See You in Terre Haute Community Plan unveiled
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Today, community leaders gathered at the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce to unveil the new and updated See You in Terre Haute Community Plan.
The event included remarks from Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer, Union Health President and CEO Steve Holman, and Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun. The plan features 5 key pillars that community leaders say will help grow Terre Haute and support long-term success in the region. It also outlines a plan to address population decline in the area. Something Mayor Sakbun said will help them continue to grow the city of Terre Haute.
'The city posted a positive population growth of 166 residents last year,' said Sakbun. 'That is a huge turn of events, cause for many years it was declining. Our goal is, how do you elevate that to 500, 700, or 1,000 a year, and this plan will help us do just that.'
Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer said that as the city's population continues to grow, infrastructure will play a vital role in developing the community and accomplishing the goals set in place in the updated plan.
'As we see housing growth in the community, our population increasing, the need for safe water, good broadband, opportunity for broadband and all of those thing directly correlate together,' said Switzer. 'So, for us, infrastructure plays a huge role in this community plan and something the county is happy to take on and move forward with in the future.'
The plan is supported by a planning grant from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and has been developed through months of community engagement.
