Why tourism in Topeka is down

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Lodging Association is sounding the alarm on tourism in the capital city. They say a big part of that is due to Hotel Topeka and the closure of Heartland Park Racetrack. Topeka's tourism taxes is $50,000 off track for 2025, 15% less than expected. They say most of the shortfall comes from Hotel Topeka, which the city purchased next to the Stormont Vail Event Center. 'Yes, Hotel Topeka does play into this as it's been difficult to sell for group in particular,' Visit Topeka President Sean Dixon said. 'But we had some severe weather issues that withheld some of the stuff that was on the books already.' This isn't the first time there's been a downward trend in transient guest tax in Topeka. A good example Dixon gives is COVID – when the city fell $600,000 short in taxes. Although, local economic leaders say not to worry. While tourism points down at the moment, good things are coming to Topeka soon. 'We don't anticipate a significant reduction again for the first quarter of '26. We actually have a lot of great booked business in at that point,' Dixon said. Visit Topeka says sports, specifically, is going to do great for Topeka. Some of those events will include a major cheer and dance championship, and the Kansas Kids Wrestling Tournament, which brings thousands of people to the Capital City. 'The shoe could potentially be very valuable for people who suffer from foot or heel pain and or are likely to develop either as a consequence of their foot structures.' James Moore, Founder of the Marylebone Health Group, which aided the design, added: 'We've applied the latest in biomechanics and sports science to create footwear that doesn't just look exceptional but actively enhances the way people move and feel." Multiple upcoming events to lead to big economic development weekend in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Between the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the NCAA Division 2 Basketball Tournament at Washburn University, and the Kansas Kids Wrestling State Championship at Stormont Vail Events Center, it's a stacked lineup for economic development in the capital city over the next several days. 'It's great for us. In particular our hotels, our restaurants and our retailers,' Visit Topeka President, Sean Dixon said. 'If you're looking for a hotel room this weekend in Topeka it's going to be difficult. We're actually using rooms in Lawrence and surrounding areas now because of all the activity.' Dixon told 27 News that more than 2,000 people are expected to come in for the wrestling tournament. With hotel rooms booked up for as early as Thursday, March 13, the addition of the NCAA Division 2 Basketball Tournament makes it a near sellout. Shawnee County ranks in the top 7% of counties in the U.S. for wage growth With out-of-state visitors coming into Topeka, Hazel Hill Chocolate owner, Nick Xidis said he can't wait for the extra business. 'Having visitors come in not only to bring their dollars, but to see that we've got some of the best food and drink establishments you'd find anywhere in Topeka really helps us make the city better and brighter,' Xidis said. 'We measure this in different ways. Obviously as a county, as a city, any statewide business is good for Topeka and good for Shawnee County,' Dixon said. 'The DII tournament is good for Kansas. These are teams coming in from all over the country to compete. So, they're coming in state, they're paying that transportation to charge to come in here, but also spending money locally in a state that they are traveling to.' TPD talk Topeka St. Patrick's Day parade safety This isn't the first time Topeka has seen a big weekend in March. Dixon told 27 News they're working on having one again next year, and looking to renew a contract to keep the wrestling tournament right here in Topeka. For more local news, click here.
