News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards: Boys basketball

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Here are the winners of the News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards in boys basketball. We begin with the boys large school winner — someone who was also on this stage last year. This junior broke a school record in January by scoring 46 points in a single game, surpassing the previous record of 44 points held by his brother Logan. Four days later he beat another of his brother's records, becoming his program's all-time leading scorer. In the Class A final he scored 31 points with 11 rebounds and eight blocks, leading his team to a championship and earning tournament MVP honors for the second straight year. If you thought that was good, in the state quarters he was two blocks short of a 30-point quadruple double with 31 points 11 rebounds 11 assists and 8 blocks. He added 29 and 8 in a state semifinal loss to the eventual champs and he's also a member of the National Honor Society. Our back-to-back large school Primetime 585 Player of the Year is from Wayne Central, Cameron Blankenberg. The Small school basketball award goes to a sophomore who led his team to a Sectional Championship and was named Class C3 Tournament MVP. In the state semifinals against the defending state champions, Moravia, he scored 27 points, adding nine rebounds, eight steals, and four assists to secure a 63-55 victory. He helps his team qualify for the school's first ever state championship game, where he scored a team high 19 points in a loss. His team finished as a state runner-up, but only after our award winner helped that squad to a 25-game win streak. For his outstanding season, which included already scoring his 1,000th point… again, as just a sophomore… he earned the Finger Lakes West Player of the Year. The News 8/Primetime Elite Award winner for small schools boys basketball is from Honeoye, Landon Washburn! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
