B'gavi water poisoning rooted in hatred, bigotry: K'taka CM

Belagavi: Two weeks after drinking water laced with poison left 11 students indisposed at a government school in Belagavi district, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah Sunday described it as "a heinous act driven by religious fundamentalism and hatred" and attacked BJP for creating an environment of religious polarisation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident took place at Hulikatti village of Savadatti taluk. District superintendent of police Bhimashankar Guled told reporters that the school headmaster is from a minority community and three members of fringe group Sri Rama Sene had been arrested in connection with the case. Police sources claimed that the poisoning incident was part of a larger plan to discredit the headmaster, who has been heading the school for 13 years, and force his transfer from the district. The headmaster continues to serve the school despite continued attempts to malign him and tarnish his image. The CM, in a post on X Sunday, expressed shock and anguish over the incident, calling it "rooted in religious fundamentalism". "This act could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children. It is a terrifying reminder of how religious bigotry and communal hatred can manifest in such inhuman ways," his post said. The 11 students who fell ill after consuming the contaminated water were later discharged following treatment at a hospital in Savadatti. Of the three arrested in the case, Sagar Patil is president of Savadatti Taluk unit of Sene, police said. Reflecting on the gravity of the incident, Siddaramaiah said, "It is hard to fathom that such cruelty could arise in the land of the Sharanas, who proclaimed that compassion is the root of all religion." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Siddaramaiah criticised BJP leaders, holding them morally accountable for creating a climate of religious polarisation. "Those who spread hatred in the name of religion for political gain must introspect. Will Pramod Mutalik, BY Vijayendra, or R Ashok take responsibility for this? Leaders who support such anti-social elements must come forward and atone for their sins," he said. Siddaramaiah said the government has set up a special task force to curb hate speech and prevent communal violence."We are taking stringent legal action, but public cooperation is crucial. Citizens must raise their voice, resist hate, and file complaints against those inciting division." Commending law-enforcement authorities, Siddaramaiah added, "I congratulate the police personnel who foiled this sinister plot. I have full faith that the judiciary will deliver justice and ensure the perpetrators face the consequences of their horrific crime."

Sri Ram Sene alleges its activists beaten up for attempting to stop illegal cattle transport in Belagavi

Sri Ram Sene has alleged that five of its activists were assaulted by some persons at Ingali village near Hukkeri in Belagavi district on June 26, 2025, for trying to stop illegal cattle transport. However, police have dismissed the claim. SRS leader Vithal Gaddi told reporters in Belagavi on Sunday (June 29, 2025) that five of their activists, including Maruti Bennadi and Ajit Raniknavar were beaten up by people suspected to be cattle traders. The five youth were tied to a tree and thrashed mercilessly, he said. He alleged that the police were not taking action against the offenders. One-sided story The police, however, dismissed the claim as far from truth. 'Some TV channels and portals carried the SRS version of the story. However, it is one-sided. What happened in the village is a very unfortunate incident but a few media channels have been misguided and are reporting one side of the story,' SP Bheemashankar S. Guled said. 'The youth refused to give a written complain against their attackers. They have given letters saying that they had no complaint against anyone. But today, some SRS leaders have told reporters that they were beaten up for trying to stop illegal cattle transport. There are allegations that there was criminal trespass and an issue of women's self-respect. The cattle transport story is being used by a few to mislead and misguide,' the SP said. No complaint by victims The police registered a case against the accused after a video of the incident surfaced on social media. Mr. Guled said that the youth were assaulted by members of various communities and not just Muslims. Another police officer said that SRS activists had given two letters to the police in Yamakanamaradi police station, saying that they had no complaint against anyone. 'If there was illegal cattle transport and the youth were trying to save the cattle, why did they give this statement?' the officer said. Letters by Sene leaders The letter signed by Mr. Bennadi says that a group of youth followed a goods tractor in which Babasab Multani was ferrying six cows and calves on June 26. 'They suspected that he was illegally transporting them to a slaughter house. They chased his vehicle to the village, where they got into a fight with another group. However, they had no grudge or complaint against anyone,' the letter read. Another letter by SRS leader Shivaraj Naik says that he was in the vehicle that chased Mr. Multani's vehicle. 'We chased it till Ingali village. But when we realised that he was taking the cattle for rearing, we came back,' the letter said. 'However, villagers have alleged that the youth had trespassed into their houses and tried to harass some women. That is why they were tied to a coconut tree and beaten up,' another officer said.

Men arrested in Côte-St-Luc in October charged with possessing incendiary material

By Two men who were arrested in Côte-St-Luc last October after incendiary material was allegedly found in their vehicle have been formally charged, though one remains at large. Abdou Khadre Sene and Artemio Cabrera Pazos were scheduled to appear in a Montreal court Tuesday after they were each charged June 5 with a single count of possession of incendiary material. Quebec's prosecution service said Cabrera Pazos appeared in court and is scheduled to appear again in August. However, Sene did not appear and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The city of Côte-St-Luc said in early October an officer from its Public Security department had spotted suspicious individuals in a vehicle parked outside a synagogue around 2 a.m. and called police. At the time, Montreal police said officers stopped a suspect vehicle nearby and found incendiary material inside. The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested that night and released with a promise to appear. Police and prosecutors declined to comment Wednesday about why it took more than eight months to lay charges. Rabbi Reuben Poupko of the Beth Israel Beth Aaron — where the suspicious vehicle had been parked — said two Molotov cocktails were found outside the synagogue later that morning, during the celebration of the Jewish New Year. 'All of the violence that we've seen in Montreal and beyond, the firebombing of synagogues, the shootings at Jewish schools overnight, the recent attacks in Harrisburg (Pennsylvania); Washington D.C.; Boulder, Col., obviously, is evidence of a climate of violence against Jews and Jewish institutions and for the court to have ever granted these individuals release with a promise was absurd and a dereliction of duty,' Poupko said. Police declined to comment on whether the two men may have been linked to any incendiary devices found outside the synagogue, or whether the investigation remains ongoing, citing the fact that the case is before the court. But police spokeswoman Mélanie Bergeron said in response to a question from The Gazette that nothing suggests the men are linked to a terrorist group. The two men face a maximum sentence of two years less a day and or a fine of $5,000. A search of court records shows Sene faces a series of charges in another case, including receiving a material benefit from human trafficking, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping. Three minors arrested the same night in the neighbouring Côte-Des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-De-Grâce borough, who were also found in a vehicle with incendiary material, have also appeared in court. Prosecutors said one has pleaded guilty to possessing incendiary material and was sentenced to 12 months of probation, including a nine-month curfew, and is banned from possessing incendiary materials, explosive substances, lighters or matches. A sentencing hearing for one of the other two is scheduled to take place this month, with a sentencing hearing for other scheduled for July.

Hindu Jagruti Sene demands renaming Islamabad Colony in Kalaburagi

Members of Hindu Jagruti Sene have urged the district authorities to rename Islamabad Colony in Kalaburagi as it resembles the 'capital' of Pakistan. Sene district president Laxmikant Swadi, addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi on Sunday, said that Islamabad Colony should be named after an Indian who has made significant contribution for the nation. The Sene members also suggested a few names to be considered for renaming the colony, including the 14th Century Sufi Saint Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz, Param Vir Chakra award winner Abdul Hamid, Brigadier Mohammad Usmaan, the former President of India and aerospace scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan and Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. The Sene members will stage a protest in the city and submit a memorandum to Kalaburagi City Corporation Commissioner on Tuesday demanding renaming the colony immediately. They warned that name boards with the existing name will be smeared with black paint, if the authorities fail to rename the colony immediately.

Jagruti Sene stages protest against attacks on Hindus in West Bengal, Kashmir

The Kalaburagi district unit of the Hindu Jagruti Sene has demanded imposition of President's rule in West Bengal accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of failing to protect Hindus. The Sene members gathered at Sardar VallabhbBhai Patel Chowk and burnt tyres to express their anger towards the West Bengal government and condemned the violence targeting Hindus there. Sene district president Laxmikant Sawadi accused the West Bengal State government of appeasing Muslims and failing to protect Hindus. The agitators urged the Narendra Modi-led Central government to take over the administration and demanded stern action against the culprits. The protestors also condemned the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam and demanded strong action against Pakistan and urged Mr. Modi to act decisively against terrorists and give a befitting reply to the killing of innocents.
