‘Nice to be outdoors': Grimsby Farmers Market returns this week

For Beth Ashton, having a booth at Grimsby Farmers Market is a welcome change from preparing meals in her restaurant. 'It's nice to be outdoors,' said the owner of August Restaurant in Beamsville. She will be baking pizza and offering other baked goods when the 18th annual market returns on Thursday. 'I actually get to talk to my customers, which as a chef doesn't happen very often.' This will be Ashton's ninth year at the popular market. 'We have great, loyal customers,' Ashton said. Main Street East along the market area will be closed to all but emergency vehicles, from 1 to 8 p.m., each Thursday to allow for market set up and take down. The market runs every Thursday, from 3 to 7 p.m., until Oct. 9. Market steering committee chair Michelle Seaborn said this year's market features 37 food and farm vendors, two more than last year and includes 21 area growers. 'I spent the whole (past) weekend putting the last touches on everything,' said Seaborn, who is a Grimsby regional councillor and co-owns a local farm. Seaborn said more special events are slated for the market and include a July 31 Teddy Bear Picnic. Youngsters are encouraged to bring their bears and enjoy a variety of activities. Carolyne Seibert, Grimsby organic farmer, and ice cream maker Simon Pellegrino look forward to the return of the Grimsby Farmers Market on Thursday. Carolyne Seibert from 9 Acres Organic Farm on Ridge Road East is back at the market for a third year. 'I love the fact that this is my community,' Seibert said. 'It's in my backyard and the customers are so loyal.' New to the market this year, Seibert noted, are bingo cards that feature the names of the vendors. 'When people make a purchase from a vendor, they get a stamp on their bingo card and based on the (required) combination of different stamps, they'll get their name entered in a draw to win a gift basket worth over $500,' Seibert said. The draw is on Oct. 2. Hopefully, Mother Nature co-operates. 'We need the hot weather, we need people to want ice cream and sorbet,' said Grimsby ice cream maker Simon Pellegrino. His Simon Says Ice Cream operation returns to the market for a fourth consecutive year. This year's market will not be affected by the town's $9-million Downtown Reimagined project. The water main and sewer work, along with road and streetscape upgrades, is not expected to begin until next year.

Person of interest in Rostraver murder investigation recognized by police in front of Florida home

For a full month, there were no updates on who police were searching for in connection to the death of Jennah Seibert in Rostraver, despite surveillance video being released from a 7-11 in New Eagle showing a person of interest. That changed on Wednesday, when the Westmoreland County District Attorney said a person of interest, who is the same man in those surveillance videos, was in custody on unrelated charges. Channel 11 sources said that man is Dorian Jeri-Greene. >>> Person of interest in Rostraver woman's murder in custody on unrelated charges 'It's a bit of a relief, yeah, because it was close to home here, and you know, it is a relief,' said Scott Rice of New Eagle.'It's surprising it took so long, but I'm glad they got him.' That's how many in the Monongahela area are feeling. 'Oh, I'm glad, right. I'm glad he's caught,' said Ronald Pergola of Carroll Township. Jeri-Greene was arrested on Tuesday in Tampa, Florida. According to court documents, police spotted him in front of a home in Tampa, and recognized him as a man with warrants out of Pennsylvania. That warrant is for an incident in Washington County in February, where he is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home, then strangling her. Jeri-Greene has not been charged in Seibert's death. Jeri-Greene waived his right to an extradition hearing and is now waiting to be brought back to Pennsylvania. Court records show he has a significant history of domestic violence in Florida, including two felonies. In Pennsylvania, aside from that incident in February, he had a previous DUI conviction, pleaded guilty to a harassment charge in Monogahela in 2013, and to a criminal mischief charge in 2010. Jeri-Greene was active on TikTok, often posting videos working in construction. While it's unclear how, it appears Seibert and Jeri-Green knew each other. Seibert's Instagram page shows that the two followed each other's profiles. Many in the community are just glad there's a development after nearly a month of uncertainty since Seibert's death. 'You know, you don't hear about that kind of stuff around here,' Rice said. 'I'm glad they're doing their job, and I hope they keep it up.' Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Low snowpack heading into summer, concerns about drought in Okanagan

Creeks are strong now, but after a warm April, the Okanagan's early snowmelt could lead to problems come summer. Smaller creeks might be at risk of running dry this summer, experts predict. 'Looking at natural systems, smaller creeks, there is going to be the potential that they'll get into the lower flow or lower than the critical environmental flow needs for rivers and even some of the smaller creeks have the potential to run dry,' said Jonathan Boyd, a hydrologist with the River Forecast Centre. According to the May snowpack bulletin, provincially, the snowpack has dropped from 79 per cent to 71 per cent of normal since April, with the Southern Interior seeing the sharpest declines. Snowpack levels in the Okanagan, in particular, have dropped from 82 per cent to just 67 per cent of normal. Story continues below advertisement 'The ideal situation moving forward is cooler, wetter conditions in May and June,' Boyd said. In Mission Creek, the Casorso Road underpass was closed this week due to high waters, a fairly routine closure caused by the region's fluctuating water levels. 'It's just due to the freeboard available there,' said Brittany Seibert, a regional emergency manager. As water concerns continue, emergency officials are already shifting their focus to the upcoming wildfire season. With the potential for drought, Seibert warns that the region could face another intense fire season. 'It all depends on what happens in the next few weeks with rain, snowpack and prolonged dry periods,' she said. For residents, now is the time to prepare. 'It's important to do FireSmart work in your yard and have emergency plans in place, including a grab-and-go bag,' Seibert advised.

Habitat for Humanity of Cass County breaks ground on community build

Gathering in an empty lot covered with dirt and patches of grass, a family envisioned life in a new neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity of Cass County broke ground Saturday for its community build home. Construction should be wrapped up by autumn. The ceremony started off with some prayers. 'I thank you, God, for the location. I thank you for the peace that already rests on this property,' Benjamin Grant, vice president of the local Habitat for Humanity board, said with his head bowed. 'Lord, I just feel … this beautiful presence here, lord, of just tranquility.' He went on to thank the heavens for adding the family that will move into the home — Alaina Small, James Seibert and their children — to the neighborhood before asking board secretary Reba Griffith to read scripture. She chose a few verses from Psalm 91, which talks about the protection of those who abide by scripture. Seibert and Small had been introduced to the community earlier in the week during a banquet by Habitat for Humanity. During an interview with the Pharos-Tribune at the banquet, Seibert explained he proposed to Small on Christmas. She had expected the proposal, but was surprised by her application later being accepted by Habitat for Humanity. 'It's been a great experience partnering with Habitat,' Small said at the banquet. 'I'm ready to build. I've always wanted to build my own home and now I'm getting to do that.' Habitat for Humanity of Cass County's executive director, Scott Jewell, said during the banquet the organization is already looking for more families to help. The local group, which started building houses again last year after briefly disbanding in 2020, hopes to eventually build four to six houses a year. Jewell and other leaders with the organization asked for the community's help to accomplish those goals. So far, Habitat for Humanity of Cass County has raised roughly 70% of the $100,000 goal for its current community build. Anyone who donates will get a 50% state tax credit. Other than monetary donations, the organization is looking for volunteers. They don't have to be skilled laborers to help, Jewell noted. He invited anyone interested in helping to reach out to info@ In total, six people led prayers hoping to bless the land and new family. Among them was pastor Randy Griffith. 'I've seen people's lives change. I've seen families that work that society gave up on, and their lives changed now,' Griffith said. He later added, 'It started out by Habitat being one that was used as a vessel by God to be able to reach into people's lives.' Later, donning reflective vests and hard hats, the couple took turns pushing a shovel into the ground and pulled up fresh soil. Jewell and Mark Snyder, board president of the local Habitat for Humanity, followed suit. They all posed for photos afterward. Several ate cookies under a Habitat-branded tent. Standing with two of their children, Small and Seibert reflected on what the ceremony meant to them. For Small, it marked a new beginning. Looking toward the dog park that sat caddy corner to the lot, Seibert said the home would be great for the kids. The family has three dogs: a husky, beagle and Chihuahua. 'I'm so excited,' Small said, 'It's just a lot of feelings.' 'It's just a new beginning with the family,' Seibert added.
