Why Next Season Will See The Best Of Lewis Miley At Newcastle United
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - JANUARY 12: Lewis Miley of Newcastle United celebrates scoring his ... (Photo by) Getty Images When Lewis Miley made his Newcastle United debut weeks after his 17th birthday on May 28, 2023, it was clear there was something different about this academy graduate. It was the final day of the season, Newcastle had already secured Champions League qualification and was bringing its campaign to a close with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Miley had the face of a boy and the core strength of a Premier League player. He was tall and lanky, but deft with the ball at his feet. There was one moment in the game to sit up and take notice; he picked the ball up in space in the Chelsea half, before driving forward and releasing a thunderous shot that clipped the crossbar. Newcastle has never had the best track record of producing youth players capable of becoming permanent fixtures in the first team. Sean Longstaff was the last player to do so in 2019; although he is still part of Eddie Howe's squad, he has never fully convinced and is expected to leave this summer should a suitable offer arrive. But from that day. the talk around Miley wasn't simply if he would make it but when and how far he could go. His passing range and game intelligence were well beyond his age and soon, as is always the way, comparisons were made with another midfielder of the same ilk from the region: former Manchester United and England man Michael Carrick. He signed professional terms that summer, but it was important for everyone to stay calm about his development, especially Miley himself. It is hard to see anything fazing him, though. Longstaff had similar attention when he first came through; a strange competition among fans with West Ham's Declan Rice emerging at the same time, and serious interest from Manchester United over a possible transfer led to a £50m ($68m) price tag. By that point, he had suffered an injury, ironically in a defeat at West Ham when Rice scored; as he went on to play for England and join Arsenal, Longstaff faltered. His career has been more than good; he has contributed in the first team regularly under Howe, who he admits 'saved his Newcastle career' when he arrived in November 2021 after a tough spell under former manager Steve Bruce. But there is a ceiling to his game. Miley, and those around him, should heed some of the warnings of what happened with Longstaff. There are key differences too; Miley is more than used to the first team pressure, in the Premier League and Champions League, and he is still younger than Longstaff was when he broke through. By November 2023, he was playing every game in midfield due to a mounting injury crisis. He set up a goal for Alexander Isak in his first full game against Chelsea before more than holding his own away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Manchester United, playing alongside Bruno Guimaraes, who has since been made club captain. By that point, the rest of England had woken up to his talent; in December, he scored his first goal against Fulham. (Photo by James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images) Getty Images Since then, his progress has slowed. Midfielders who were ahead of him in the pecking order, Joelinton and Joe Willock, returned from injury and Sandro Tonali's 10 month gambling ban ended last August. Now some questions over Miley's future have been asked; does he need more first team football and should he leave St James' Park to get it? Loan deals have been suggested, while Crystal Palace has been credited with interest in a permanent transfer. Context and calm are required; Miley is now 19 and ready for more regular games, but he will get them at Newcastle, back in the Champions League, next season. Coaches are often put under pressure to play young talents as often as they can when it is clear how good they are, but overplaying as a teenager can have a negative impact on development and longevity of careers in later years. The key is balance; usurping Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton is not going to be easy, but Miley has a great platform to take the next step in his career, steadily. Now, of course, there is expectation. Everybody knows how good Miley is, and he is the poster boy for the future of Newcastle's academy. He has to keep growing and inspire more to follow in his footsteps. With Profit and Sustainability Rules hindering Newcastle's growth at every turn, a thriving youth system is imperative. Next season is huge for Miley. He can become a key player for Howe, potentially as first reserve for the trio of more experienced midfielders. Even though he is still behind them in the pecking order, it doesn't mean he'd be better off anywhere else.

Leeds optimistic on Jaka Bijol transfer, Habib Diarra bid and Sean Longstaff interest
Leeds United remain optimistic on completing a deal for Udinese defender Jaka Bijol with talks focused on a deal valued around €15-18million (£12.7-15.2m). There is less confidence at Elland Road on signing Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, despite lodging a bid of €26m (£22m). Meanwhile, Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff has emerged as another transfer target for Leeds. Last season, Newcastle triggered a one-year extension on the 27-year-old's contract to ensure he is secure until June 2026. Advertisement However, after eight league starts and less than 800 Premier League minutes in 2024-25, Leeds see Longstaff as an attainable midfielder this summer. There is no suggestion a bid has been made at this stage, but he is on the shortlist the club are working through in this window. Having racked up 171 Premier League appearances over the past seven years, Longstaff's top-flight experience appeals to newly-promoted Leeds. He has predominantly been used as a central midfielder by Newcastle, with some variation between defensive or attacking duties. Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz is another Premier League target The Athletic reported over the weekend, but of the names in the public domain, the most advanced negotiations are with Udinese over Bijol. Sources at Elland Road, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, say talks accelerated over the weekend and while no fee has yet been decided upon, the valuation will be between €15-18m. Bijol, 26, has amassed 90 appearances in Serie A over the past three seasons in the centre of the Udinese defence. Only four players won more than his 109 aerial duels in the Italian top flight last season. Leeds are less certain about the direction Strasbourg may take matters with Diarra, in whom wider interest is anticipated which is likely to enhance his market valuation. In the other direction, current Leeds defender Max Wober has been informed he can find a new club this summer. The 27-year-old played just 335 minutes in the Championship last season after an injury-riddled campaign. After playing for Austria over the weekend, Wober said: 'Leeds has already made it clear to me that they want to sell me. I might have been able to send out a letter of application (with my performance).' Any fee over £5m ($6.8m) would improve the club's profit and sustainability projections on the books. 'No rash signings' but Howe said 'speed is of the essence'?
We asked for your views on whether Newcastle United need to act urgently in the transfer market, with the first window closing at 19:00 BST on are some of your comments:Kegs: I think, or hope, our transfer signings will arrive from 1 July, once the current PSR window closes. Hopefully work is going on in the background for deals to be announced then. We need at least four players in and even more if we sell squad players like Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett, Sean Longstaff and Joe I would like us to get a centre-back in this first window. We could then get them training and embedded into the team in time for the new season. Defenders take longer to gel together, so we can't delay!Emgee: I hope they are negotiating a new contract with Callum Wilson so they can then sell him to a Championship club where he would do a great job. He is no longer a Premier League player. As for other signings, I can't see any progress. It seems all the talk about Champions League allowing us to attract the best players was a load of old No chance of a signing. There will be no rash signings from the I'm not expecting anything to happen now. I have faith in what's happening here but I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm disappointed in the lack of and interest in signings. I'm sure there are things happening behind closed doors but I'm checking for news two to three times a day and always feel As a Newcastle fan, I'm very worried about our lack of business so far, not least because Eddie Howe said speed is of the essence. I hope it won't be another window of doggedly pursuing a player with no end result. We need major reinforcements!

Premier League clubs in the race to sign Newcastle duo with Magpies set for overhaul after securing Champions League qualification
Two Newcastle midfielders could be on their way out of St James' Park this summer amid interest from Premier League sides. The Magpies secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the Premier League season and will be keen to bolster their squad after struggling to deal with the demands of domestic and European football during the 2023-24 campaign. Having failed to break into Eddie Howe 's settled starting side, several first team stars are expected to depart the club this summer. Among them include the likes of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock, who started eight and 11 matches in the Premier League respectively. Newly promoted side Leeds United are showing interest in Longstaff, who failed to register a goal or an assist in his 25 appearances in the top flight. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are among the clubs keen on Willock, who fared slightly better with two assists in his 32 outings. Elsewhere, Leeds also admire Shea Charles of Southampton and have asked about Udinese defender Jaka Bijol. Charles made 44 appearances on loan in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday and has earned three senior international caps for Northern Ireland.

Leeds target Newcastle star Callum Wilson on free transfer with Daniel Farke desperate for more firepower up front
LEEDS are targeting Newcastle striker Callum Wilson. Elland Road boss Daniel Farke is desperate for more firepower after promotion from the Championship. 1 And Newcastle forward Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season so is available to Leeds on a free transfer. The 33-year-old was a £20million arrival from Bournemouth five years ago. He has since achieved a terrific record of 47 goals in 111 Premier League appearances in the north-east. But his biggest problem at Newcastle has been injuries. And he has also moved down the pecking order due to the blistering form of striker Alexander Isak. Wilson has made 16 Premier League appearances this term. But just one of those has been a start. And he has also struggled with both hamstring and back issues. Wilson has won nine England caps too. But his last appearance for the Three Lions was against Scotland in 2023. Leeds, meanwhile, have also been looking at Wilson's teammate Sean Longstaff. He is in the final 12 months of his contract at Newcastle. The 27-year-old has made 31 appearances this term. And he will count as a club-grown player if he stays and features in Europe for Toon next season.
