Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Selangor Aero Park unmatched in Asean region for space, says Loke

SEPANG: The Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will complement Malaysia's aspirations to become a leading air cargo hub in the Asean region, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. "We have the recipe and preconditions said to be unmatched by any other country in the Asean region because KLIA spans 100 sq km. With this space, various plans can be implemented," he said. Loke said there are three parallel runways in KLIA at present, with the potential to construct up to five runways. "There are no other airports in Asean with this space and we also have very good connectivity. "We want to turn KLIA into the main air cargo hub in Asean." said Loke. Loke also said SAP, an effort between MAHB and Mentri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), will become a specific industry zone that targets companies in the aerospace manufacturing and supply chain sector. "This includes the manufacturing of aircraft components and related technology, as well as maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services," he said. Also present during the press conference was Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who said that GE Aerospace would be the launch tenant at SAP after it secured 100 acres of land in its first phase. "The first day, we are booked by 50%. This is a very good sign for the future," added Amirudin. He also said several MRO companies are in talks to operate with SAP. The SAP is a key component of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030 to generate RM55.2bil in annual aerospace revenue and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Spanning about 600 acres within the KLIA aeropolis, the park has a potential gross development value (GDV) of RM2.3bil. The first phase of the SAP spans 200 acres and approximately 400 acres will be progressively released beyond 2028 in accordance with infrastructure readiness and investor demand.

Amirudin moots Selangor Rail project to boost aerospace development

SEPANG: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has mooted the idea of the proposed Selangor Rail project to complement the Selangor Aero Park (SAP). Amirudin in his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of SAP said the proposed rail network is the missing link that would connect key infrastructure and unlock the full potential of the state's aerospace development. "The proposed rail line, initially presented to the Transport Ministry several months ago, would serve to integrate the state's industrial zones, communities, and major transport hubs across Selangor and the Klang Valley. "Moving forward, if we are able to realise the full potential of SAP, there is one missing link which can join the dotted lines to connect industry, people, and the major transport infrastructure in Selangor and the Klang Valley, and that is the Selangor Rail. "It would connect Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Subang Airport, the existing seaports in Port Klang, and the upcoming third port in Carey Island, subject to the approval of the federal government," he said. Amirudin also said that despite the financial complexities involved, Selangor is ready to extend its full intellectual and technical support to turn the proposal into reality. In February, Selangor Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the proposed 210km rail line is expected to take 10 years to complete once it receives the go-ahead from the government. Ng also said that the proposed line could reduce travel time by an hour for those travelling from Sabak Bernam to KLIA as compared to those travelling by road.
