated throughout Ireland as an exceptional accordion player.
Born into a musical family, Mr Doherty began learning the accordion at just four years old under the tutelage of Martin Donoghue.
He won his first All-Ireland title on the concertina and later earning an All-Ireland on the melodeon. Mr Doherty has enjoyed a decades-long career and has toured extensively across Ireland, Europe and the US. He has featured in numerous television and audio recordings during his career.
Mr Doherty is a full-time professional musician, sound engineer and music teacher and is musical director of the junior and teenage performance group 'Glór na Sí'.
'I'm honoured to be named Artist in Residence at Scoil Acla 2025,' said Mr Doherty.
'This summer school has played a huge part in my life since John 'Twin' McNamara first invited me to teach here back in 1987. Over nearly four decades, I've shared unforgettable weeks on Achill and had the privilege of teaching alongside some of the finest musicians and tutors in the country.'
This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the revival of Scoil Acla, which draws numerous talented traditional Irish musicians to Achill every year.

Scoil Samhraidh Scoil Acla 2025 takes place from July 27 to August 2. It will offer classes, concerts, recitals, competitions, workshops and music sessions for all ages and abilities.
