What is McCowan's advice to 17-year-old McArdle?

Luke McCowan revealed he has imparted some sage advice to Sean McArdle following the 17-year-old's breakthrough to the Celtic first McArdle has made his first two appearances off the bench in the past week as Celtic defeated Hibs 3-1 and Aberdeen 5-1."He's quiet," McCowan said. "It was funny, I was saying to him... he was behind me in one of the signing sessions and obviously you just scribble your name, your number. He wrote his full name, just on a print."And I said, 'Sean, you need to work on that because you'll be there for 10 hours walking out Parkhead'."He's a quiet boy but he works hard. And you can tell that he's desperate to come into the Celtic first team and and prove himself and do well."And if he performs the way he did on Wednesday night I'm sure he'll have so many more cameos because he's been a credit to himself to come in and train well. But also the most important thing is to do well in the games and he's been great."McCowan was among the scorers at Pittodrie as a Celtic side showing eight changes eased to victory, but the midfielder is adamant the Scottish Cup final between the teams a week on Saturday will not be a formality."No, and it never will be," he said. "As you've probably seen at the end, there's probably a wee bit of bite in the game right at the 90th minute because they know the cup final's coming as well."Listen, it's a cup final, it's anybody's game. You need to show up. I'm sure we will have that performance ready and we need to push each other until then to make sure that our mentality is right going into it."

Rodgers has 'already named team' for Celtic trip to Aberdeen

Brendan Rodgers admitted he has already named his Celtic team for the midweek trip to Aberdeen - a dress rehearsal for the Scottish Cup final in a few weeks' Celtic boss told his players his next starting XI in the immediate aftermath of their 3-1 win over Hibernian on Saturday."You're obviously looking at recovery periods and looking at the Scottish Cup final and trying to work your way back," Rodgers said."Plus, we played a week ago, so no, I didn't think the need to do that [make lots of changes], but I've already named the team for Aberdeen to the guys, they know the team for Wednesday."Despite hinting at a radical changes to his side before the 3-1 win over Hibs, Rodgers only made three - bringing in Kasper Schmeichel, Auston Trusty and Nicolas also handed a debut to 17-year-old midfielder Sean McArdle from the bench."I trust all the players," he said. "The players I'll bring in will be equipped and ready to go there and win the game. It's just on the back of such a long, long season and having the freshness."Obviously, we'll have Ali Johnston, he'll be back then for Wednesday as well."I just think it's keeping the freshness in the team. The target was to arrive at the Scottish Cup final with as many of the players with minutes in their legs."And then that gives us an opportunity to choose the team and a bench to win."One position that will definitely rotate midweek is the goalkeeper, with Viljami Sinisalo swapping with Schmeichel."Viljami will play," Rodgers said. "It was just for Kasper to get the feeling again. He's been out for a long time, but I think that him being out, the positive is that having the chance to see Vil now and his authority, you see the calmness of him for such a young goalkeeper."We've really, really gained from that."But with Kasper, I know in football there's short memories, but not with me. He's been brilliant for me all season, and it's just nice to get him that feel, see how he reacts with his shoulder over the course of the week, and then we can look at it next week."

Who is Sean McArdle? Youngster profiled after Celtic debut

Saturday, May 10 2025, is therefore a date that will forever be etched in the memory of Sean McArdle. Read more: Introduced for the closing stages of Celtic's 3-1 win over Hibernian, the midfielder, albeit for only a brief spell, didn't look out of place. His fine switch of play to the feet of fellow substitute Paulo Bernardo gained widespread applause from the home crowd. Who exactly is Sean McArdle, though? Sean McArdle profiled The left-footed 17-year-old, born in 2007, signed his first professional contract with Celtic back in 2023. It was a three-year deal. McArdle has since established himself in the B team. He featured 25 times in the Lowland League this campaign as the youngsters finished second, scoring five goals along the way. McArdle also played in six of the kids' seven UEFA Youth League matches in 2024/25. Although McArdle isn't the tallest (Francis Turley referred to him on Instagram as 'the wee man' after his debut), he more than makes up for his lack of height in technical ability. Indeed, a futsal background means the teenager is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet in tight spaces. Saturday wasn't McArdle's maiden first-team experience after playing in a mid-season friendly with Sligo Rovers back in October last year. In the second half, he came off the bench and set up Luis Palma for a late equaliser with a fine delivery from wide towards the back post. What is next for McArdle, then? Well, first-team boss Brendan Rodgers made clear what he desires of the teen after his bow against Hibs: "I want him to be a personality," he said. "I like him, he's got decent legs, he's got a nice football brain, left-sided, he's got culture when he plays, and now he's got the best role models you can have in some of the players that we have here, like Callum and these guys, to learn from. "It gives him a little reward for the good work that he's done, now he's got to continue learning and see what comes from it." Rodgers has already hinted at making vast changes to his starting XI when he takes his team to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Wednesday evening. He has already told his players the lineup - whether McArdle is among those due to start remains to be seen.
