Leganes part ways with Borja Jimenez following relegation
Leganes have confirmed that they have parted ways with manager Borja Jimenez, who was out of contract at the end of the season. Los Pepineros saw themselves succumb to relegation on Saturday, despite beating Real Valladolid 3-0, as Espanyol managed to beat Las Palmas. It was disappointing end to the campaign for Leganes, who managed to beat Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, making it to 40 points, but still narrowly missing out on survival. With a small budget, most had considered that Leganes and Jimenez had done well to come this far. Leganes announce Borja Jimenez departure Jimenez was out of contract this summer, and it appears that he was not offered the chance to continue in Segunda. Owner Jeff Luhnow and Director of Football Andres Pardo will give a press conference on Monday afternoon to explain the decision, but they have confirmed that Jimenez will not continue. He himself had noted that he felt his continuity was in doubt during the final weeks of the season. Advertisement Taking charge of Leganes at the start of last season, Jimenez guided Leganes to the Segunda title and an unexpected promotion. The 40-year-old former Deportivo La Coruna manager will now be on the hunt for fresh opportunities. Borja Jimenez press conference Uncertainty at Leganes was not appreciated by dressing room Just a few days before the relegation decider this past Saturday, midfielder Renato Tapia gave an alarming interview in which he admitted that some of the work behind the scenes at Leganes had hindered their survival bid. He told Relevo that not everyone had put in the same level of effort. 'Things have happened throughout the season that really haven't helped us. We're the players who take to the field, and some more, some less; we're the ones who are there, we're the ones who want to be there, the ones who truly know what's happening within the club. I think that in the end, when it's all over, many will surely be able to hold their heads high and say that we fought for this, for the shirt, for the badge… and no doubt others won't be able to say the same.' 'Maybe so [did it damage the team?], I don't know. We'd have to ask each player individually. I think people see that; they're not stupid. Rather than leaving it to the imagination of the people and the fans, we have to remember that, in the end, we're the ones here putting our chests out and trying to get through this situation. Then, I could tell you the rest: one yes and one no, maybe the board, maybe the sporting director who shouldn't have left, or the player who should have been renewed… I think we're professionals and we owe it to the team and the club until the end of our contract, and that doesn't mean it should hinder you from doing what you have to do.'

Official: La Liga's final relegated club confirmed
The three clubs relegated from La Liga to the 2nd division of Spanish football have on Saturday been confirmed. This comes owing to developments in the season's final round of fixtures. Heading into this afternoon, two of the teams relegated from Spain's top-flight had already been mathematically confirmed, with Real Valladolid and Las Palmas facing up to a year back in the Segunda. This left Espanyol and Leganés to battle it out for survival, in respective meetings with bottom two Las Palmas, and Real Valladolid. And when all was said and done, it was the former who ensured their La Liga status for at least another 12 months. Whilst Leganés were busy making short work of Valladolid to the tune of a 3-0 triumph, Espanyol proved too much for Las Palmas, to the tune of a 2-0 victory of their own. As much saw the Periquitos jump all the way up to 14th in the table, leaving Leganés 18th, a point off safety with no games left to play. Conor Laird – GSFN

Ronaldo Nazario looking to sell Real Valladolid in June – offers below asking price
Ronaldo Nazario looking to sell Real Valladolid in June – offers below asking price Given the ire that the Brazilian has provoked at the club, with the Mayor of Valladolid even advocating against him, it seems like it would place Pucelanos in a genuine dilemma if they were asked if they would rather Real Valladolid stay in La Liga this season or Ronaldo Nazario left the club. There is still hope of one of those happening before next season though. Advertisement While Valladolid looked doomed to relegation back to Segunda, a third in five years, Diario AS say that June could be a key month for the sale of the club. Ronaldo is looking to part ways with Los Blanquivioletas, having struggled to make progress with the club. Despite at one point reportedly turning down offers of around €80m for Valladolid, the Brazilian is now willing to accept bids of around €50m as per previous reports. However AS note that the offers currently on the table barely reach €40m. Investment groups from Mexico are cited as the most likely buyers, although there is a local group of business people also interested. Image via Factoria 9 / Marcos Calvo Ronaldo has become public enemy number one at the Nuevo Jose Zorrilla, and has not appeared at the stadium since the 19th of August – in fact, he has been seen more often this season at the Santiago Bernabeu. Frequent are the chants of 'Ronaldo, go now', with a number of promises unfulfilled after seven years at the club. Despite bouncing back from relegation twice, his statement in 2019 that Valladolid could be in the Champions League in five years was held against him, as has his objective of stabilising La Pucela in Primera, as a third relegation looms this year. This has been by far the worst season yet under Ronaldo, with three different managers in charge, and interim coach Alvaro Rubio taking the reins due to a lack of alternatives.

Espanyol player under investigation amid sexual assault allegations
Espanyol player under investigation amid sexual assault allegations Espanyol have been riding the wave of Friday's incredible 4-0 victory at Rayo Vallecano, but they have been brought back down to Earth in the last 24 hours as one of the players involved at Vallecas is facing a serious personal issue. Advertisement Alvaro Aguado was introduced as a 83rd minute substitute in the weekend's win in the Spanish capital, and he produced a late assist for Pere Milla to score Espanyol's fourth. Less than 96 hours later, and he has now been placed under investigation after being accused of sexual assault. As per El Pais (via Relevo), Aguado was reported to the authorities recently following an incident at a nightclub in Barcelona that took place back in June 2024 during Espanyol's celebrations after securing their promotion back to La Liga, which came after a 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo in the Segunda play-off final at the RCDE Stadium. The alleged victim is reported to be a worker at the Catalan club. Image via Europa Press It was the Catalan police that the incident was reported to, and now, the court has decided to open an investigation into the matter. They have summoned Aguado for questioning, and his testimony will be heard in mid-May, with the 28-year-old said to 'strongly deny having committed any crime'. Advertisement As per the report, Espanyol have given a response on the matter, stating that 'the right to the presumption of innocence of the player be respected'. As such, it is expected that Aguado will remain in first team contention, and at the disposal of head coach Manolo Gonzalez, for the time being. News of Aguado's case comes weeks after former Barcelona and Sevilla defender Dani Alves was acquitted in his own sexual assault trial after a successful appeal, although that matter is not quite closed yet as the prosecution is expected to file their own appeal against that decision.

German giants revive pursuit of Real Madrid coach
German giants revive pursuit of Real Madrid coach Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez has one of the more curious coaching careers. After a season with the under-19s at the club, the legendary forward is now in his sixth year with Real Madrid Castilla, an unusually long stint for most aspiring coaches. And it has not been for want of offers. On several occasions former club Schalke 04 have approached him over a move, as have German giants Hamburg and reportedly even Bayer Leverkusen. He also interviewed for the Villarreal job last season, although Pacheta was eventually appointed. Advertisement On several of those occasions, Raul has turned down the chance to leave, seemingly happy in the Spanish capital. Originally, he had harboured hopes of following in the footsteps of Zinedine Zidane, and while President Florentino Perez has been happy to keep Raul on at Castilla, it appears he is no longer in consideration for the top job at the Santiago Bernabeu. Image via Marca According to Diario AS, Schalke are set to approach Raul again this summer, as they attempt to return to the Bundesliga. They say there is 'certain optimism' in Gelsenkirchen that this could be the summer that they persuade Raul to return to Germany. However the Madrid-based daily go on to assure that Raul is not thinking about his future, and is focused on finishing the season with Castilla first. After a tough start that had Castilla in the relegation battle, they now lie eighth, just four points removed from a play-off spot. Having twice fallen short in the play-offs, Raul may be set on trying to lead Castilla in Segunda after so many attempts. His willingness to continue at Valdebebas has surprised many, and were he not there, Los Blancos likely would have promoted Alvaro Arbeloa to his position. The latter does have the favour of Perez, and could well be a candidate for the top job down the line depending on how he does at Castilla if he does take that job.
