Alliance on cards? Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS unions join hands; moves comes ahead of BMC polls

MUMBAI: Amid reports that the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena ( MNS ) could form an alliance for the BMC polls, netas from both parties came together against a private airline over alleged anti-worker practices. This added fuel to speculation of a potential reunion between the estranged Thackeray cousins. Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant and MNS functionary Nitin Sardesai jointly met officials and workers of the airline on Wednesday to press for their demands and warned the company of Sena-style action if the demands were not met. Sawant alleged that a 'BJP-backed union' set up in May pressured the airline's management and warned the airline's management against ignoring workers' demands, which prominently included a wage hike and better contracts. So on Wednesday, we met employees and also took up the issue with the Labour Commissioner. If the airline management doesn't respond, we will take to the streets in Shiv Sena style. The wage hike must be agreed and given," Sawant said. Sardesai stated that they met only to discuss and press for the workers' wage hike and other demands, emphasising that the MNS was working for the Marathi youth. "This meeting had nothing to do with the alliance. Any decision or view on any alliance with anyone will be taken by our President Raj Thackeray. We know that the Marathi people and workers of the airlines who are facing injustice are with us," Sardesai said. Recently, at the Sena (UBT) foundation day event, indicating that the option of an alliance with the MNS was on the cards, Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray said that he would do what is in the minds of Shiv Sainiks and the people of the state and that people would know about it soon.
