Celebrate 10 Years of Perfectly Adorable Pop Culture Art From Scott C
There's no mistaking the artwork of Scott Campbell. It's funny, it's colorful, and even though it can look simple, it still somehow captures a moment of pop culture nostalgia in a few quick brushstrokes. Campbell is best known for his ongoing series called Great Showdowns, which we've previously covered on the site. But, Showdowns are not the only thing he does. He also does large-scale works, creates books, and helps with design concepts—and everything has been building up to one big, epic, mega show, which is happening this weekend. It's fittingly called 'The Big Show' and it opens at 6 p.m. June 7 in New York City. That'll be your first chance to buy originals big and small, prints of several new pieces (including the Steven Spielberg and Hayao Miyazaki pieces below), and more. It'll then remain on display through June 28, with leftovers going online at 1 p.m. ET June 12. Click here for the address, hours, and more. Basically, though, this is a show that celebrates Campbell's entire body of work, which ranges from huge, sweeping pop culture collections to original concepts, book illustrations, and more. 'I have had exhibitions in the past to celebrate my book releases and various other popular culture and conceptual experiences, but I have never had an exhibition that encompasses all of these worlds together before,' Campbell told io9 via email. 'I have accumulated quite a body of work over these past 10 years from various projects and have experienced many life changes from moving to Los Angeles to meeting my wife and starting a wonderful little family. The influences for the stories and ideas for these paintings has evolved over the years along with these experiences. Seeing everything together on these walls is like walking through these experiences again. And with the release of my first graphic novel series in the fall, a project I have been working on since the late 2000s, it felt like the exact right time to reflect on all of this. I find great comfort in all of these worlds and am very glad to be spending time with them again.' Below, we have images of just a few of the over 100 original watercolor paintings, sculptures, prints, books, pins, and more that are in the show. Several of these are new but most pieces have previously been released. They've just never been on display, or for sale, in their original form. Presented by Spoke Art, 'The Big Show' opens at 6 p.m. June 7 at Harman Projects, 210 Rivington St., New York, NY. It'll then remain on display through June 28, with leftovers going online at 1 p.m. EST June 12. Click here for additional information.

USC Upstate defeats High Point 13-9 to reach Big South Tournament title game
HIGH POINT, N.C. (USC Upstate SID) – One game away from putting itself in the driver's seat at the Big South Baseball Championship, USC Upstate baseball advanced itself through the winner's bracket and secured its place in the Big South Tournament Championship Game for the third straight season behind a 13-9 come-from-behind victory Friday afternoon over No. 2 seed High Point. The Spartans, facing their first deficit in the 2025 iteration of the conference championship, displayed their resolve, fighting their way behind a six-run sixth inning. Settling Upstate, sophomore right-handed pitcher Cooper Ellingworth proved crucial in setting up the comeback as he limited the Panthers to three hits and two runs over 5.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, a career-long outing. He struck out six, tying a career-high as he earned his first win of the season. Following a one-out double from redshirt junior Alex Ritzer, Upstate forced High Point into its bullpen, a decision the Spartans took advantage of. Against the first Panther reliever, Upstate loaded the bases behind a walk and HBP before redshirt junior rightfielder Scott Campbell and junior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney notched back-to-back RBI with a single to center and walk, respectively. Facing a new High Point arm, redshirt sophomore centerfielder Scott Newman lifted a sac fly before consecutive doubles, a two-run two-bagger from junior catcher Preston Lucas and an infield double from junior second baseman Gage Griggs closed the inning's six-spot. The Spartans' six-run frame proved its largest, delivering it the lead for the first and final time, but the team showed its fight all game long, including erasing a four-run deficit in the first inning, matching High Point to begin the game anew in the second frame. Upstate, upon taking the lead, twice answered Panther runs with a tally in the subsequent half inning, doing so with a solo shot from redshirt freshman Henry Zenor and an RBI triple from Lucas. Huge demand for new Open Farm Sunday event in Aberdeenshire
Kirkton Farm, near Kinellar, Aberdeenshire, will welcome as many as 1,000 visitors when it opens its gates to the public for the first time on Sunday June 8. Host farmer Scott Campbell was thrilled to see more than 800 registrations pour in. That meant the event was fully booked. But after an on-site meeting, it's now been decided to increase the limit to 1,000 people. Joining the Open Farm Sunday (OFS) initiative marks a first for Scott and his team. Organised by Linking Environment and Farming, or Leaf, OFS offers people throughout the UK the chance to explore where their food comes from. They can discover how it's produced and meet some of the people at the heart of it all – the farmers. Entry is free, with a packed day of activities planned at each participating farm. At Kirkton, visitors can take a tractor and trailer tour, stopping along the way to watch a sheepdog demonstration, see the cows, and identify different cereal and vegetable crops. The machinery shed will have a display of tractors from through-the-ages, while youngsters can also enjoy hands-on play in a giant sandpit. The Willis family of Forest Farm Dairy at Kinellar will bring some of their dairy calves. They'll also have some of their popular homemade gelato for people to buy. Meanwhile, the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative's 'countryside classroom on wheels' will offer educational experiences that bring the whole world of farming to life. Members of Inverurie and District Young Farmers Club will also be on hand to talk about their involvement in the agricultural community and what the club has to offer. Hot meals and refreshments from Marshalls Farm Shop will be available for purchase throughout the day. Scott said: 'We are thrilled to welcome visitors to our family farm. 'We're looking forward to sharing the story of how our food is produced, the science behind modern farming and the essential role agriculture plays in everyday life. 'My family and our fantastic team will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at our busy farm.' Now in its 19th year, OFS is the UK farming industry's annual open day. More than 180,000 people attended its events throughout the UK in 2024. Each one is unique, offering insights into different farming practices and environments. OFS manager Annabel Shackleton said: 'Open Farm Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for visitors of all ages to connect with farming and the people who make it happen. 'Every farm has its own story, and events like these bring those stories to life in a way that's fun, educational, and inspiring.'

UN warns of 'ongoing tragedy' as Indigenous groups in Colombia face extinction
BOGOTA, Colombia, May 21, (AP): The United Nations human rights office in Colombia warned Tuesday that five Indigenous groups in a storied mountain range face "physical and cultural' extinction, a critical threat that stems from armed groups fighting over their territory and insufficient state protection. Scott Campbell, Colombia's representative for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement that the risk of physical and cultural extinction of Indigenous People of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is "an ongoing tragedy that we can and must prevent.' Campbell urged the Colombian government to protect the Kogui, Wiwa, Kankuamo, Arhuaco, and Ette Naka Indigenous groups, whose combined population is approximately 54,700 people. Campbell's statement followed a visit to the Sierra Nevada region, where U.N. officials spoke with representatives of these Indigenous tribes. "These groups are under various forms of cruel attack from non-state armed groups," Campbell said, highlighting the "devastating repercussions on their lives, their land, their territory, their self their spirituality.' In 2022, UNESCO added the ancestral knowledge of these Indigenous groups to its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. The recognition highlights the "fundamental role' their traditions play in preserving the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - a mountain range that emerges directly from the Caribbean Sea and boasts snowy peaks reaching nearly 6,000 meters. But for many years, the Indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada have been under attack from settlers, and now from rebel groups. Campbell said that rebel groups in the area are imposing curfews on Indigenous communities and interfering with their local assemblies. He added that hundreds of Indigenous people from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta have been forcibly displaced, while last year an Arhuaco community leader was murdered and a member of the Kogui tribe disappeared. Colombia's government has struggled to pacify rural areas where rebel groups and drug trafficking gangs fight for territory abandoned by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the large guerilla group that made peace with the government in 2016.

President Gustavo Petro has launched peace talks with most of the nation's remaining rebel groups, but the negotiations have yielded few results so far. Campbell urged the government to protect Indigenous people in the Sierra Nevada not only through military force, but by providing better access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities. 'The violent situation has its roots in disputes over control of territory, drug trafficking routes and various forms of illicit economic activity by non-state armed groups.' Campell said. ____
