Barber Takeover 1.0 offers free haircuts ahead of school reopening

MIRI (June 7): A total of 100 local residents received free haircuts during the two-day Barber Takeover 1.0 community programme, held on June 4 and 5 at the Miri Visitors Information Centre.
The initiative, supported by the Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, aimed to ease the cost of living for local families as they prepare for the school reopening after the festive season.
Of the total of recipients, 41 individuals benefitted on the first day, with 59 more receiving services on the second day. The majority of participants were primary school pupils.
According to POSH WORK event manager Siti Hawa Sarkawi, the programme not only benefited the community but also serves as a platform for young barbers to showcase their skills.
'Programmes like this should be held regularly so their benefits can reach more people, while also strengthening community spirit and promoting entrepreneurship,' she said.
Located on Jalan Melayu, the Miri Visitors Information Centre was chosen as the venue due to its role as a tourism hub and a site for various community events.
Barber Takeover 1.0 also featured a free haircut workshop and sharing sessions, DJ and local talents performances, coffee and pastry booths, food trucks, and interactive activities for visitors.
The strong public turnout reflected strong support for the inclusive and community-friendly event.
Capping off the programme is the Barber Takeover Battle, set to take place this weekend (June 7 and 8), bringing together talented barbers from across Malaysia and Brunei.
