Buddy Carter becomes first Republican to launch campaign for Ossoff's seat
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) launched his candidacy for Senate in Georgia, the first of possibly several Republicans officially seeking to oust Sen. Jon Ossoff (D). 'Georgians will have a very simple choice in 2026: do you want a MAGA warrior for you or do you want a trans warrior for they/them? I'm with you. You can guess where Jon Ossoff is. Game on,' Carter wrote Thursday in a post on the social platform X. Carter's announcement comes after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) made a much-anticipated decision against running for Senate in 2026. The popular two-term governor's decision was a blow to Republicans, as he was seen as the strongest opponent against Ossoff. Without Kemp in the race, attention turns to several possible candidates who may be looking at running including GOP Georgia Reps. Mike Collins, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rich McCormick, and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R). Carter's announcement video said Georgia 'spoke' in favor of President Trump in the November election, but Ossoff 'doesn't care.' It slammed Ossoff for votes against legislation that would have increased funding for border security and that would have pulled federal funding from schools that transgender girls and women to participate in girls and women's sports. 'Jon Ossoff is on the wrong side. Trump has a warrior in Buddy Carter,' the narrator states before the ad shows Trump praising the congressman. 'Buddy helped Trump secure our border and put America first.' Ossoff, a Democratic senator in a state Trump carried, will be a top target for the GOP in next year's midterms. Carter told reporters Georgia needs a senator who will advance Trump's 'America First' policies. He acknowledged the primary could become crowded but said he's running on his record. He said he was waiting for Kemp to make his decision before announcing his own decision. 'I'm for the people of Georgia. I'm for the people who voted for America First policies, and I've been supporting the president ever since I've been up here,' he said. Ossoff's campaign manager Ellen Foster said in a statement that the first-term senator will defeat any Republican challenger he faces. 'While the GOP primary field scrambles to outmaneuver each other and audition for Donald Trump's support, Senator Ossoff's campaign is already building the most effective and unstoppable turnout effort in Georgia's history,' Foster said. The Senate Democrats' campaign arm was quick to denounce Carter's candidacy, saying he 'is kicking off a messy, divisive primary in Georgia that will expose their flawed candidates and leave them with a damaged nominee.' The group said in a statement that Ossoff is 'a champion for Georgians and we are confident he will hold this seat in 2026.' Greene, who has said she's considering a run of her own — as well as a potential gubernatorial bid to replace the term-limited Kemp — said she isn't worried about a messy primary in response to Carter's announcement. 'If I were to get in, I'm not concerned about it at all,' she told reporters. 'Every single poll shows that I overwhelmingly win.' Julia Manchester contributed. Rep. Lauren Underwood won't be running for Dick Durbin's Senate seat
U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Illinois) said Monday that she will not be running for the U.S. Senate seat set to be vacated by Dick Durbin. Underwood explained her decision on CNN Monday afternoon. "So when I reflected on the way I could best serve families in Illinois and around the country, I really decided to stay in the House of Representatives and in leadership, and to help the D-Trip [DCCC, or Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee] as we seek to reclaim the majority," Underwood said in an interview with CNN political correspondent Kasie Hunt. Already, two of Underwood's U.S. House colleagues, Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly (D-Illinois) have each announced they are running for Durbin's seat — as has Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton.

Philippines' Marcos says open to reconciling with Dutertes
MANILA: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said he was open to reconciling with the Duterte family, one week after allies of his estranged Vice President, Sara Duterte, outperformed expectations in a fiercely contested and pivotal Senate race. In a podcast shared on his Facebook page on Monday, Marcos said he needed friends rather than enemies as he seeks to use the remaining three years of his term to deliver on his agenda. Philippine presidents are limited to a single six-year term. 'Yes,' Marcos said when asked if he would be open to mending fences, after a bitter and very public falling-out between Marcos and the Duterte camps, which has fractured the once-powerful alliance that swept both to victory in 2022. 'As much as possible, what I am after is stability... so that we can do our jobs. That is why I am always open to things like that,' he told the podcast. Duterte's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Marcos' remarks. Sara Duterte is facing a Senate impeachment trial that could see her removed from office and permanently barred from holding public office again, denying her a presidential run in 2028. Her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, was elected mayor of Davao last week, even as he is detained at the International Criminal Court on charges of murder as a crime against humanity. Despite surveys predicting a Senate sweep by the president's allies in the May 12 midterm polls, some victories by Duterte-aligned candidates have given Sara Duterte an important foothold in the Senate that could prove pivotal in an impeachment trial. All 24 Senators will serve as jurors in the trial, with two-thirds required to vote for the impeachment for it to succeed. Marcos has distanced himself from the impeachment process, and on Monday said it was in the hands of the Senate. 'There's a process for that, let's allow the process to take its course,' he said.

Report: Trump warned MTG off of potential Senate run
By President Donald Trump has reportedly warned Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , R-Ga., off of a potential run for Senate . Trump told Greene that should she run she would likely lose during a private conversation, sources familiar with the talk told the Wall Street Journal. The president shared a poll from his longtime pollster, Tony Fabrizio, that indicated Greene would lose to incumbent Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., by double digits the sources said. Ossoff is one of the most endangered Democrats of the 2026 midterms , and a key seat Senate Republicans want to pick up to retain and possibly even expand their 53-seat majority. Trump and the White House are eager to maintain Republican control over Congress so the president can continue to push through his MAGA agenda. The report indicates that the administration is already planning for the midterms. The early polling reportedly showed Greene losing a potential race for Senate in Georgia by double-digits. The Republican congresswoman would lose by 18 points, said those familiar with the conversation Trump-Greene conversation. Greene pushed back on the report saying she never spoke to Trump about the matter. 'I have never spoken with President Trump about running for Senate or any other race,' she wrote on X. 'But for some reason, some consultants and aides are leaking to the usual tools in the media in order to promote the narrative they want to tell about me.' 'I have always supported President Trump for free and actually spent hundreds of thousands of dollars campaigning with him all across the country!!' Greene ultimately decided against running for Senate writing, 'I'm not running' in a May 9 post on X. Her decision came days after the presumed frontrunner, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, announced he would not seek the office after getting termed out of his current role. Republican Senate leadership was hoping Kemp would run as he is widely popular in the state. GOP Senators expected he could likely beat Ossoff. Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler, who briefly served as senator from Georgia after being appointed to a vacant seat, also polled as a more favorable candidate that MTG, the sources revealed. Reps. Mike Collins and Rich McCormick are also reportedly mulling a run, though they have not announced. In a statement provided to the Daily Mail, Greene slammed the 'uniparty' for teaming up against her - and shared the pollster has a 'conflict' with her. 'I decided I want nothing to do with the Senate because it's completely under uniparty control and not for the American people,' she wrote. 'To my knowledge, a lot of this was private conversation, and apparently is being leaked. The poll was done by Tony Fabrizio, who has refused to work for me because he says he has a conflict, which means he's working for someone against me.' She also wrote that past candidates, like Loeffler, lost their races despite polls indicating they were ahead. 'As far as my decisions on races in the future, I will make the decision based on where I can be most effective and what is good for me and my family,' her statement concluded, leaving the door open for other runs.
