Hermeus Flies Quarterhorse Mk 1 at Edwards Air Force Base

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hermeus, a venture capital-backed aerospace and defense technology company specializing in high-speed aircraft, announced today the flight of its Quarterhorse Mk 1 aircraft. This milestone is a significant step in Hermeus' development of high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft. With this flight, Hermeus demonstrated a rapid development pace, advancing Hermeus' mission to operationalize hypersonic technologies. 'Mk 1 has redefined the pace of developing and flying new aircraft,' said Hermeus CEO AJ Piplica. Share 'Mk 1 has redefined the pace of developing and flying new aircraft,' said AJ Piplica, CEO and Co-Founder of Hermeus. 'I'm incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished. We've proven the viability of our iterative development approach. But this is just the start. We have much more to do as the bar rises for the next iteration.' Quarterhorse Mk 1 went from clean sheet to flight-ready in a little over a year. The primary focus of the test campaign was validate high-speed takeoff and landing of a large uncrewed aircraft. The aircraft's unique configuration — driven by high-speed flight — makes basic operations of takeoff and landing distinctly challenging. 'Industry partnerships continue to have an important role in the development and test of disruptive and innovative capabilities for our warfighters,' commented Major General Scott Cain, Commander of Air Force Test Center. 'The promise of routine hypersonic flight is an exciting capability for the joint team.' Data from the campaign has validated design and performance models, including aerodynamics, stability and control. Testing also validated performance of vehicle subsystems including propulsion, fuel systems, hydraulics, power, thermal management, avionics, flight software, telemetry, flight termination and command and control. 'The real-world flight data from Mk 1 provides significant technical value that we're rolling into our next aircraft,' said President and Co-Founder Skyler Shuford. 'Moreover, the team has accomplished this milestone on a challenging timeline while operating within the overall aerospace ecosystem — all to support rebuilding America's lost capability to quickly develop brand-new, full-scale jets.' Quarterhorse Mk 1 is the first in a series of uncrewed aircraft on Hermeus' iterative development roadmap. The approach emphasizes 'hardware richness' – building multiple prototypes in quick succession, allowing the team to take well-managed technical risk. The team is actively reviewing data and integrating lessons learned into Hermeus' next iteration, Quarterhorse Mk 2, currently being manufactured at Hermeus' headquarters in Atlanta. The scale of an F-16, Quarterhorse Mk 2 is a high-Mach aircraft designed to de-risk uncrewed supersonic flight. It is on-track to fly late this year. Hermeus is a venture capital-backed aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate aviation. In the near-term, the business is focused on building high-speed products that sustainably deliver asymmetric advantage to the Department of Defense and allied partners. Utilizing an iterative development approach to aircraft, Hermeus' high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft aim to deliver capabilities at a pace not seen in the U.S. since the 1950s.

Council honor librarians, dispatchers

Members of the Cleburne City Council paid tribute to the city's librarians and dispatchers during their Tuesday meeting. "I encourage all our residents to visit our library to explore its resources," Mayor Scott Cain said. "This reminds me of my first experience, when the library was still at the Layland Building, of getting my library card and being able to spend my summer reading books. I didn't have any idea then that it was going to lead to a lifetime of continued learning, and I still read every day and love every moment of it." The Cleburne Public Library received two mentions during Tuesday's meeting, the first being recognition of having received the 2024 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. Cleburne librarians are no strangers to the award having now won it four years in a row. To be considered for the award, a library must support standards of excellence in 10 categories. "Those include serving the underprivileged, digital literacy and other benchmarks," Library Manager Tina Dunham said. Dunham thanked the council and city administration for their support of the library. "But especially our staff," she said. "They are hard working and go over and above to serve the community and make it a better place." Cain referenced the fact that the library and Cleburne Police Department have shared the same building for decades and both have outgrown that facility. "I look forward to the day we can give you all the resources you need," Cain said. "I can't imagine what you guys can do with state-of-the-art facilities. We look forward to being able to get that for you one day, hopefully in the near future." Cain also proclaimed Sunday through Saturday as National Library Week in Cleburne. "Libraries spark creativity, fuel imagination and inspire lifelong learning," Cain said. "They offer a space where individuals of all ages can explore new ideas and be drawn to new possibilities." Cain, joined by Police Chief Rob Severance and CPD dispatchers, proclaimed Sunday through April 19 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Cleburne. "They are the vital link for police and firefighters through monitoring their activities by radio and providing them quality and accurate information to ensure their safety," Cain said. "Through their diligence and professionalism they keep our residents and our city safe." Cain called the dispatcher's ability to remain compassionate and calm under pressure absolutely amazing. "I think back to the tornadoes that came through in 2013 and all the chaos that went on because of that," Cain said. "These women humbly handled all the 911 calls coming in from the get go. They remained professional and understanding in helping our first responders and helping everyone stay calm."

NH man indicted for forgery, financial exploitation of older adult

Mar. 18—A Kensington man has been indicted on charges of forgery and exploitation of an elderly adult for allegedly signing a man's name to transfer ownership of vehicles without the man's consent. The Attorney General's Office and Kensington Police Chief Scott Cain said Tuesday a Rockingham County Grand Jury has returned indictments charging David Pandelena, 67, of Kensington, with two Class A felony counts of financial exploitation of an elderly adult and three Class B felony counts of forgery. The financial exploitation indictments claim that between June 15 and Aug. 2, 2024, Pandelena acquired possession of vehicles — a Chevy Silverado and Toyota Camry — belonging to an elderly man's trust "under circumstances where Mr. Pandelena knew or disregarded the risk that the elderly man lacked the capacity to consent to the transaction," prosecutors said in a statement. If convicted, Pandelena faces up to 7 1/2 -15 years in the New Hampshire State Prison and a $4,000 fine on each indictment. The forgery indictments claim Pandelena signed the elderly man's name on documents that transferred ownership of his vehicles from his trust, then presented the documents to the Kensington Town Clerk's office. Each forgery indictment alleges an enhanced penalty in that in committing the crimes, Pandelena looked to take advantage of the elderly man's "age or physical or mental disability," the Attorney General's Office said. If convicted, Pandelena faces up to 10-30 years in state prison and a $4,000 fine on each indictment. Pandelena is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment in the Rockingham County Superior Court on April 18, 2025, at 10 a.m.
