Seafood chowder recalled due to potential health risk

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The SeaBear Company of Anacortes, Washington has issued a recall alert for two types of seafood chowder. The FDA reports that the Smoked Salmon Chowder and Alehouse Clam Chowder have been recalled due to potential Clostridium botulinum contamination, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness or death. Do not use the product even if it doesn't look or smell spoiled. Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning and can cause the following symptoms: General weakness Dizziness Double-vision Trouble with speaking or swallowing Difficulty in breathing Weakness of muscles Abdominal distension Constipation People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. The Smoked Salmon Chowder and Alehouse Clam Chowder were distributed through physical retail stores in Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington and direct home delivery via nationwide between 10/1/2024 and 03/14/2025. The recalled SeaBear Smokehouse chowder products are shelf-stable and packaged in a 12oz dark blue pouch. No illnesses have been reported to date. SeaBear initiated a voluntary recall after being informed of a pouch seal issue after a customer complaint. WA chowder sold in five states recalled over botulism risk

SeaBear Company, based in Anacortes, is recalling two types of seafood chowder because of botulism risk. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers are told not to eat the 'Smoked Salmon Chowder' and 'Alehouse Clam Chowder' even if they don't look or smell spoiled. SeaBear initiated the recall after a customer complained about a pouch not being properly sealed. Upon further investigation, the company found a mechanical issue with equipment, which caused the seals to not fully bond and made some pouches leak. No illnesses have been reported. The chowders were sold in Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington between Oct. 1 and March 14.
