Four charged with injuring man using machete

BUTTERWORTH: Four men pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to charges of injuring a man using a machete on May 16. K. Ravindran, 28; D. Sathea, 32, were jointly charged with two others still at large for causing serious injuries to Ooi Jing Wei, 36, with a machete, while Muhammad Ilyas Kalairasan Abdullah, 33; and Singam, 53, were charged with abetting the crime. They were charged with committing the offence in front of Jalan Perak Duck, Jalan Raja Uda here at 8.35 pm on May 16. The charges against Ravindran and Sathea were framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. Muhammad Ilyas Kalairasan and Thanabala Singam, meanwhile, were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 326, which provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine or whipping upon conviction. Judge Nor Azah Kasran then fixed bail of RM7,000 for each of the accused before setting July 1 for mention of the case.

(Rawpixel pic) KOTA BHARU: Police have arrested a man in connection with the acid attack on a spa owner in Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok, last Saturday. Bachok district police chief Ismail Jamaluddin said the suspect was arrested at 4pm yesterday at a rubber factory in Kuala Krai. He said the 45-year-old man was detained to assist in investigations under Section 326 of the Penal Code. 'Police will apply for a remand order for the suspect at the magistrates' court today to facilitate further investigations,' he told Bernama when contacted today. Yesterday, Bernama reported that a female suspect had been arrested at the same factory on suspicion of being involved in the incident. Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the 38-year-old woman was arrested at 4pm on Wednesday. Advertisement Last Saturday, a female trader was doused with a liquid believed to be acid by an unknown individual in an incident near a convenience store in Beris Kubur Besar, Tawang, near Bachok. The attack left the victim with severe burns on her shoulder, back, arms and legs. Kelantan police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the 38-year-old local suspect was detained to assist in investigations under Section 326 of the Penal Code. He said the arrest was carried out by the special investigation division (D9) of the Kelantan contingent police headquarters, together with personnel from the Bachok district police headquarters in an integrated operation in front of a rubber factory in Kuala Krai at 4pm yesterday. 'The suspect works at a rubber factory and has no criminal record. Police also seized a Perodua Myvi, a mobile phone, and a vehicle control device,' Yusoff said in a statement today. He added that a remand application for the woman would be submitted to the Bachok magistrates' court today to facilitate further investigations. Yusoff said police would take strict action against any individual who causes serious injuries. File photo MIRI (April 22): A jobless man was sentenced to eight years in jail and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions' Court here today for causing grievous hurt to an elderly man using a block of wood. Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence against Kennedy Alban Sigai of Tansang, Betong, after considering several factors including his guilty plea, appeal for leniency, the severity of the offence, and public interest surrounding the case. Kennedy was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means. The offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine, or whipping upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the accused had intentionally caused grievous injury to William Ngau Taja, 63, using a block of wood. He committed the offence on April 14 this year at around 8.40am at the bus terminal in Jalan Padang here. The court ordered sentence to take effect from the date of arrest, which was on April 14.
