EB Impact to launch initiatives to raise awareness of sustainability among seniors, youth
[SINGAPORE] Non-profit organisation EB Impact will launch two initiatives later this year to engage more youth and seniors with regard to sustainability and raise awareness of such issues, said executive director Gerald Wong on Friday (May 30) at the Seeds of Change gala. The Singapore-registered charity raised nearly S$200,000 for these initiatives at the event. The first initiative, also called Seeds of Change, is an intergenerational programme targeting seniors. Through partnerships with active ageing centres (AACs), EB Impact aims to increase awareness of sustainability issues while improving the well-being of the elderly. The programme will comprise urban farming and sewing activities, as well as hands-on craft projects within a makerspace. In an interview with The Business Times, Wong said that the idea came from wanting to provide 'more agency to seniors'. 'AACs want to reach a lot more seniors, and how do we do that? That's when I started thinking that we can use sustainability as a tool to bring these seniors to the AACs.' EB Impact will work with sector partners to train seniors, who can later on facilitate their own programmes and train others. The programme aims to engage 100 seniors across one to two AACs over the course of a year, and increase this to eight to 10 AACs over a three-year period. Sign Up Sign Up Wong added: 'The idea is to bring in people from all walks of life. We don't want AACs to be seen as just a place for seniors. Yes, it's focused on seniors, but why can't it be a community space?' There is potential for AACs to host cafes or shops where seniors can sell the products they make or harvest. These can be open to the public, thus bringing the community together. 'We can raise that awareness of sustainability and at the same time address a social issue, which is to get seniors to be more active and change the perception that they are active contributors to society rather than passive takers,' he said. To track progress, EB Impact will conduct well-being surveys and hold focus group discussions with seniors. It is also exploring partnering educational institutions to retrieve data and feedback on the effectiveness of the programme. EB Impact aims to kick-start Seeds of Change in the second half of this year. Something for the young ones too The second initiative is The Sustainability Youth Festival (TSYF), an annual event that offers a platform for youth to engage with sustainability topics. It will bring together students, schools, government agencies and corporate partners. TSYF will target young people from the primary school to tertiary levels, and aims to deepen their understanding about sustainability. It will comprise booths, which may be hosted by sector partners, as well as hands-on activities, learning experiences and small-group guided discussions. 'The main idea of TSYF boils down to making sustainability as accessible as possible,' Wong added. A key component of the festival is the TSYF Challenge, in which students can pitch sustainability solutions to win awards and grants to implement them in their communities. TSYF will take place on Aug 1 at Capitol Theatre. Established in 2019, EB Impact is dedicated to advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals in Singapore and Asia, with a focus on youth and education. Last year, it launched a community space in partnership with City Developments Ltd, introduced an education grant with ComfortDelGro and ran its third edition of the Sustainability Media Academy for journalists.

Seeds of change: Phase two of Kia's ‘Cycle of Life'
Kia Middle East & Africa, in collaboration with INNOCEAN MEA and production house electriclime°, has unveiled the second phase of its purpose-driven 'Cycle of Life' initiative. Titled Seeds of Change, the campaign continues to merge brand purpose with on-the-ground impact – focusing this time on biofabrication, youth education, and circular design. While the first chapter of Cycle of Life explored farm-to-table narratives, this new edition shifts to a farm-to-fabric focus. Directed by Kaley Emerson, Seeds of Change was rolled out as a short film series that was released across digital channels including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The campaign introduces biofabrication to young Zambians through the transformation of agricultural waste – specifically banana stems – into usable materials. In collaboration with The Waste Lab, co-founded by Ceylan Uren and Lara Hussein, and the African Education Programme, co-founded by Julie-Anne Savarit-Cosenza, the film follows the youth through their hands-on training in turning agricultural waste into usable materials. While the campaign's core message is delivered through film, its broader impact is tied to practical education and real-world implementation. Kia's use of nature-derived materials in its vehicle interiors – such as plant-based textiles and natural dyes demonstrates how circular design and bio-fabrication can inspire both product innovation and real-world community impact A key challenge — and achievement — of the production was ensuring sustainability across all phases. electriclime° adopted a range of eco-conscious practices throughout filming. From optimising travel logistics and limiting crew size to using local teams and reducing material waste, the production aimed to minimise its environmental footprint. A carbon estimate calculated using the AdGreen calculator initially projected emissions at 44.87 tCO2e. The team was able to reduce this to 41.42 tCO2e. While still notable, the savings of over 3 tonnes marked a meaningful step forward in reducing environmental impact. Other on-set efforts included recycling, composting food waste, sourcing ethically donated wardrobe pieces, and avoiding unnecessary set materials. The team also worked closely with local partners to ensure efficiency and relevance. This campaign is just the beginning. Over the next six months, Kia is building a program to transform the Kia Garden in Kafue, Zambia, into a fully productive farm. The site will serve as a hub for education in farming and biofabrication, empowering the local youth and promoting self-sufficiency through sustainable practices. London's largest sculpture park returns to Thamesmead
London's largest sculpture park has reopened, featuring contemporary art on former Thamesmead Golf Course. The Winter Sculpture Park, now in its fourth year, began welcoming visitors on March 2 and will continue until April 26. Spanning 6.5 acres of rewilded land along the River Thames, the free park offers an outdoor gallery experience for people of all ages. Sophie Fishel 'Drive Like a Girl' (Image: No.32 | @gallery_no.32) Founded and curated by No. 32 founders Meg Stuart and Kieran Idle, the park provides a chance to see large-scale public art in a unique location. This year's Winter Sculpture Park features 40 artworks by 34 artists, using a variety of materials. Notably, Claye Bowler presents works exploring the connection between queerness, landscape, and body. Ellie Harrison, known for her climate change piece 'Life Raft' at the Venice Biennale in 2015, also has work on show. LUAP 'Seeds of Change' (Image: LUAP) Joseph Ijoyemi, an East London Art Prize finalist, showcases pieces delving into identity, heritage, and cultural memory. Other contributors include Chloë Louise Lawrence, who combines working-class stories with themes of loss, longing, and nostalgia. Chanel Vegas presents a satirical sculpture symbolising NHS struggles, while Alegria Repila Smith creates a memorial to women victimised by male violence. Communal Clay and the residents of Thamesmead 'Thamesmead Community Sculpture' (Image: No.32 @gallery_no.32 .) Marcus Orlandi displays banners inspired by British tabloid exaggeration, and Jenny Holzer showcases pieces from her Truism series. The 2025 season began on Saturday, March 1, with a full day of performances, music, and workshops. Artists and performers included Andy Ash, David Sappa, Emma Louise Moore, Tom Hackett with Julian Woodcock, Joseph Ijoyemi, and SET Music. The Winter Sculpture Park is funded by the National Lottery through Arts, adding community value to this unique art experience.
