When will special election for John Horhn's Senate seat take place?

Mayor-Elect John Horhn will be moving his office furniture and other belongings into Jackson's City Hall on July 1, but he also will be leaving a seat unfilled in the Mississippi Senate. On Tuesday, June 3, Horhn earned a decisive mayoral victory in this year's Jackson municipal election. Overall, he beat out opponents, including incumbent Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, three times before finally being the last one standing. That means the state's 26th Senate District will have a special election later this year. Horhn's Senate district includes areas in both North Jackson and portions of Madison County, reaching as far north as just outside of Flora. It also extends west to Bolton and Edwards. Horhn wins: State Sen. John Horhn is Jackson's next mayor, with dominating win Gov. Tate Reeves will have 30 days after Horhn leaves his Senate position to call the special election, and counties where the election will take place must be given 60-days' notice before the election. Reeves had already called for other legislative seats to be filled earlier this year. Those were former Sen. Jenifer Branning, who was elected to the Mississippi Supreme Court in 2024, and for two House members who died last year. As for when the Senate District 26 special election would be, if Reeves was to wait the full 30 days to announce it, it would put the election around early September. He could also set it for November, when other special legislative elections are slated to take place. Live election coverage: John Horhn dominates Jackson, MS mayor's race. Ward 1 too close to call. Follow live updates It is a bit early for candidates to be jumping in the water and going after Horhn's Senate seat, but there are a few hopefuls within the state Democratic Party. Democratic Party Chairman Cheikh Taylor said a handful of people are potentially interested in running for Horhn's Senate seat, including local attorneys, activists and a former lawmaker. Taylor declined to say specifically who he had in mind. As for a Republican challenger to the seat, the district itself could prove a hard nut to crack. Horhn, and by extension the Democrats, have held onto the Senate district for at least the past two decades since Horhn first entered the office. Hinds County Republican Party Executive Committee member and former Director Pete Perry said it would be a hard task to find a GOP candidate to duke it out with a strong Democratic candidate, but the party would still look to ID people to compete. "It would be very difficult to (run as a Republican) in that district," Perry said, noting that the legislative district, much like others, is drawn based on voting population demographics. District 26, is a majority Black district. Perry also said that while he hasn't heard of any concrete bids for the Senate seat, candidates will soon be coming out of the woodwork. The race was called for after Republican Ryan Aument resigned to join Senator Dave McCormick's staff. 'Honestly, we were just willing to listen to folks, so that is what happened,' Malone told abc27 after the win. 'I think the chaos at the federal level has definitely helped in our campaign.' The 36th District includes Manheim Township, Lititz, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy Township, among others, in Lancaster County. Republicans retain control of the Senate chamber with a 27-23 majority. For the first time in months, Pennsylvania Democrats have reason to celebrate. Democrats claimed victory in a Lancaster County state Senate district where President Donald Trump won by 15 percentage points in November. The Associated Press had not called the race as of 11 p.m., but Democratic candidate James Malone was ahead in unofficial totals by approximately 500 votes with 100% of precincts reporting. The 36th Senate District was formerly represented by state Sen. Ryan Aument (R., Lancaster). Aument resigned from his seat in December, after accepting a job to be U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick's state director. Malone, the mayor of the small borough of East Petersburg outside Lancaster city, was on track to defeat GOP County Commissioner Josh Parsons, a staunch Trump supporter who is known in the county GOP for his political prowess. Parsons seemed to concede late Tuesday night, posting on X 'it appears we will come up a little short.' 'Tonight in Lancaster County, Pennsylvanians rejected a candidate who embraced the extremism and division coming out of DC,' said Gov. Josh Shapiro in a statement, who won the same Senate district in his 2022 gubernatorial bid by two percentage points. 'In a district carried comfortably by Donald Trump just a few months ago, they chose a better way forward — an embrace of competence, commonsense, and a desire to bring people together.' Democrats saw an opening in the district, as mail vote totals seemed to give Malone more of an advantage than usual. U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D., Pa.) came to Lancaster over the weekend to canvass for him, and Shapiro made a robocall to voters in the district today, a spokesperson said. Ahead of Tuesday's election, the state Senate race garnered the interest of conservative activist and mail voting advocate Scott Presler, and even the attention of Elon Musk. Presler posted on X late Tuesday that he had warned Republicans that Democrats could flip the seat. 'I asked for help in Pennsylvania & no one helped us,' he added. Democrats also won a special election outside Pittsburgh to reclaim House Democrats' one-seat majority to again lead the chamber after a Democratic member died in January. Democrat Dan Goughnour, a McKeesport police officer and school board member, won Tuesday's special election to fill a vacancy in the 35th Legislative District created by the late Rep. Matt Gergely's death earlier this year. Gergely, 45, died in January following a health emergency. This story is developing and will be updated.
