1 2 3 Hyderabad: In a fresh push to transform Telangana's Anganwadi centres, women and child welfare minister Seethakka on Wednesday announced a slew of initiatives, including the bi-weekly introduction of egg biryani into the nutrition menu and the distribution of advanced smartphones to Anganwadi staff. Speaking at a seminar in Hyderabad organised by the department of women and child welfare, Seethakka addressed critical issues affecting pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children at these grassroots centres. One of her first assurances was that the govt will supply benches to centres where women are still forced to sit on the floor. "We are committed to improving the comfort, nutrition, education, and dignity of our women and children," she said, pledging to eliminate nutritional deficiencies among children and bolster health and learning outcomes at Anganwadi centres. Among the key announcements include: Egg biryani twice a week to boost nutrition and variety in children's meals, modern smartphones for Anganwadi teachers, replacing outdated devices to improve record-keeping and communication, a new school bell system, designed to instil a sense of punctuality and discipline among both children and staff and distribution of 57 types of educational and recreational materials to enhance learning environments. She also announced launch of the 'Amma Mata Anganwadi Bata' drive to increase enrolments and 'Selfie with Anganwadi' to promote visibility and engagement. Seethakka also said that the department will soon fill 14,000 vacancies in Anganwadi centres to reduce workload and improve service delivery. She reiterated the govt's commitment to blacklisting suppliers of substandard materials, especially those dealing in egg supplies, to ensure quality food for children. "The changes won't just be cosmetic. We are working systematically to bring dignity and discipline to Anganwadis across the state," Seethakka said.

Telangana will support research initiatives: Minister Danasari Anasuya
HYDERABAD: Research and surveys play an important role in shaping government policies and welfare schemes, said Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya, also known as Seethakka. She was speaking after releasing the Young Lives Round-7 survey report at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) campus in Begumpet on Friday. The minister acknowledged CESS for conducting a comprehensive study on indicators such as education, health, nutrition, learning ability, work and family conditions. She stated that the findings from field-based surveys are useful in identifying gaps in existing policies and can contribute to policy formulation and revisions. Seethakka noted the government's focus on improving education, healthcare and nutrition, particularly for underprivileged and tribal communities. She said government hostels and schools are being upgraded with improved facilities and meals. The minister described malnutrition as a major barrier to development in tribal areas and referred to the government's initiative of distributing nutrient-rich chikkis to help girls tackle anaemia. Seethakka underlined the role of evidence-based surveys in highlighting public issues, developmental needs, and gaps in governance. She said the Congress government in Telangana would support such research initiatives. Others present at the event included Economic and Political Weekly editor and ICFAI School of Social Sciences professor S Mahendra Dev, CESS director and Young Lives India principal investigator E Revathi, NHM representative Dr Padmaja and Young Lives India country director Renu Singh.

New scheme to curb anaemia in adolescent girls
HYDERABAD: With an objective to prevent anaemia among adolescent girls, the state government has decided to launch a new scheme, Indiramma Amrutam, under which millet and peanut chikkis (energy bars made with nuts and jaggery) will be distributed among girls aged between 14 to 18. Women & Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya alias Seethakka will be launching this scheme in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Thursday, Initially, the government will implement this scheme in Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Kumurambheem-Asifabad and Jayashankar-Bhupalpally districts on a pilot basis through Anganwadi centres. Under this scheme, the government will distribute 30 chikkis, in two instalments, per girl per month. Each chikki will contain 600 calories, 18 to 20 grams of protein and micronutrients. According to officials, the government decided to launch this scheme as 64.7 per cent of adolescent girls in Telangana are suffering from anaemia as per the National Family Health Survey-5. 'The government is already providing iron and folic acid tablets for girls after conducting Hb tests. Now, it has come out with a new scheme that will help in curbing anaemia among adolescent girls,' the officials added. Seethakka, meanwhile, asserted that Indiramma Amrutham scheme will become a game-changer for girls' health. 'Initially, this scheme will be implemented in three districts where the prevalence of anaemia is relatively high. It will be extended to other districts in the future,' she added.
