Work to shore up the structure housing the former Engine No. 5 House in preparation of construction began this week at the site — 132 years after it opened in 1893 at 109 Hillman St. The building had been vacant for years, which led to its deterioration, and was scheduled for demolition by the city. Flights from New Bedford to Logan Airport could soon take off
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Hate Boston traffic and long TSA lines? Soon, South Coast travelers may have a faster way to reach Logan Airport—by flying there from New Bedford. New Bedford Regional Airport officials say one of its tenants has submitted a letter of intent to offer daily flights to Logan, with departures in the morning and afternoon. 'They haven't made their official notice yet, but they are looking to do daily flights to Boston twice a day,' Airport Manager Scot Servis said. Right now, driving is the easiest way to get from New Bedford to Logan. However, the South Coast Rail is set to launch next month, and soon, air travel could be another option. MORE: South Coast Rail service to officially begin March 24 At first, it may seem counterintuitive to take a flight before catching another at Logan, but airport officials say it could significantly cut down travel time by bypassing traffic and security lines. 'The wonderful benefit to that would be to park in New Bedford, clear TSA with only a handful of other passengers, fly to Boston, and you're already past security, so you don't have to deal with Boston traffic or Boston TSA,' Assistant Airport Manager Michael Crane explained. Flights would run year-round, cost around $90–$100, and accommodate 10–15 passengers. 'When you take into account maybe asking for a favor, hiring an Uber, cab, or other means of transportation and parking, that small price to pay to take the flight from New Bedford to Logan kind of equals out,' City Councilor Shawn Oliver said. 'Having the TSA checkpoint also helps us with trying to solicit new airlines and new service, and getting new passengers through the building,' Servis added. Oliver said he looks forward to the new service and expects an official announcement to be made within the next month. 'I know I dread the drive up to Boston some days,' he said. 'You never know if you gave yourself enough time to get through to Logan and through the security checkpoints.'
