On my radar: Kit de Waal's cultural highlights
Born in Birmingham in 1960, Mandy Theresa O'Loughlin is better known as author Kit de Waal. After a career as a magistrate specialising in adoption and foster care, she studied creative writing at Oxford Brookes University. Her debut novel, My Name Is Leon, was published in 2016, winning the Kerry Group Irish novel of the year award. De Waal, who chairs this year's judging panel for the Women's prize for fiction, is a fellow at Birkbeck, University of London, where she set up a scholarship for writers from marginalised backgrounds. Her latest book, The Best of Everything, is out now (Tinder Press. Dr Strangelove, Noël Coward theatre This was just extraordinary. Steve Coogan, who played Dr Strangelove and three other characters, has such stage presence that you don't notice it's a translation. You think of him as a comedian, but he's a really, really good actor. It's not the same as the film, but it translates very well. The set was incredible. Obviously, there are resonances between what's going on now and Dr Strangelove. It's cleverly done – a brilliant production. Sean Foley, who adapted and directed it, is a genius. Two Women Wearing Cosmetic Patches, Compton Verney, Warwickshire Compton Verney is a beautiful art gallery. At the moment it's displaying this unusual 17th-century painting: often you've got a white woman next to a black woman, but the black woman is subservient. This is one of the few paintings where both women are the same size and position. They're wearing these little spots of paper in the shape of a sun, moon and stars. They were a vanity thing: 'Oh, look at me. I look fabulous.' They look very strange, in fact – like when a man has shaved and he's got a bit of toilet paper on his face. Scott Matthews I recently went to see Scott Matthews, a folk singer I absolutely adore. He has won an Ivor Novello award but he's very under the radar. I've probably seen him five times. He's a sign writer by trade, so a friend of mine got him to write out the lyrics to my favourite song of his, calligraphy style. It's called Mona, which was the inspiration for my second novel: it's about a woman who doesn't come home, and it's about yearning. His music's fantastic, but the lyrics are extraordinary. I think the only person who has lyrics as good is Joni Mitchell. Paris Noir, Centre Pompidou At the weekend I'm going to Paris, and I can't wait. This is an exhibition of 150 black artists in France from 1950 to 2000, tracing their influence on French life, Paris and the international scene. I saw that it was coming and I couldn't have got tickets any faster. I think it's great to have something dedicated to black art at such a prestigious venue. I really applaud them for doing that. The work being showcased in the publicity material looked incredible. Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto by Candlelight, St Mary le Strand, London I go to hear this at least once a year – it's my favourite piece of music. I call it the theme music to Brief Encounter, which is probably a bit of an insult. It's a wonderful pairing of music and film: it speaks about sadness and deep love. I first saw the film when I was 18, and since then I can't bear to just hear one of the three movements. If ever I put it on, I make sure I've got 33 minutes to myself, so I can hear the whole thing. Whitby Abbey Last weekend, I went to Whitby and took the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey to see where Bram Stoker got the inspiration for Dracula. It's very beautiful, atmospheric. I can absolutely see why he got the idea for a vampire from there. It's a gothic ruin on the top of a hill, overlooking the sea. It's black stone. While he was waiting for his wife to join him in Whitby, he found a book that talked about this count in Romania who used to kill his enemies with a stake through the heart, and he just put two and two together.

Steve Kornacki to Exit MSNBC For NBC as SpinCo Chess Pieces Fall Into Place
One of MSNBC's election night stalwarts is jumping ship to NBC News, as Comcast's 'SpinCo' effort continues to shake up the talent rosters of the news channels in its portfolio. An NBC News spokesperson confirms that Steve Kornacki, MSNBC's data guru and an election night regular at the cable news channel's 'big board,' has inked a new deal that will see him exit MSNBC to focus on NBC News and NBC Sports programming as a contributor. More from The Hollywood Reporter MSNBC Hires Scott Matthews as SVP of Newsgathering Tom Llamas Named Anchor of 'NBC Nightly News' Inside MSNBC's 'The Weekend' Reboot Kornacki is expected to become a regular presence on Meet the Press (where he already appears with some frequency) as well as NBC Nightly News and Today, as well as on the NBC News Now streaming service. He will also bring his data analysis and signature slacks and rolled-up sleeves style to NBC Sports programming like NFL football, the Olympics, and the Kentucky Derby. Still, his exit from MSNBC comes as the cable channel is seeking to build out a new TV schedule and an entirely new news operation ahead of the SpinCo spinoff, which is supposed to take effect later this year. MSNBC's new lineup is set to launch this month, while it is in active hiring mode for its news operation under newly-named senior VP Scott Matthews. While MSNBC will keep its name in the spinoff, it will get new offices and studios in New York, and will be hiring its own staff in Washington D.C. It is likely that other on-air talent that appear on both NBC and MSNBC programming will need to choose sides in the coming months, though Kornacki's exit is notable in that it will likely see him expand his on-air presence on NBC programming, giving him a wider platform for his data analysis. Andrea Mitchell hosted her last show on MSNBC earlier this year, while the cable channel has brought on new talent like Eugene Daniels, Catherine Rampell, and Jackie Alemany, among others. The Los Angeles Times first reported Kornacki's move. MSNBC's Post-NBC News Plans May Include New Products
MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler and her senior executives are in the midst of preparing for the network to be spun off from the NBCUniversal News Group and join the newly-created SpinCo later this year. The network is in the process of looking for new office and studio space. It also recently hired Scott Matthews to oversee its newsgathering operation with plans to hire more than 100 journalists. According to a new story published in New York magazine, Kutler also intends to launch new products, including a streaming service in addition to MSNBC's linear channel. Other opportunities that may be explored include an expansion of its live event business-as well as digital and audio offerings-and working with brands that have built-in audiences. TVNewser reached out to MSNBC for comment on these plans, but received no response at press time. MSNBC has seen success from its live events business. Launched in 2023, MSNBC Live events frequently feature opportunities for the network's anchors and hosts to interact directly with their fanbase. This past January, MSNBC Live co-hosted the fourth and final Democratic National Committee leadership forum in Washington, D.C. And last September, it held two Democracy 2024 sessions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

MSNBC May Add New Products Once It's Split from NBC News
MSNBC's Rebecca Kutler and her senior executives are feverishly working behind the scenes preparing for the network's spin-off from its longtime corporate sibling NBC News. The network is in the process of looking for new office and studio space. It recently hired Scott Matthews to oversee its newsgathering buildout and is looking to hire more than 100 journalists. With the impending loss of NBC News' content and digital footprint, MSNBC is looking at this opportunity as a fresh start. As it embarks on its startup journey, MSNBC will lean heavily toward its progressive stance in creating its new identity. According to The New York Magazine, MSNBC, "backed by a $7 billion corporate parent, gets to build something bespoke to its audience." Kutler's cleared white board offers her the chance to launch new products, including a new streaming service to complete its linear service. Other opportunities that may be explored include further expanding its live event business, growing out its digital and audio businesses, and working with political platforms and brands with ready-built audiences. TVNewser reached out to MSNBC for comment and received no response as of this story's publishing. MSNBC has had success and can quickly build on its live event business. Launched in 2023 MSNBC Live Event are intimate forums and large-scale audience experiences with the network's anchors and hosts participating and interacting directly with their respective fanbases. This past January it co-hosted the fourth and final Democratic National Committee leadership forum alongside Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public, in Washington D.C. This was the network's second event in the nation's capital with the first one taking place in Oct. 2024. In Sept. 2024, it held two Democracy 2024 sessions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York. This featured MSNBC's top talent, providing audiences with in-depth discussions of the country's political landscape as it approached the 2024 presidential election. MSNBC Live Event is part of the network's continuing mission to engage its core audience beyond the screen. As the network recovers from a rough ratings spell period at the end of 2024, it is set to unveil a refreshed programming schedule in the next few weeks. The opportunity MSNBC has been presented with as it sets on an independent path gives it the leverage to explore new opportunities at brand expansion. It does this as its linear business faces challenging headwinds.
