Rockford egg hunt provides fun-filled afternoon for children of all abilities

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The second annual Rockford Easter Egg Hunt saw children of all ages on the hunt for over 100,000 eggs Sunday afternoon. Screw City Jeeps 815 hosted the event in hopes to be on track to bringing a Guinness World Record back to Rockford. 'Well, a long time ago, Rockford used to be the Guinness Book World Record Holder for the largest Easter Egg Hunt,' Screw City Jeeps Founder Randon Spires said. 'We're always trying to think of what we can do positively for the community. We did a little research, and we said, maybe not this year, but within five years we could bring this record back to Rockford.' The record is 500,000 eggs at a hunt. The day was full of activities for all ages and abilities. At the start of the day, there was a reserved time for children with disabilities and their families to hunt for eggs, something that Spires felt strongly about including. 'We feel like all children should be included regardless of who you are, disability or abilities,' Spires said. 'Everyone is always welcome.' Jamey Funk is an administrator for Screw City Jeeps and a parent. 'We're a special need parent too, so it was a big deal for us.' Funk said. 'We've been to many egg hunts. As a special needs parent, you have a hard time because your kids get trampled. It's too loud, or there is too much going on.' Funk said there was a lot of support and emotion throughout the day. 'It's hard to keep a dry eye,' Funk said. 'We do a lot, and we try to make it good for our children and special needs parents. It's [an] overwhelming response. The families are thanking us everywhere they go. They've never had this. We want to keep it going.' Spires said the organization is planning to continue this tradition with hopes of bringing the record back home. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
