Rockford IceHogs preparing for playoff action against their biggest rivals, the Chicago Wolves

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Six months of hockey covering 72 regular season games have led to this, a clean slate and a fresh start for the IceHogs in the AHL's Calder Cup playoffs. Their opening opponent Wednesday night will be their biggest rivals, the Chicago Wolves. The IceHogs' lone championship banner has been hanging at the BMO for 18 years. That was earned by the old UHL IceHogs. The quest to add another banner begins this week with a best-of-three series against the Wolves.'Obviously the excitement is really high, especially playing one of our biggest rivals,' said IceHogs forward and team captain Brett last time the IceHogs and Wolves met in a playoff series was in the second round three years ago. The Wolves swept the Hogs in three games. The Hogs haven't had much success against the Wolves this season. They were 3-9 against the Wolves in the regular season.'I think that's just the way it goes sometimes,' said Seney. 'Again, I'm a guy that I try not to think about the previous games too much, and I think that's a good mindset kind of for us. To have, and, you know, playoffs is a whole different story, and it's a different game out there than the regular season.'One thing the IceHogs have going for them is a roster loaded with players who have NHL experience with the Blackhawks this season and last season. Joey Anderson, Ethan Del Mastro, Kevin Korchinski, Nolan Allan, Artyon Levshunov and Andreas in AHL veterans Seney, Zach Sanford and former AHL MVP Gerry Mayhew and that's a bunch that seems built for the playoffs.'There's nothing you can do to prepare for playoff hockey other than experience it,' said IceHogs interim head coach Mark Eaton. 'You always hear the cliches, everything is ramped up, the intensity levels, the physicality, but until you've gone through it, you can't really appreciate how much that all of those aspects are elevated. So yeah, the guys that have been through it at the pro level, NHL especially can bring that experience.'Seney sums up the situation simply. 'It just falls on every guy to make sure come Wednesday when the puck drops, you're ready to go,'IceHogs vs. Wolves playoff series (best of 3 games)Game 1: Wednesday at Rosemont 7 2: Friday at BMO Center Rockford 7 3: (if needed) Sunday at BMO Center Rockford 4 Even though the Wolves are the higher-seeded team, two of the three games are scheduled to be playing in Rockford because Allstate Arena in Rosemont is booked with other events this weekend including a rodeo. Seney and Anderson return just in time to help the IceHogs try to secure a playoff berth

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The IceHogs magic number for earning an AHL Calder Cup playoff berth has been sitting still at five for a week now. They are getting some help to try to push them over the top and get the job done this Seney and Joey Anderson are back from knee injuries and ready to play again. They've sat out the last two to three weeks. They were on the ice for practice Tuesday morning at BMO Center and looking both expected to play Friday and Saturday in the Hogs' back-to-back home games against the Tucson IceHogs have six regular season games left. Seney says that will be more than enough time to help him get back in a rhythm.'Yeah, I honestly, I don't know if it's two or three weeks I've been out, but I'm putting in a lot of work trying to stay game ready and conditioned. It's hard to replicate on-ice conditioning off ice, but it felt good in practice today.'Seney is third on the team in points this season with 36 (9 goals, 27 assists). Anderson has 25 points (16 goals, 9 assists) in only 30 games timing of the return of Seney and Anderson couldn't be better with the IceHogs trying to hold off a hot Iowa Wild team to clinch the fifth and final playoff spot in the Central Division.'Yeah. As far as I know, Joe's trending in the right direction for this weekend too, so I know he's really excited to be back,' said Seney. 'If we had to choose (a time) for guys to be bumped and bruised, you know, I think the last two, three weeks is a lot better than two, three weeks from now.'The IceHogs could use a spark. They dropped a pair of games last weekend to the Grand Rapids Griffins when they were outscored 8-3 and IceHogs have a six-point cushion on Iowa for that final playoff spot in the Central. The Hogs' chances of overtaking Chicago or Grand Rapids for the third or fourth spots don't look good. The Hogs trail both of those teams by ten points. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Brett Seney sidelined, Aku Raty adds depth at forward for the Rockford IceHogs

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Rockford IceHogs will be without their captain as their head down the stretch of the AHL's regular season. Brett Seney is expected to miss two to three weeks of action with an MCL injury happened during the IceHogs' game Sunday in Milwaukee when Seney was involved in a collision. Seney is the IceHogs' second-leading scorer this season with 36 points (9 goals, 27 assists). He has played in 54 of their 58 games so far this interim head coach Mark Eaton admits that losing Seney is a blow, but the IceHogs are used to losing players through injuries and call-ups. 'Yeah, that's huge. You know, regardless of what point of the season you're in, when you lose your captain, you lose a guy that's, you know, been so good for you again on both sides of the puck, it's definitely going to be a big loss for us. But, you know, the show goes on.'Other IceHogs' forwards will have to step-up as the team tries to nail-down a Calder Cup Playoff berth. One of those forwards is 23-year-old Aku Raty. He was recently acquired in a trade by the Blackhawks with the Utah Hockey Club. The Blackhawks received Raty (Pronounced Rat-too), and defensemen Victor Soderstrom and Shea Weber for a 2026 5th-round draft played in 50 AHL games with the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL before the trade where he accounted for four goals and 15 assists. He scored his first goal with the IceHogs this past Sunday in expects to develop chemistry with his new teammates quickly. 'I would say I'm a smart player, so I should be able to build chemistry. That's on me, obviously, with some guys it's harder than with others, but I'VE got to watch my (video) clips, talk with the teammates and just what kind of (understand) what tendencies they have and just be ready at game time.'IceHogs' forward Gavin Hayes is impressed with Raty's work ethic.'Oh, he works hard. I mean, in practice, he's one of the hardest workers. I can take some things from him, too. Yeah, he's got a good shot. A great guy, too.'The IceHogs next game will be Wednesday night when they host the Manitoba Moose. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Putnam Board of Finance chairman enters race for mayor

Putnam — The chairman of the town's Board of Finance declared his candidacy Tuesday for the Republican nomination in the mayoral race here. David Coderre is the first prospective challenger to enter the race after Mayor Barney Seney pulled out of the Republican party in March and announced his plans to run as an unaffiliated candidate for a fifth term. 'I have great respect for Dave and his dedication to public service,' Seney, who has served as mayor since 2017, said in a statement. 'Healthy competition is a cornerstone of our democracy, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss issues that matter most to our community. My focus remains on serving the people of Putnam and continuing the work we've started. I look forward to engaging with voters and sharing my vision for the future!' Coderre, the president and owner of the military and commercial packaging company Fast Pak, LLC, has sat on the Board of Finance as chairman for the last seven years and previously served on the Board of Selectmen and the Municipal Complex Building Committee. When Seney left the party, Coderre said it left the Republicans without a candidate. 'I thought that with everything I've done before, and the town where it is right now, that it was a good time for me to throw my hat in the ring and seek the Republican nomination,' Coderre said. If elected, Coderre said he would be the first mayor 'in a long time' to bring a private sector background to the position. Coderre said he would approach issues by looking at 'how we run this in the private world, rather than just a world where we turn around and pass along any cost to the taxpayer. 'I ran my own business for 10 years and, as most small business owners will tell you, meeting payroll and making sure the lights stay on are job number one, and I think we forget that when we get into a government sector,' Coderre said. 'I'm the kind of person who would come in with enough experience on how things do run, but an outside perspective to say how can we do it even better, how can we make it a little more efficient and make it a better operating machine for the town.' As mayor, Coderre said he would like to see the town 'build on the progress we've made and continue to grow as a community.' 'I grew up here … my family's here, all my roots are here and it's a town that I love,' Coderre said. 'The town is in a great place, it's made great strides and I think we're just at a point now where we need that next vision.' As Coderre heads into the race, he said he is focused on addressing the impact of rising property values on taxpayers, in addition to economic development, beautification, the school budget, aging infrastructure, and facility upgrades for Putnam EMS and the town's police and fire stations. When it comes to the aging emergency services facilities, Coderre said 'We can't ignore the 800-pound gorilla in the room.' 'I think that sometimes this administration has tried to address things a little bit more of a short-term rather than a long-term solution,' Coderre said. 'We need to do something long term and eventually that's gonna cost some money, but we can't just turn a blind eye to it. … The first step would be putting an exploratory committee together to bring professionals in and see what kind of advice we could get on some of the options that are available to us.' In 2018, Coderre ran for state senate in the 29th District and lost against Democratic Sen. Mae Flexer. During that race, the Hartford Courant reported that Coderre had been arrested three times in 2011 and once in Rhode Island in 2017 for domestic-related incidents. At the time, the Courant said the arrests, which included charges of disorderly conduct, violating a restraining order and willful trespass, had all been dismissed by a judge or erased upon Coderre's completion of a court-mandated family violence program. According to a document from the North Kingstown, R.I., Police Department, Coderre was arrested there in May of 2017 on the charge of willful trespass at the property of his ex-wife. In a brief narrative police wrote that a male caller reported that 'he was assaulted at Wilson park,' and that Coderre 'followed him to his home.' When asked about the arrests, Coderre described the situation as 'water under the bridge.' 'The people of Putnam have elected me multiple times since then. People that know me know who I am,' Coderre said. 'No divorces are fun. … It was an issue, it shouldn't have been an issue, it was made up by a very nasty political opponent.' Coderre said that he does not anticipate that his history will be an issue this election, adding that 'it has not come up again.'
